kerimcan ak no it’s not. racism, for lack of better explanation/words, is when you think your race is superior. so saying another race is racist has little to do with your own races’ superiority.

For those blasting that guy for just straight up saying the N word - the average Korean won’t have the concept of the wording “the N word” because that’ term (eg the F word, the C word, etc.) is purely English. There’s no alternative. Yes, he is aware that it’s a bad word, but his understanding or connection to it is not the same as those who come from English speaking or non-Asian cultures. Most know now that the N word is really bad, but that’s only if they’re quite up with current/American culture, which you can’t expect EVERYONE in a non-American/Western country to be. So stop blasting him. He was just trying to explain the best way he knew how in a VERY different context to America in a homogeneous culture.

In fact, There was one time a blog/video of a asian person reading racist things toward asian Americans. The asian person didn't deem it as racist. Meanwhile, the American next to her was calling out that it was racist. Its not that asian ppl can choose.. its the fact they literally don't know.. Asians should not be held at the same standard in knowledge as asian Americans.

The guy even slightly bow to apologize while the other put his hand on his chest and you could tell how they felt really bad .What a wonderful kind of people .

껌둥이(ggamdoongee) on its own is actually not a bad word. ~둥이 is something that has a characteristics of cuteness. For example if you said 껌둥이 puppy, its just means a cute black puppy. But if you say that to a person, now it becomes a racial slur.

Hi ! Everyone ! First of all, I would like to thank Jay for giving me the chance to do something like this. As a black person learning Korean, there have been numerous times where I have felt discouraged by certain words they use towards ‘us’. The amount of times I’ve heard people telling me, why would you learn their language, they don’t even like you. However, I figured it would be more meaningful to get past this and seek to educate people for the better. Finally, I got the chance to do so thanks to Jay. I hope you enjoy the video and don't think we were just trying to make people uncomfy for our own pleasure. It is an ongoing issue and in my way I tried to contribute to make a little change :) Edit (10/06/2020) I came back to read comments, cuz wow it's already been a year since we did this video. I read so many nice comments and some not so nice comments, but it was really interesting to see the reaction of people. Eventually, I will be reflecting on this video on my channel, within this month. I'll be answering questions people had about this video and several comments people left that need to be addressed. So, please be on the lookout and thank you again for watching the video. I'm still hesitating about either doing a live stream or just filming a video. 🦋

I almost cried because I’m black myself and they kept asking `who said that?’ It touched me and when she said the n word in Korean the boy was shocked at what she was asking and the fact that the girl cried really got me, I always tell my mum not all Koreans are mean, I respect how they helped to explain the words 😢

I see some people calling out the korean guy who said nigger. Yeah obviously it isn't okay but I think in this context it isn't horrible because she did ask for a meaning and I'm sure he was just trying to be honest by saying the word which would give her the meaning at best. It worked since we all understood what he was trying to say 🤷🏾‍♀️ The fact that afterwards he explained it was bad etc means he had no harmful intentions, he knows the weight of those words :) Also this video was quite interesting. Thanks, I just learned a new concept! Never know that is called “benevolent racism” but I am aware of this type of stereotype. For Asian people will think about things like “good at math” “get A+” or “eat rice” - these are not negative (ok maybe “good at studying” has a hidden meaning of this person is not good at socializing and less attractive)

I agree, but most Koreans find this concept alien. We take positive stereotype as compliment(Koreans are good at math), or if a stereotype is something shared by Koreans too we find it non-offensive(i.e Koreans are workaholics). Not saying this is right, but when a Korean blurts out an uncomfortable statement based on stereotype, it's more out of ignorance than to offend.

Most East Asians can't speak English that well as their own mother tongue is mostly used used higher education and everything like that, unlike South East and South Asian countries where English is literally NEEDED.

Except we use Nuna for everyone,not just black people. Nuna is not the same as sis, because it is an honorific, aka a form of respect. It’s been used since ancient times in Korea. In fact, it is seen as very disrespectful if you don’t call a girl who is older than you Nuna or Eonnie. The term “Black Nuna” however can be seen as disrespect, just like she explained in the video. I have never used it, and always correct my other Korean mates when they use it. The word Nuna, however has nothing to do with cultural appropriation and has a total different meaning and use than sistah.

