Of somebody does that today - securities have to take that as a threat to commit a crime. Which means: Alarm, control of every atom of you and your luggage, a hefty fine and the bill for the evacuation of this part of the airport. O, and of course a life-long ban from all airlines. - Never be funny with securities or customs nowadays.

Exactly why I always try to show up early because I usually get pulled aside, even though I try to have everything in the store bought containers. My bad set off an alert/alarm or something when it went thru the scanner and they pulled me aside to check it.. it was a new, unopened package of disinfectant wipes! They said it went off because of a chemical, so they had to wait for a supervisor to come over, do a swab test and check the swab in a little container like they do to check for for shmugs.
I've heard of this mix-up happening at the Olympics with someone's hard-of-hearing grandmother who called sunscreen her “balm.” Apparently it's not just limited to second-language English speakers.
