Ashes of Creation's Combat Design Will Open Up Build Diversity - Here's Why

Ойындар

In this video I go through Intrepid's design on rock paper scissors mechanics in ashes of creation and what else we've learned in the last live stream. Overall in past MMORPGs there are a lot less hard counters, which leads to players running the flavor of the month class a lot. Sometimes when things are extremely unbalanced you will see the majority of players on one spec.
Ashes is combatting this by allowing hard counter mechanics, and as long as they exist you can choose to run the flavor of the month, or run hard counters to it. This leads to players policing combat balance on their own, without the need of developer intervention.

I think Steven is absolutely doing the right thing by not balancing around 1v1.

It depends. Balancing around 1v1 can be entertaining even when you can get hard countered if skill is still the determining factor.

@@HalIOfFamer absolutely, realistically you will not spend most of your time in a group in the game, sometimes you wanna do something different than your group or guildies or w.e, even just basic gathering. If you get jumped on 1v1, the game should be balanced around skill expression not class strength and any class can beat any class if the player is better

Balance takes years. people really need to see it as additional content to overcome and not an unforgivable flaw.

It doesn't have to, but it fluctuates due to a variety of things...more often than not it's content related

You said what i have been saying for a couple years , and it is one of the biggest things im looking forward to in AoC . Building a class that just absurdly absolutely wiped the floor with just one lone archetype. It might not do alot of jobs , but it does its one job way better than anyone else.

I never understood the 1v1 duels in wow. I could top the charts in a bg with an underpowered toon and get my ass handed to me in a 1v1 with the most op toon. Winning a 1v1 was just an ego boost which I didn’t need. The points I got from bgs got me armor

Interesting ideas, but we really have no idea what class balance and how we can affect it until they show the augment system. It's quite worrisome that we have heard nothing on this system being so close to alpha two launch

Augment system is not planned for initial release of A2. I am not sure if this info is still valid but a couple years back intrepid said that augmentation is gonna be unlocked on lvl 25 and max lvl of A2 is planned to be 20 at 1st. Not sure how up to date this info is.

You could always make a class that specializes in 1 v 1 combat. So maybe he's weak in a group setting but incredibly powerful in small skirmishes and banditry.

Yeah like a lot of single target abilities or damage mitigation but only from the front. Good for 1v1 and small groups but lacking in larger squads or guild battles.

@@isth3reno1else I have doubts. Name one PvX game that's launched and survived as such? Either they fail, or they change. New World, DAoC, Warhammer- a few others long gone from memory. I get what this game is trying to sell, I'd love to buy in, but the base of players who would enjoy is too small. And what base there is, is already going to be divided by the short list of games that scratch the itch. Then asking for people to pay for both the game and a sub? New World going onto consoles will probably lead to it being more successful than AoC, and that is just not a fun thing to write. GW2 is reinvesting into PvP in this next expansion, and it makes me pessimistically optimistic- it's a fun game, the pvp feels fun, the wvw feels fun- and I don't need to any more money into it. I could go back to ESO if I wanted to pay a sub (because not having the crating bag is physically painful), but the Cyrodil and BG experience is just not fun to me. SWTOR's pvp is just absolute dog sh-t. Eve Online has pvp, but also feels like I'm playing Microsoft Excel the video game- nice graphics though, and cool ships. You have all the private servers for WoW, DAoC, CoH, Warhammer (bit painful install for this one) and SWG and other games. And if you really, truly hate yourself, you have any number of Korean torture driven MMOs to choose from. I really want you to be successful because I learned quite a bit from you in regards to ESO. When you quite playing, it kinda sucked. I want AoC to be a win if only for you to flourish by it. That said, I really don't have faith that it will.

@@isth3reno1else I wish you luck, but I have serious doubts. Can you name any PvX games that have been successful? I can't think of one. The most recent has been New World and its own team has said that the players want it to be more PvE-focused. Add to that, the market share for MMOs is tiny- the MMO genre is one of the smallest pieces of the pie chart of genres played. And players who do PvP already have their niches. ESO, GW2, SWTOR, Eve Online- a host of private servers for DAoC, Warhammer, SWG, Wow Asscension, Turtle Wow, and others. People who play those games aren't going to stop, and the people who jump from one MMO to the next will just keep jumping. Why pay for a game and then pay for a sub of that game in this day and age of buy once play forever, or buy once and sub because not having a crafting bag is the cruelest thing outside of SWTOR selling you your HUD piecemeal. I miss your ESO videos even though I can't stomach playing it anymore. And I do hope that AoC is not a flash in the pan experience- but I still think it probably will just flash, sputter, and die a slow death. It's just not in the cards.

You can’t compare fps PvP with mmo. In fps you want the classes not to op from each other so skill decides who wins. In mmo’s it’s more like who has the better gear multiple people spamming magic heals whatever. Not a bad thing but very different
