Asianet News Exclusive: Inside the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya | Asianet Newsable
All eyes are on December 2023. That's when devotees of Lord Ram will be able to offer prayers to their beloved deity at the grand new temple in Ayodhya.
A symbol of exquisite craftsmanship and extreme engineering, the grand Ram Temple in Ayodhya will host millions of devotees from across the country when its doors would open.
It will take another year, perhaps the end of 2024, for craftsmen will continue to chisel the Bansi Pahad stone brought from Rajasthan and give the finishing touches to Lord Ram's abode.
The construction of the 54,700 square feet temple over 2.7 acres is going on in full swing. The man overseeing the work on the site is Nripendra Misra, a career bureaucrat who is literally leaving no stone unturned to ensure the glory of Lord Ram and Ayodhya is restored to its pristine form.
Asianet News' Rajesh Kalra travelled nearly 700 kilometres to meet the former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and get a sense of the enormity of the challenge before Misra.
Misra, who was elected as the chairman of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust's temple construction committee in February 2020, highlighted several interesting aspects related to the temple.
On the site, there is hectic activity. Construction workers drilling, massive cranes lifting granite stones, concrete mixing trucks... the intensity of the work on-site is undeterred by the harsh April sun.
During the extensive interview, Misra spoke at length about the challenges posed by the weather thus far, and how the entire base of the temple is iron-free and made of compacted engineered soil.
"Our best attempt is that by December 2023, we may be able to complete the ground floor of the 'Garbha Griha' (sanctum sanctorum). There are five mandaps which go up to the east of the temple. Those five mandaps will be on the ground floor. Then the first floor will be built with three mandaps and finally, the second floor will have two mandaps. That's how the main temple will constructed," Misra said.
"You can imagine the amount of work left. I can predict that by end of 2024 all the floors may be completed. The inner carvings and iconography would still continue to be done," he added.
But the challenge for Misra does not end with building the temple. There is a 67-acre temple complex that too would need to be developed near simultaneously.
"There is a 67-acre area around the temple which is called the temple complex. There we have other ideas that we are going to do. For example, we will have temples dedicated to Valmiki, Nishad and Sabari Mata. The idea is that we must have temples which will make all communities, people of all faith, believe that this (Lord Ram) is our 'Bhagwan' and that he has not been hijacked by any particular community," he said.
Among the interesting details that emerged during the interview included one about a plan to offer a celestial treat to all devotees visiting Ayodhya.
Misra said, "Lord Ram was born on Ram Navami. The belief is that he was born around noon. So what we are trying to do is that at noon, we are trying to direct the rays of the sun for five to 10 minutes through a technical process to reflect on the forehead of Lord Ram."
There are also other nuances that have been incorporated.
"The entrance on the east, the 'dwar' will be Gopuram style, which represents the temples of the south. We wanted to capture that as among the features," Misra said.
'Each material which is being used, each design and drawing that is being used, that is being done in IIT Chennai -- they are the initiators. That is tested by L&T and TCE (Tata Consulting Engineers). They tested. And finally, we have given the stability test for this agenda of 1000 years to the Central Research Building Institute. The CRBI has tested the entire load that will come onto the structure through simulations. In short, we are dependent on the best brains of this country. There is just one objective: how to make this temple durable for 1000 years and unique."

Being a local in ayodhya I can assure everyone...the work is going on at a great pace......even our homes of 2or 3 storeys takes almost a year to get complete....it's a huge area It will take around 3 years to get completed but politicians make in appropriate comments just to get some anti hindu appreciation

It's kind of scary to think that 1000 years ago there were no such engineers, stability testing and CAD simulation, but those temples still stand properly

It would be unwise to assume that because such structures which have stood for millennia obviously needed great engineering to complete. In those days they wud've had their own methods to accomplish their goals.

I don't wanna demean the engineers we have today but engineering and technology of our civilization thousands of years ago was so advanced that we're still awestruck by their acheivements. Maybe we're not fully qualified to understand their techniques

Iron has been used in Hindu temples for atleast 1500 yrs, we have in currently extant temples. Ashok Lat in North India or the iron pillars in Karnataka temples are 1500-2000 yrs old. Reason for not using iron is- its ductility, its propensity to expand in heat of 50°c , and its rusting property.

