There is a saying in german that goes like “Tradition is not the worshipping of the ashes but passing on the fire“ (bad translation, sorry) and thats what the song reminds me of.

The only issue with the translation is one of grammar. It'd be more proper to phrase it as "tradition is not the worshipping of the ashes but THE passing on OF the fire." Other than that, you could idiomatically correct that to say "the passing on of the torch", which would be a much more common phrase in English. Other than that, your English is better than my german! all I know in german is flugabwehrkanone and panzerkampfwagen. oh and sonderkraftfahrzeug... and gewehr. but that's mostly it.

The first time I heard this song, it came up randomly in a sea shanty mix while I was blacksmithing. It cut through all the noise like a knife, and brought me to a standstill while I listened. I was surprised to find myself with a lump in my throat, thinking of all the things that have become lost to us, but might have been worth keeping. I'll never forge a knife with the speed, precision, or quality that the machinery in a factory could produce. If I need a knife, I could just BUY one, right? I could just BUY all the things I make. Am I just worshipping the ashes? Or is there something worthwhile in learning the thousand-year-old techniques? Practicing the skill my great, great grandfather did. With fire, steel, and my hands. Making my nephew his first knife for his 13'th birthday. Maybe I tend a flame that is worth tending.

The techniques are worth passing on. Even though factories are abundant now things can go down the metaphorical drain quickly. Blacksmithing is worth keeping. It may not be profitable now a days for majority of countries but it's a good hobby to have and can help build character and patience. It's not stagnant in the traditional sense either.

Do you enjoy the mere act of creation? Can you cherish the process? It's not a waste of time if it's an art, and it's art if you're creating something for the sake of creating something. You're an artist of steel and flame, and that's a tradition worth keeping up.

Watch that old fire as it flickers and dies, That once blessed the household and lit up our lives. It shone for the friends and the clinking of glasses. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- Capture the wild things and bring them in line And own what was never your right to confine. The lives and the loves and the songs are what matters. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- Do you feel heavy? Your eyes drop with grief. Your spirit is wild and your suffering is brief. So never you buckle and bend to the masses. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- Get round the fire with a glass of strong ale And tell us a story from beyond the pale. Bury some seeds and expect some strong branches. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- Now show me a man that can meet all his needs, For what we need most now is unity's seed: A common old song for all creeds and all classes. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- I'll tend to the flame... --- What will we do when the world it is ending, And time it is halted for friend and for foe? Try to hold on to the time as it passes. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. --- I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes. Idk why, but this song feels ancient in a sense. Like certain lyrics just make me think about time and whatever was lost to the past. The line "I'll tend to the flame, you can worship the ashes" makes me think of someone moving on, while someone close to them dwells on the past. Or I could be reading too much into this. That's just the vibe I feel from this song.

It makes me think of ancient tribes, desperately tending to their fires in the wilderness. In Ancient Greece, the temples to the Gods were built housing Great Fires that were meant to burn for eternity, never dying. The priests and followers had entire holidays dedicated to feeding the fire, and animals sacrificed to the Gods were cooked in its flames.

It's been explained that the song is a protest against those who believe shanties should only be preserved, not added upon. People who weren't even the original writers were copyrighting shanties "Capture the wild things and bring them in line, And own what was never your right to confine." so no, you're absolutely reading into it perfectly. To hell with those wanting shanties to be a thing of the past, we'll tend to the flame, they can worship the ashes.

This song, it tells a story. One where a friend cannot move on from the past. One where they see the world moving on without them. Even so much as having a friend beg them to "be careful, don't stay for long. I'll keep my eyes on the future. You can dwell on what was." You can take it out on folks that don't deserve it. A need to control what has no right to be owned. Remember your life, you loves, your loss. I'll keep my eyes on the future. You can dwell on what was. You seem so sad, you cannot move on. So focused on the past, come join us, friend. Don't let the naysayers dog you down. But if you insist, I'll keep my eyes on the future. You can dwell on what was. Come join us, companion; grab a drink. Tell us what ails you. We can move on together, plant seeds for the future. I'll keep my eyes on the future. You still dwell on what was. Nobody has their things together, everything in line. But if we band together, we can thrive as one. A common cause for old, young, man, woman, whomever. I'll keep my eyes on the future. You dwell on what was. Come join us at the fire. At the end of all things, when chaos takes root All the anger is free, unbent, unbridled. Remember who you are, who you love. I'll keep my eyes on the future. You still dwell on what was. I have to go. Don't stay for too long, old friend.

Damn, I really like this, but It's not the reading I got from it. I suppose that's what makes art, art huh? I thought this song was about moving on from traditions that have held us back, and have damaged society and the world as a whole. There's room for camaraderie and merit in remembering what was, but holding on "worshipping the ashes" is dragging people down. I suppose the real lesson here is we are all slaves to our biases Power to you tho, for your powerful words

To me, it represents one moving on from a moment of grief, guilt, or loss. Some people can focus on the now, the living. Others can't move on, haven't stopped mourning. They worship the ashes of flames past burnt, while others tend to the living flames.

