I sure love it.

I use MDF to make arcades. The best way to protect any of the exposed edges is to mix 5 parts water with 1 part glue. Put it in the cuts with a foam brush. When it's dry, quick sand with 220g and it's a hard edge. Nice bench!

Please stay away from MDF. It's too soft and will soak water if not protected. Go with traditional birch plywood. The cost is a little higher, but you'll have a piece of furniture that will stand the test of time. You can also accent the bench using an exotic wood for the base. This project is so awesome along with the results.

Built to size of cushion... so no plans likely.

Where did they get the baskets for the storage bench?

The thing about MDF is that no amount of screws and glue will keep it together without that back plate. MDF has no real strength against lateral movement.

I despise MDF.

I hope you painted the underside of that bench, it is the place that is always missed and it also is the worst place to get water on as it will be sitting on the floor and any water will come in contact with it.

Not a new episode but one of my favorite! Awesome bench I'm going to try and build myself! Can someone please tell me and others though, why are flat head screws still a thing? They are the absolute worst!

Are you confusing the terms "flat head" with "slotted"? Flat head screws are just that. A screw with a flat head. Slotted would refer to the type of driver you have to use. Some of those are slotted, Phillips square (Robertson) and torx. You can get a flat head screw with any of the driver types. If you look closely at the video, they are using a deck screw that has a flat head and a torx driver (kind of a star shape).

I watch this and have to ask, yes I know it's an old video. What about calcium deposits or hard water deposits, rust, and or lime in that balancing valve? I don't know where you are, but here we change our showerheads and clean out our flush valve every few years. Personally, I think this is a situation waiting to happen, they will never last 40 years in my opinion. A situation like those hose bib anti-siphon, a call back waiting to happen. I can't tell you how many of those I have thrown in the trash. Anyway, Love the show, great information. If I sound like I am complaining, sorry, I am not. I am just a grumpy old man and don't know how to word it better. :)

I was concerrned when the painter said that mdf is a very soft material, (something I already knew), but what is the guideline about where it is ok and not ok to use this material? Can This Old House give us the schooling, the guidelines in general, so that we can know enough to decide when mdf is ok or not ok?

What is the purpose of the glue actually because finaly you will using screw/nail?

@Knappmiller the screws only hold where they are place the glue will along the entirety of the dado. Also, MDF does not hold screws as well as solid wood or plywood. It tends to ream out easily with any movement. The glue greatly reduce any chance of movement within the joint. If possible you should glue and mechanically fasten all joints.

what glue do you recommend? I noticed you are using gorilla glue.

I think that valve cartridge is newer than fifty years.

50 years ago isn't 1950 anymore oldtimer. 70 builds are 50 years old. The cheapest and ugliest builds of history have made it half a decade.

I refuse to use MDF as it gives off chemical vapours. However, at the start of the show, when the bloke arrived up the stairs, I swear it looked like the setting of 'Home Improvement' for a moment LOL, Cheers :-)

Shower cartridge puller and that tool can remove that cartridge without using the pliers. That make another kind that can pull the outer case if the two parts come apart

They're deck screws with a coating for use in pressure treated lumber and wet applications. Prob what they had laying around because if water penetrates, mdf is going to swell and fail long before any type of screw.

Why not just use the tool, made to remove the cartridge, that he just had in his hand. Seems strange.

That MDF is $60 a board now, not $30 as mentioned at the beginning.

My parents house has the newer 3 way valve in the house but if the sink is on in the kitchen the water gets cold and if anything in the bathroom is on like the sink and the toilet it gets hot

Funny how people buy these remodel homes and know or learn nothing about them the customer with plumbing problems has a nice home with old piping ..people need to really start knowledging themselves even after they purchase a home..

99% agree. MDF has very few applications in my work. Although, If you want perfectly flat (assembly table top) its hard to beat. But, you must protect all exposed sides as it chips terribly.

He clearly says counter clockwise - he was just turning and grunting while he said it. Counter was softer, but he 100% said it - listen again.

Track saw with dust collection, don't need a mask.

Replacing a 50 year old all metal cartridge (that still worked) with a modern plastic part makes me cringe. That part will wear out in half the time.

It didn’t “work”, it failed to accommodate for water pressure changes and froze her in the shower. 🧐 If in 25 years she has to call a plumber back in to put in a new one, that seems a fair trade off.

What's up with Kevin using a particulate mask while sanding mdf and Tom not? We know that not using one is harmful to your health. We also know old timers don't want to use them. Some of them have died from that already. I want This Old House to highlight best practices. Save lives. What about it? The message here is that it's ok not to use a particulate mask. Knowing the medical science, then, the message is we don't care whether you live or die. Too dramatic? I don't think so. People have died. Shower woman is adorbs Again with the painter, K3vin is using a particulate mask but the painter is not. Even if he sadly does not normally use one, is that what you want to advise us to do? Help us. When do we need it. We rely on This Old House for safety information _at the very least._ If it is important to health, why isn't the painter using a particulate mask? 22:19 -- look at that! Those nail holes are not filled in with putty. That isn't a normal TOH lesson. Are you guys slipping? The answer is yes, but don't. Stop. We want best practices from you guys, not something sloppy. We can do sloppy on our own. I guess in general I'm calling on you guys to step up and do your best as you have before. Maybe you're tired and not being careful anymore? Whatever it is I call for you to be as good as you have been in the past. Please. I remember years ago Tommy talking about best safety practices on PBS. I think I knew then that Norm and Tommy and his crew, sadly, didn't always follow best safety practices, but was proud of him and happy that he always presented them as they were understood then. It seems that y'all have backslid a little.

@@PatrickPoet masks in general. Since I’ve been back to work in late May, I’ve maybe seen two other trades wear a mask. I work in residential construction on Long Island.

@@KitchenerLeslie2 that's disturbing. A lot of particulates cause serious long term harm. MDF in particular is (usually except in CA where they require non-toxic binder) harmful enough that you need a tight fitting mask with HEPA filters. If you work in a field you have to educate yourself about the health hazards so you know when and why to use particular PPE. I grew up in Texas where people often thought it unmanly to take care of yourself. In the trades the life expectancy is noticeably short for manly men. I don't think it manly to die early for no reason.
