Asics Gel-Nimbus 25 Vs Hoka Clifton 9 | Which cushioned shoe should you pick up for daily training?

The Asics Gel-Nimbus and Hoka Clifton 9 are not necessarily shoes you might put in the same category, but both are options you might look at if your focus is comfort over daily training miles.
The Gel-Nimbus 25 sees some big changes from the previous version. As well as noticeably revamped aesthetics, the shoe now firmly sits in the max-cushioned category of running shoes. The new FF BLAST PLUS ECO cushioning, combined with Asics’ PureGel technology, aims to give a softer, more comfortable experience for easy and longer runs.
The Clifton 9 sees some modifications to its predecessor, specifically to make it lighter and to offer a higher level of cushioning. It’s a shoe designed for comfort over daily runs featuring a softer compression moulded EVA foam midsole, a breathable engineered knit upper and gusseted tongue.
Tom has tested the two shoes out to see how they compare for easy runs and comfortable daily efforts.

I'm not a runner but am active and out walking all the time. I've gotten about 10 different sneakers recently and today got the Asics 25..For me..these are the most comfortable and by a wide margin. I'm very impressed with the quality and I feel they can be compared to a luxury German car brand..The Clifton 9's...maybe Volvo at best..boring but safe and decent. Just my .02 cents of course.

Really like the uppers on the Nimbus and the FFBlast+ in the forefoot is really cushioned where I need it. Really have enjoyed running in them. Nimbus feels much more plush than the Clifton.

For myself that dose longg slow runs the nimbus is Leagues above the Clifton! They make me want to just keep on going for hours! But the Clifton certainly have there place; easy to wear, can handle some light trails, great durability second only to brooks but with more saz than the dead feel of the glycerine foam.

The Nimbus 25 are my fave running sneakers to date. They are soooo comfortable. I love the extra cushion as I’m an avid runner. I ordered the Clifton 9’s but they never came :/ The overall consensus seems to be the nimbus 25s over the clifton 9s. The irony is the 9s actually costs more. You’d think it’d be the other way around. ASICS you have a winner! 🏆

I have Puma DN2 and love it. My longest run is 6miles so far but at 5 i felt a little like i wished there was an extra 2mm in forefoot (heavy runner). I'm hoping the N25 has a similar feel for underfoot comfort on longer runs. PDN2 works well with my foot, cushion, bounce, rebound, stability all have been the best so far out of what i have tried but i might need a bit more for long runs. So Asics N25 or NB SCT2?

I returned the clifton 9 for the nimbus 25. I liked the clifton upper design, and the new midsole. I just didn't get along with the 5mm drop. They need to give it a 8mm with that new foam density as i felt like the heel compressed to much. The nimbus upper is really hard to beat, and the midsole is capable of just about any type of run. I actually prefer it to the novablast 3 for daily miles.

Thanks for the comparisons even with 1080v12 cos I hated that shoe too wide toe box, inadequate forefoot cushion and outsole wore down too soon. I'm loving my N25 perfect shoe for comfort and mileage (always been Asics fan anyway) but always wondered about Hoka. Was not a big fan of C8 nor SG5

Ooh I caved and bought the C9! Sold a couple of used shoes and found a new pair at a very good deal at 42% discount! I still love to run in N25 as the gel does absorb a lot of shock and protects my ankles from past injuries. There is a stark difference in comfort with the C9 and I can't seem to run with ease as far as the N25 can take me. I've replaced the C9 insoles with "Nafoing" full gel ones, the orange and blue model, a China brand and my favorite insoles. Now the C9 got more rebound and softer landings, but I still prefer longer runs in N25 there's nothing out there quite like it.

There is a problem with hoka foams. They dry out and deform pretty fast. Also very inconsistent from batch to batch. I had three clifton 7s. All very diffrent in underfoot experience. Other brands are not using pure eva. Some mix in olefin like ffblast plus. Some mix in tpu etc. This prolongs life and durability of the foams by alot. Hands down nimbus for this one. Its also very comfortable for walking.

I'm a heavier runner. I currently have a pair of Nimbus 24 and Speed 3's. The Speed 3's aren't doing as well for me. I'm not a fast runner. My faster training paces are around 8 minute miles while my long runs are around 9 to 9:30. I have an issue with the speed 3's where I can feel something in the shoe, dead-center next to the ball of my right foot and only my right off and its just.. annoying. I had it in the Speed 2's as well. If I'm doing intervals, the speeds are enjoyable, but they're not holding up in my longer runs. I might grab another pair of nimbus or perhaps the clifton 9.

And then on days when I want to skip along a bit faster (for me that’s around the 4:40/km) I use my Triumph 19s which have fantastic pop and energy return. I have the 1080v12 and I feel it doesn't handle distances above 10km well, the forefoot foam seems to decompress less, hurting my metatarsals. The outsole also wears down fast, at 50km I'm seeing as much wear as my Nimbus 24 at 350km. I don't recommend the v12 if you're looking to hold onto your shoes for as long as possible. I'm actually here looking for a replacement of v12.

@@stenblann9784 I have had the Skechers and loved the plush cushioning stack in the Max Cushioning series. The sparse rubber and exposed foam combo somehow were sticky and grippy even in the rain, my sister wore hers in the snow with no slippage. However, they wore down way too soon, at 50km they were around 70% flat so I'd think 100km is pushing it. I sell my shoes when they have around 25% life left usually healthcare workers buy them, or they'd have no resale value. Skechers are cheap but aren't worth it for the mileage. If foam is wearing down, it affects the entire geometry of the shoe. If insole wears down, you can replace it. I have narrow feet, female, and therefore Asics regular widths fit great. I've not tried all of Nike nor all of Adidas yet, but most of their distance runners and cross trainers don't fit me. Nike soles were particularly slippy on wet surfaces so that's out. Novablast 1,2 were too cushy and unstable - I think they suit true neutral strides, while I tend to supinate. Novablast 3 was slightly better but not as plush in the forefoot. The Nimbus 25 felt very good but I've heard mixed reviews on the outsole - I really need a reliable sticky one for it rains often here I could run in crocs if they made a good running shoe, so I'm curious about the Clifton 9. The 8 lasted just a little longer than my Skechers but the midsole wore down sooner. I replaced the insole with a gel patched one and wore it for another 80km before the outsole rubber flattened and wore the foam down. I didn't sell this pair but trashed it. The Clifton 9 has better outsole design and looks like it would last longer.
