ASIAN EARWAX IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT!?!!
Where we find out that our ear wax is fundamentally different from Asian ear wax, and we get jolly weirded out.

Hey guys! Thought I would mention this just in case you are interested... The wet/dry earwax thing is caused by a variation in a gene called ABCC11. Most Europeans have the variation that causes more fat to be transported to the earwax, giving it a more waxy substance, while most East Asians have a variation that leads to the lack of fat transportation to the earwax. This same variation is related to body odor, and accounts for the fact that most East Asians don't have body odor while most Europeans do. Just thought I would share! I remember reading about it on my dad's DNA test profile :)

Grace G. whoaa is there another variation besides the two? My earwax on the very outer part of my ear is waxy, but when I use a cottonbud to clean deeper into the ear, it’s all dry - when I move the cottonbud around I can hear like a sound like a sand scratching a wooden surface? XD Is that more caucasian-like or east asian-like? XD
Seriously though, Ollie's metaphor game is getting better everyday. I think he should do some stand up comedy type stuff.

It's not Asian people. It's specifically a gene that is excessively common in Korea, and by excessively common near 100%. However in China it's still a lot but much less as is true for Japan. Pretty much all SEA countries like Thailand, Phillipines etc. have the same variation that most European and almost 100% of African-Americans have. Which is the same gene that dictates whether you sweat from mostly your skin or mostly your hair follicles. If you sweat through your hair follicles it secretes a protein, which causes bacteria to harbor and creates BO. Which is why deodorant is so hard to find in Korea. Because people don't have the gene that would imply needing it.

@robin5109

@kolkat c If you're going to boast about genes online, at least do it properly. EDAR stands for Ectodysplasin A receptor and EVERYONE carries the gene for EDAR. It's a part of a signalling pathway which controls the formation of ectodermal tissue, such as the skin, hair follicles and sweat glands. It's just that there is a common polymorphism present in the East Asian population which may be associated with thicker hair and more sweat glands. Yes, this polymorphism is thought to have originated from central China, but again that doesn't make "the Han the most superior race on earth". I have no idea where you got that idea about it being a "magnificent do-it-all" gene, but I could only find one article about it being a possible tumor suppressor, so maybe point me to the right direction because I'd love to learn more about the apparently amazing gene. You clearly don't understand what you're talking about, or you do but you are using it to push your clearly flawed narrative. No race is "superior" to others. There is no "magnificent do-it-all gene". Go read more and maybe someday you'll realize how uneducated and racist you are.

I researched the differences when I was younger and learned about the ABCC11 gene that is expressed differently in East Asian populations vs. the rest of the world. The vast majority of Koreans express the dry earwax phenotype, and lack strong body odour (no matter how much they sweat).

Don’t take it personally. Smelly earwax is just another of the genetic quirks we inherit as part of one ethnic group or another. In new tests of earwax in Caucasian and East Asian men, yellow earwax from Caucasians gave off stronger odors than the dry, white kind. “We could obtain information about a person’s ethnicity simply by looking in his ears,” chemist Katharine Prokop-Prigge said. Prokop-Prigge is one of the researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia who measured the earwax smells. The team was inspired to see if ethnic groups have different earwax odors after learning that the same gene controls both a person’s underarm odor and the type of earwax they make. Ultimately, the researchers hope to mine our ears for whatever health secrets they may hold. Monell chemist George Preti calls earwax “a neglected body secretion.” Other research has shown that you can tell a person’s gender, health status and more from their underarm odors. “We think it possible that earwax may contain similar information,” Preti said on the center’s website. A giant earwax plug pulled from a blue whale recently revealed a fair bit of its life history, from its testosterone kicking in as it grew up to its times of stress (measured by cortisol levels) and contaminants it picked up from the waters it swam in. So who knows, maybe human earwax is trapping a trove of health information. Already, earwax is known to give a heads-up to two odor-causing diseases before they can be detected in blood or urine. One is called maple syrup urine disease, which makes urine smell delicious but is actually a dangerous and deadly metabolic condition. The other is alkaptonuria, or black urine disease, also plenty frightening. As for our different ear odors, they came about because of a tiny change, just one little letter in the genetic alphabet that long ago granted an East Asian population a reprieve from both smelly underarms and sticky earwax. This mutation appeared about 2,000 generations ago, according to a study published in 2011, and became more common across Asia over time. Today most East Asians and nearly all Koreans lack a chemical in their armpits that bacteria munch on to make body odor, because they carry this variant of the ABCC11 gene.
It depends on the type of gene. My younger sister(Korean) has osmidrosis, which is usually more common in Western people than Asian, she actually has wet earwax. On the other hand, I don't have osmidrosis like many Koreans and I just have dry earwax as Gabie does. Moreover, members of my relatives who have osmidrosis always have wet earwax. if not, they don't. Thus, I am pretty sure certain type of gene brings both osmidrosis and wet earwax together.

Edmond Dang Maybe it specialized among koreans cuz I didn't see anyone who has that waxy thing in my country.

Edmond Dang it is more like a genetic thing than national difference. But generally Asians have dry ear wax and western generally have wax wax 😂

Poor Gabie is subjected to the torture of you two 🤣 Hilarious video though and very fascinating.
Me casually eating noodles while watching Jolibee's reaction to earwax extraction.
Thanks, now im tempted to ask my korean friend if he has earwax.
Haha omg I know whyyy and yeah it's strange bc I thought all earwax was like the dry, flaky stuff (i'm asian so that's why)!! So i'm commenting pretty early in the video so maybe you guys talked about it later but the 2 versions of this gene not only determines what kind of earwax a person has, but it means that there are more or less of these sweat glands that lead to body odour! The dry, flaky dandruff normally means there are less of these sweat glands and the actual 'waxy' earwax means there are more!

But how does the body respond when they have to sweat? is there any pro or con side effect other than not smelling bad?
@Wra8h

@@kean6577 no. the bacteria that causes the smell isn't there simply. yeah that lucky.

@@kean6577 some people in the comments saying they're half white half Korean get the wet earwax, so that wet earwax gene is probably more dominant
Gabie had the 'Uh-Oh' Soojin era hairstyle before the 'Uh-Oh' Soojin era hairstyle had it 😂
This video totally explained a scene in a movie called Midnight Runners, thank you Gabie.
Josh saying "hi" and then Ollie said "ya" surprised me 😆 In greek, γειά (pronounced "ya") means hi !
I'm from the Philippines and i have the dark and waxy earwax but what Gabbie said that it's a family thing for cleaning is so true! Another fact i have hyperhidrosis is another factor of my earwax
I love how josh takes care of gabbie huhu goalss
real friendship right here, people.
My korean grandmama used to do the ear scraping thing that Gabie is talking about
Ollie: "Hey check out my earwax. Is yours the same??"
I regret watching this while eating my breakfast.....
Ollie has gotten handsome..
Omg i cannot tell you how right Gabie is because whenever I tell my dad he literally gets so excited. It's literally a core memory for all koreans
Josh and Ollie..... I love you guys..... but seriously..... please clean ear wax more often. 😂 and this is prob the 1st jolly video that I can't finish watching
Aww, Gabie. :( *sending you virtual hugs🤗*
the joy of being on buzzfeed's youtube on a daily basis haha
I totally get what Gabie is saying. It feels really good to clean your ear with that stick thingy.
