maybe im being negative but i feel like most mmos are doomed in todays world. people form opinions too quickly, and too strongly. people have too many expectations of what the game "should be" or what they want THEIR experience to be like. back in the early 00s, mmos were so fresh and new and exciting, it was a whole new way to play video games and experience the internet. its just tough to live up to peoples expecations in todays age

also people keep asking for new and innovative mmos but don't think about how hard that is. there are dozens of mmos now and theyve basically done everything you reasonably can. its like music, its hard to be 100% original like people want.

I still hope this game will be great. And the way they are handling it seems great. Updating us regularly and each time it seems like they are coming up with better ideas. I hope they keep it up. Honestly ofcourse the game is gonna have problems that's a given considering the size of the game but I still think its gonna be awesome.

the last talk they had about combat was that some of the animations werent 100% transfered over since they switched the engine to make the game run more smoothly. Id assume thats a primary focus though as a lot of the earlier work was all on combat systems. I sure hope so. lol

For the immersion of notifying the player for events, they could have NPC's talk about the uneasiness, have them gossip about bad omens, and intro it into an eclipse as was said in the video. The timer to get ready would be how long it takes for the eclipse to become full and the duration would be when it starts to disappear.

Maybe they could have clues/cues at first to give players the organic opportunity to discover, and communicate to others, the event is coming, then after X seconds show the notification, but making it so the sooner you find out the better as in a bit more advantage to defend the attack or what have you.

In terms of immersive notifications, it's enough to just do environmental clues like how FFXIV uses special weathers to let players know a special boss fate has spawned somewhere in the region/map(Ixion). The "weather" isn't just like rain or thunder or anything, it can be any sort of area-wide phenomena like bits of magic accumulating in an unusual manner, rapid crystallization of primal elements, vertical tide inversion(like rain gradually dropping up rather than coming down... except "rain" would just be residual water from the land), etc. Great opportunities to throw in unique materials and/or items too(ingle-touched Sapphire?).

The main problem I think MMO's has is that gaming is evolving to become faster and more convenient over time. Most people wanna be able to get in-and-out of the game that's fast paced non stop action , and/or make a lot of progress quickly. I think to urge to follow a slower pace story and grind is dying

It's almost like most of the people who play mmo's are people who grew up with them, as a genre, I've found it impossible to convince anyone to play an mmo if they didn't play them when they were kids. And since those original mmo players are now older and have busy lifes, they can't play mmo's how they were meant to be played. Viciously.

Ashes of Creation sounds like it's going to be a heavily social/RP centric game but I could be wrong, seems like it's taking a lot of ESO, BDO, Age of Conan, Lineage 2, Ultima Online, Guild Wars 2 and Dark Age of Camelot.. Criminal flagging system (corruption system), open world guild wars/open world battlegrounds, player housing, naval combat, seamless open world experience, it seems like they are taking a lot from sandbox MMO's and making things more casual and less hardcore.. I doubt there will be full player looting (Albion Online/Darkfall).. haven't seen a MMO with a open world guild wars in a very, very long time though, especially one with no factions, this goes all the way back to Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online.. Everything sounds good on paper it's a question of if they can deliver, I am also curious with how much depth the game will have, this is extremely important, giving players things to do that they don't have to do but just cause they can cause it would be "fun" is something missing from a majority of MMO's.. Mini games are a good example of this, things like sitting down in a tavern and playing chess//poker(card playing)/gambling etc.. within the game, this made the Witcher 3 a hell of a lot of fun and you didn't even have to play Gwent to get through the game, people would just do it cause it was fun and it added re-playability and a lot of hours to the game.. Fun is feedback our brain gives us when we are absorbing patterns for learning purposes and this is why people have fun playing things like Chess, Tetris and even Atari games and why people still play them.. Games need to be treated as a creative art that gives us the ability to learn, chess teaches us strategy, Cities Skylines/City builders can teach us resource management, Tetris teaches organization..

@@Purriah I disagree.. It just costs 300 million dollars to design a good sandbox MMO and a very, very long time (im looking at you Star Citizen) its just that there really isnt any triple A sandbox MMOs and none of them have any interesting lore or ongoing plot/stories to follow.. Its already confirmed that Ashes of Creation is incorporating the best parts of traditional MMOs with innovative sandbox concepts and the game revolves around where everything is permanently impacted by your actions.. Its definitely going to be a hybrid.. It sounds like Guild Wars 2 but with a lot of very open world stuff you would see in Sandbox MMOs and this isnt necessarily a bad thing. Some sandbox games can have very innovative features and I am not talking about MMORPGs in general but you have games such as Satisfactory, Space Engineers, Raft, Medieval Dynasty and Valheim are all fun games.. Most single sandbox games that arent RPGs end up being really good simulators and its what sandbox MMOs are missing is a simulation experience.. Cooking Simulator for example is probably the most fun you will have cooking in a game than you will in any MMO..