For one, 'loha' and steel aren't the same. STEEL wasn't invented in ancient times. Iron (loha) on the other has been around for thousands of years. There's an entire age called iron age which started in India in at least 1200 BC. And two, the reason why you don't use steel, in the form of steel beams, or worse reinforced concrete, is because steel rusts and deteriorates. And when used in concrete as reinforced concrete, the rusting steel will become brittle, crumble and weaken the pillars, beams and walls, create cracks and finally make the whole building collapse. And all of this will happen within a century. All the reinforced concrete buildings you see around you, won't last for more than a few decades. Meanwhile, even plain brick buildings are strong and stable enough to survive for centuries, if not millennia. For instance the brick houses and buildings in Europe from medieval era. Stone structures on the other hand will last for even longer, like all those ancient Greek, Egyptian and Roman monuments that are well over 2000 years old. Even if they are made from some of the softer stones like limestone, sandstone and marble, instead of granite and basalt.

Steel is not the same as Iron. First one is an alloy, while the later is elemental form with process and source impurities. I don't think India or any country for that matter produces native iron anymore. This is because every furnace since Bessemer uses a mix of Scrap Steel along with Pig Iron to improve furnace efficiency. Temple construction in India was devoid of iron and steel due to its inherent corrosion and subsequent expansion leading to catastrophic failure.

Coming from Ayodhya, believe me when I say this, I have seen how my Prabhu stayed in a prison like tent and how us bhaktas would line up like prisoners in a single file just to get a distant glimpse of our Prabhu. Correction: Iron has been archaeologically discovered in 2100BCE in today's Chota Nagpur region. The oldest evidence of Iron anywhere in the world. Yes, it was not used for ancient constructions. They used hard materials that would last for millenias. And they were absolutely correct. As much as this construction is impressive, it is probably nowhere near the magnificence of original Ram Mandir.

Sorry but you're wrong! The old iron found in India was from 1900-2000BCE but now recently they found from Tamil Nadu dated 2172 BCE. Now not the oldest from Nagpur it's from Tamilnadu

@@dineshkumarswtnuidwreg1993 interesting, one of the oldest languages/Dravidian origin I believe and still spoken by around 80 million. I’m still wondering if they found substantial proof that it’s older than Sanskrit. I believe there is a possibility because the first migrations into india happened way before the people who spoke Sanskrit. Also, if iron was found there what does that entail if they didn’t build huge structures with it yet? Just that they were using iron tools and weapons….(Iron Age) I think Egypt civilizations were doing that another 1000 to 3000 years earlier….but there is some evidence that ancient Indian exchanged knowledge, goods, and perhaps architecture around that area like Lebanon.

I think this will be more magnificent that the orignal. People romanticise that older architecture was better than today's. No. Modern tech is far superior.

They should make a compound in ayodhya where white walls and white ceilings should be made around an idol of shree ram and maa sita,those walls should be painted each year by artists from all over the country with entries and a grand prize of 50 lakh rupees,A team of 11 should be allowed to participate in a competition and the winner each year should paint it in one months time,the paintings should be based on shree rams life events depicting his journey on earth,if each year this competition occurs a host of painters and artists shall get employment,the temple trust should organise the competition and pay the winners and second place participants,all 50 participanting teams should get 5 lakhs each,so that all budding talent can prosper.Same thing can be carried out through poems and shlokas in sanskrit competition which should be organised after the painting competition is completed and the winner is chosen,the shlokas and poems should depict the painters vision,with the winner of the poem and shlokas competition getting their work written on the walls each year by the same painters.Use temple money to propogate art and poetry which we saw in our old monuments.Start with ram temple and let it happen in all jyotilingas and dhaams,vaishnodevi and if possible in amarnath if we manage to capture it back from china.

Life of stones are much more than any form of Iron . There are many !!! Harshest condition is for Kedarnath ( changing weather, wind speed, shifting ground ( high velocity river beds on both sides) and very high seismic unstable Himalayan area . And still surviving. My concern is Islamic invasion… Bamiyan Buddha was very strong.

@@yashvardhanojha6796 go and stop Stalin in Tamilnadu , he is doing today . 125 yrs old Temple demolished recently, few days back stoped old age traditions of temple ( tradition makes identity, if no unique traditions than there’s no religion). There are big Mayan temples in Central America but there no one to use that . इसलिए ख़ाली मंदिर रहने से नहीं होगा , उसमें पूजा करने वाला भी होना चाहिए । एक समय का देश का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण शक्तिपीठ शारदा पीठ के खंड हर को लोग शैतान का घर बोलता है । अभी ! आगे की बात तो छोड़ दें ।
