Ask A Cardiology Nurse Practitioner

As a nurse practitioner in primary care, there are SO many things I’ve wanted to ask a cardiology nurse practitioner. This week, I had the lovely pleasure of interviewing Scott Pasquale, FNP and cardiology nurse practitioner, with questions from the RWNP community.
In this episode, we covered:
✅ What cardiologists wish primary care providers knew
✅ A breakdown of common cardiovascular tests, how to explain them to patients, and how to choose between each one!
✅ Review of how to order holter monitors the right way!
✅ Common cardiovascular topics like atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation, and heart failure
✅ Resources for nurse practitioners interested into going into cardiovascular medicine

Caution to primary care to avoid stress testing if patient has AS T2HB or HOCM. Any murmur? Avoid ordering a stress before being seen by cardio. Also, make note of any aortic aneurysm prior to testing. A baseline echo is such a nice diagnostic tool before seeing cards. 😄

Thank you for making this awesome video. If FNP wants to work in a specialty such as oncology or cardiology, should they sit for the oncology NP or cardiology NP exam?

Many NP's I know will work in the area of interest with their initial certification to see if they really enjoy it. If so they will then go on to get additional certifications.

Lots of factors come into play. Many states will allow you to work independently as a Cardiac NP but also you have to consider if you work inpatient or outpatient.