From the context, I think it’s talking about either nature or the world or something like that. Essentially, saying, “I’ll be here, tending to the earth, and you can go embrace the modern world/capitalism, but ultimately, the thing you are figuratively or literally worshiping is cold and lifeless, without the heat and spark that defined it’s components. You can build a cathedral from wood and stone, but it is cold and empty, made of dead things.

This song brought me and my freinds together so, so, long ago. I come back to it in my time of need, i know it will not bring back those we lost and those that left, but still i hope. As we grew some of us stayed, but there is fewer of us then there was. Im 19 now, soon to be 20, now part of the military as an e3. On the nights after work i remember the agreement to always stay in touch. I remember the agreements to keep living no mater how tough life gets, as we will allways stand stronger together. There was 17 of us, now we are four, we lost some to depression, and other's to disease's that cant be cured. Some left for college or work and never returned for various reasons. I know life has been harsh on me and my group in or still breathing lives, but i also know that life has been gracious in our short time on this planet as well. I have yet to spread the metiphorical ashes of my fallen and lost friends. But just now that if any of you see this that i wish you all the best and when next we meet, drinks are on me, same place, same time

Man. I’d love an official interpretation of this, but the sheer diversity in interpretations is so cool. My own interpretation is that this is about a man who keeps a safe place for me those who need it, like a bar. He tends to the flame, the source of comfort, while those who warm themselves by it carry the memory of it with them in the ashes of their own fire, forgetting the man who lit it and kept it burning. But he does not mind, he merely lights it anew when the next weary traveler comes to seek shelter. A simple man, who only seeks to warm the lives of others even if his own life will be forgotten.

This song to me means more of the dying of western civilization. As we’ve built and advanced from the bronze ages statues, to mythical heroes, to the degeneracy of the modern age, where Marshall men and means are dying out and being replaced by the bug like existence of the eastern cultures. Worshipping the ashes of those that came before, but a small few must tend to the flame of the west, while the majority worships the ashes

I played a Half-Elven bard from Ardeep Forest (Forgotten Realms) in my last D&D campaign. It's the kind of place that looks at half-elves as humans, and as humans as only slightly better than vermin. He joined up with a Sun Elven ranger who had come to hate the decadence and superiority of her folk (despite being high-born herself), a Druid who truly took up the mantle of "the purity of the wilds comes before all else" and a red-scaled dragonborn with a passion for firestorms. The big bad: the resurrecting god Bane (yes, that Bane) and Szass Tam (yes that Szass Tam). Together. Our greatest ally? The now-dead Khelben Arunsun (yes, that Khelben Arunsun); the final-battle point-of-no-return was a day of time stop as a final gift before the last shard of Khelben's clinging soul faded from the world. If I didn't know for a fact that noone in the group but I had ever heard this song before, I'd have sworn it was intentional. Instead, my bard "composed" this song as a nod to the "gods among men a humble bard was lucky enough to count as friends."

Man coming back to this song after losing both my parents recently really gives me an new view on this song. I've been the flame all this time which my mother and father were tending and making memories with to so I can grow strong and unbreakable with nothing stopping me to be who I want to be, while the ashes are now my parents that I "worship" with my life for as long as I keep living. Most likely not how this song is looked on but for me it still brings me comfort to listen to this song.

today this song took on a whole new meaning for me. I've listened to this song many times since you boys posted it but it is only since the reality of losing both my grandfather to cancer and my brother possibly developing an extremely deadly, painful and insanely rare disease (got the news yesterday) has the meaning of the lyrics changed. Thank you TLJ for posting this as I believe this will help me during my time of mourning. Update (6/3/23): Well I'm back again. This time with a double whammy. My great grandmother died a few hours ago on the same day my other beloved grandfather got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I'll likely also listen to this when he passes away within the next year (we don't know how long he likely has left). Thank you again TLJ for this song. Just like the rest of your music, it's the only thing currently helping me through these difficult times. Maybe one day this song, alongside a few others I listen to of yours, will be the last music to accompany me to the grave (if allowed to of course). Thank you.

I listened to this and was brought to mind of the native fire keepers maintaining the traditions and lore, a living, growing lore, of stewardship and life in harmony with the planet. While other cultures strip the planet, turning it to ashes and then worshiping the dead things they had managed to hoard. I enjoyed later finding out the songwriter's intent as well. But a song's first impression is usually the one that stays with you.

This makes me dream of a world where dragons and fae and all things mystical exist; where I can dance among them in their faerie rings and their halls of majesty. Or sitting around a bonfire with my companions, resting from our long journey home. Staring up at the sky, into that dark abyss glittered with drops of silver. Dreaming of magic and wonder. Tending to the flame of our lives and our purpose.

