Ali can you tell Ashley about Jessica kellgren-fozard? She’s a lesbian mom with EDS (among many other things) and she would be such an excellent resource for her and her concerns with the pain and disability aspect. Love the pod!

We're Having Gay Sex is such a fantastic podcast. I never listened to podcasts until I got totally hooked on WHGS. Now I listen every week without fail.

Sex doesn't always have to lead to love. I am biased as a nonmonogmous person. I love that Ashley is exploring this.

Ali, I found you through Ashley's content and I think you're awesome and I've now subscribed to your channel. If it helps at all to understand Ashley's condition (EDS, ie Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) - which is something I have too... It's a genetic connective tissue disorder. It's a collagen defect. This collagen defect makes all the ligaments, etc extra stretchy and causes hypermobility, which means the joints are extra mobile and move in ways they shouldn't. Hypermobility is a bit different to just flexibility. So, you've got tendons which attach muscles to bone, and you have ligaments which attach bone to bone. Flexibility has more to do with the muscles, whereas hypermobility has more to do with the tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. Flexibility in normal non-hypermobile people can be trained, such as in a basic warm up before you go for a run so you don't end up with an injury, or stretching the muscles over time such as in dancing/ballet, to be more flexible. If you have hypermobility, your joints can go past the normal range of motion which can cause dislocations (the joint completely popping out of place) and/or subluxations (which is like a partial dislocation). With EDS, our loose joints cause a lot of pain, and mobility issues. It's not just the joints that are all loosey-goosey, but the tendons too (tendons can dislocate or sublux). I have loosey-goosey drunk spaghetti tendons. EDS is a genetic disorder, and can't be cured or fixed. The confusing part, is that those of us with EDS, through our hypermobility, can actually end up LESS flexible. That's because the muscles around our loose joints end up extra tight, because the muscles are trying to hold the joints in place. They're on guard all the time to compensate. EDS can also cause extra stretchy and soft skin and we end up looking younger than we are. I'm in my mid-40's and get mistaken for being in late 20's.