외국인이라는 말도 우리 나라 사람들 너무 남용하는 경향이 있어요. 다른 나라에서는 외국인이라는 단어가 긍정적인 의미를 갖고 있지 않은데 한국 사람들은 외국인 외국인 너무 많이 써서 그 말이 나쁜 어감을 가진다는 것을 잊어가는거 같아요. 일상 대화에서 그 말을 좀 그만 썼으면 좋겠어요.

@@user-go7qf7zf5i ....님은 외국 가서 누가 외국인이라고 부르면 기분 좋겠어요 안 좋겠어요? 애기들이 길 건너는 백인들 보고 "외국인이다"라고 하는거 괜찮다고 생각해요? 그냥 사람이지 나와 다르게 생긴 사람. 외국인이라고 하는건 나와의 다름을 중심으로 말하는거고 그 사람들 한국 사람이 아님을 강조하는 것이며 결국 나와 그 사람 사의 벽을 쌓는 거예요. 영어로도 foreigner라는 말 절대 좋은 어감을 가진 단어 아닙니다. 공식 문서나 법적 맥락이 아닌 이상 그 사람이 어떤 나라에 속하지 않는다는 것, 즉 나와 어울리지 않는다는 것을 부각하는 말입니다. 외국인이라는 단어도 어감 자체만으로 한국인처럼 안 생긴 사람을 소외시키는 단어이고 일상 생활에서 사용하지 말도록 하는 게 맞다고 봐요. 가서 한국어 할 줄 아는 아무 유학생에게 물어보면 동감할거 분명해요.

As a Asian myself, I was taught that black skin are for poor people or bad people. They said it’s look ugly. Almost every Asian people want to change their skin tones. So, People will say to them like “ You skin look so white and pretty, You must be rich...etc”. I’ve had enough experience bc I have brown skin. My friends or even some of my family always wanted me use whitening products. I sometimes got called “ n-word” in my country language. I think racism in Asian are still high.

On old times in Western countries it was the same, rich people had clearer skin because they stay inside, while poor people worked in the field so they had darker skin tones. Nowadays is more common for average people to have clear skin tones as people work inside factories or buildings and reach people go to the beach to tan, so concept has been reversed.

@@GUTS2000s That's some kind of insight thinking. As Chinese, I'd say in East Asia, discrimination against balck people are not high. Basicly people historically prefer lighter skin color bcz tanned means outside working and lower social class. At least Chinese people in general have a basicly POSITIVE view of black people for Hollywood movies and NBA. So a well mannered African American person probably feels very good when being in China if he is not poor. But being poor in develping countries is no good. In China people only care about two things: Family and money. So real African people may get more obvious discrimation against for being African (being poor). And another thing is American street culture, lets say Outgoing, in East Asia this kind of behavior would look being a ponk or a dangrous person, people will react to be stay away from such people. But in general Americans won't really learn Asian reginal cultures and being respectful, so it's like a common thing. And I once met a real African guy, he was a christan and was really well behavior and looked gentleman, he probably had a nice time when in China. This works also for Japan and South Korea. And Japanese are more shy and quite.

I'm Asian, too. Almost all of them want to change their skin? You and the people around you may, but me and the people around me don't. I've never complained about my skin color.

Sometimes i used before When i was young. my meaning also for respect. in korea, if someone something do well, call like big brother or big sister.(just kidding)so me also call to black big brother.but that 'black'word is wrong. now i know. So i never use any more. please don't upset! and so sorry about that.. Many korean people think black people better athletic ability than others. thats why korean people made that word. that meaning is not negative..but i think we must not use! if i heard "yellow big brother!" Like this. me also feel not good..every skin person are same person. not diffrent!!

This is the best thing ever. Its inspired me. That group of people that felt so bad, trying to see who said it made my heart melt. I wanted to cry. Thank you for this amazing social experiment! 😭💜 I absolutely hate when people criticize race. The best thing is that the Koreans stuck up for it and didn't try hurting her feelings. The thing is that.. we're ALL human. We are equal no matter the skin color, the amount of money we have, the amount of things we own. We're what matters. What makes us different from each other is personality. So, if you wanna judge and be racist then so be it. Nobody is gonna stop someone from doing something but we will not encourage it. We shouldn't encourage it because in my opinion it isn't right. We neglect what we have in life. We should be happy that we even exist because love for one another is the biggest thing that life has for us. 😊🤷‍♀️💜

I seriously do not understand anyone who goes out of their way to be racist to someone. Like I cant imagine how humiliated, scared, and hurtful it could be to have someone come up to you and call you a slur or make a racist comment to you.
