Asian Assembly 2013: Chinese Ribbon Dance

The Chinese Ribbon Dance consists of dancers channeling their emotions by waving long strips of silk ribbon, making calligraphic designs similar to rainbows and dragons. It originated during the Han dynasty, but evolved mainly during the Tang dynasty. Similar to the sleeve dance, the legend of the Chinese Ribbon dance is of an assassination attempt on the emperor. However, an official saved the emperor's life by blocking the assassin's sword with his long silk sleeve. The ribbons in the dance usually are 5 to 12 feet long, in festive colors such as red to represent happiness, and are attached to a small stick manipulated by the dancer. The ones used in this particular dance are 1 foot wide and 12 feet long in length.

+Lucile Iou Hey Lucile! We actually didn't buy these ribbons-We made them! :D They are pretty cheap and easy to make yourself. For each ribbon, we used about 1ft x 12ft fabric (really depends upon your preferences, choose fabric that is silky and shiny but not too heavy because then it becomes hard to maneuver), and then sewed them onto wooden dowels (I found $1 yard length ones from Walmart over here in the USA, and then sawed them in half). To prevent the ribbon from "shedding off" pieces, it helps to burn the fabric edges with a candle. Hopefully this helps!

+Camilla Jean Belleza-Casaol Hey Camilla! It took us a while to figure it out (and I'm not sure if it looks like a flower close-up) but you basically wrap the long ribbon around the top of the stick (not around and around one way, but in multiple directions like how you wrap yarn) and then tuck the last bit in loosely. Then, when you use some force, the ribbon unwraps itself out. Hope this helps!
