Ask, Seek, Knock | The Teaching Series | EP127

In this episode, “Ask, Seek, Knock,” Bible teacher Brad Gray takes us into the heart of one of Jesus’s most misunderstood sayings: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.” How in the world are we to make sense of that? Does it sound too good to be true? Do your experiences with prayer seem consistent with these words?
God is many things, but a genie in a bottle isn’t one of them. And when you put Jesus’s words in their proper context, they start to make more sense. Jesus offers these words in the context of his Sermon on the Mount, which means they’re part of a larger point Jesus is making. In essence, the Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’s way of showing us how to live with the kind of heart that desires the sorts of things God desires.
So, when Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock, he’s not giving us a blank check to pursue our latest whims. Instead, he’s inviting us to ask so we recognize that all good gifts come from Him. But prayer isn’t just making requests. It’s also about listening for the voice of God to help us discern what we truly need, and then practicing consistent, radical dependence on the Father whose extravagant, generous love is just waiting to meet us in our place of need. By the end of this episode, Ask, Seek, Knock, you’ll have a totally new framework for understanding how prayer shapes us into the kind of people who learn to love the things God loves.

May I just say that your teaching comes so aptly when I need it. Last year I came across your teaching series about the parable of the Lost Son in Luke 15. That changed my life. You have no idea how you have encouraged me in my walk with Jesus. From the bottom of my heart I am grateful to have found your channel through your Dad posting a link in his LinkedIn account. God has annointed your teaching series to reach hearts like mine. I truly need to revisit the Sermon on the Mount cause I want to improve my prayer life. I need to be more intentional. You have a GIFT to bless people with the Gospel. God bless you and your family!

Thank you, Iverson! All of our teachings have an eastern thinking approach as this is one of our components of teaching the cultural context of the Bible. Some videos highlight this explicitly; other videos are more implicit. Here's one of our teachings where we discuss honor and shame: Episode 099 - Parable of the Lost Son Pt 6: Shame on the Cross kzread.info/dash/bejne/q212j9CsnMStg9Y.html. Thanks!