This song fits Ashes of Creation super well, and could legitimately be used as a trailer for the game to show what it is. The start of the song, when it's rather quite and melancholy, would start with a slow zoom out of a recently destroyed Node. We get some pan shots of the different destroyed buildings, including the tavern, with some people poking about the rubble. When they sing "capture the wild things and bring them in line", we would see a few members of the already-low numbered city going out and taming/hunting animals for node progression and gold. This goes back and forth between the city and PvE content; we get to see the different quests with slowly increasing members doing increasingly difficult tasks, and get to watch how the city grows the more work they do. Right before the song gets quiet again, and the song hits it's loudest and most invigorating point, is when we see the city being roused to go get revenge on the node that destroyed them (which could be hidden in the background of some scenes, as a reminder of their motivation). They march off with banners raised, and when night falls with the node on fire/destroyed, the song gets quiet and we see a different character in the tavern. He's singing the song, and notices our main characters celebrating their victory. He folds his game, walks up to the main character, and before the song ends, we see the enemy's insignia somewhere on his person, and cut to black, leaving the audience wondering why it ended there.

I have loved this song for a long time now, but I just gained a whole new appreciation for this song because of my GF. I was having a really bad day at work and made a poem that I sent to her. She really liked it and could feel my pain through reading it. She then sent me a whole bunch of videos saying what the lyrics in this song are: you're suffering is brief, you're strong and can get through this, don't let other people bring you down, your past relationships don't define who you are, you are important to me, and I will be there for you. I added this song to the playlist in making for her. This song helped me both creatively and mentally, and I can't thank you guys enough for making such a beautiful song that has so many beautiful messages in it.

I love this song, I love how intense it is, I love that it was written as a counter to people who try to keep new people and things out of the folk and shanty community. It's "Your spirit is wild and your suffering is brief" that makes me start crying each time though. The reminder that we are able to be so much and here for so little time... Something about it talks directly to the part of me still grieving my dad in a way that very few things have.

So uh I was inspired to write something. Sorry that its long and not very good. Anyway enjoy. It's late at night. The war has been finally won but its cost was too high. I could only stand by and watch, acting out my role as dictated. Tending the last fire, soon to be put out. The end has come for them. I never had the intention to kill anyone, all I wanted them to do was to enjoy the world I had built. And they had! Laughter and love flowing throughout their adventure, tears shed like a cicadas shell early summers eve and friendships that grew no matter the circumstance. Their garden flourished and they had made it that way without help, planting their seed in the very soil I created for them! I remember when they all were children, stumbling and rolling low, cheering loudly when they defeated an enemy I had deemed deadly only to ask for more. I was so proud of them, like a father watching his son fish or a mother watching her daughter dance. These adventurers were my most precious objects, I held so much love and care for them in my heart that it began to hurt. I watched these favored adventurers closely, gifting them presents and other companions so their world felt more alive. There is no amount of words I could string together that could express my love and admiration for these adventurers! I did everything for them, let them run freely, and cared for them when they needed it. Unfortunately, I could only watch from afar, only joining when it seemed appropriate and experiencing things by secondhand but I didn't mind for they loved this world I had built. They have fought valiantly and I could never be prouder but this world only exists in brief periods. A fire only burns for a short while. When they had won, I was so happy. All their hard work finally paid off but what next? The BBEG had been defeated, the kingdom freed, friends saved and lovers died. Was this enough for them? Had I created a world that would stay with them for the rest of their lives? Will they stay by my side and enjoy my fire again? Alas its never enough, they want more. I tried to satisfy the hungry beasts but it is never enough, their hunger too great to satiate. I have tried to change my fire, introducing bright colors and enticing effects but alas they grew used to it. They have tasted what I had to offer, drank my ale, and basked in the warmth of my fire but it's not enough. Most have left now in order to search for other exciting fire, and in this search, they have abandoned my fire, never to return. Some take the ashes with them, in order to remember my company and others have spit on the very ashes they have created. It always hurts to see them leave but I have hope that they return to my fire. This fire that I have tended to for years, cultivated and protected no matter what happened. The very same fire that they have tossed away, whether it be of frustration or just plain boredom. I've tried tending to their garden, fertilizing the soil and harvesting the fruit but the plants have contracted a rot, overgrowing with weeds and festering with diseased riddled bugs. The garden has been abandoned, it is too late to try to save it. I have slaved over this garden, tended the pyre, done everything for these adventurers but it is never enough. These adventurers...no...these players who have gathered in my home, drank from my goblet, enjoyed my world and relaxed in my fire have disowned me, leaving me behind as they search for another fire. Such is the vicious cycle of life and so I await in my cabin, tending my whittling fire in hopes another will join me, to worship the ashes that have grown. I harbor no hatred towards the ones that leave, smiling softly as they leave my fire, holding hope that they may come back. I harbor only grief at the memories that remain in my ashes. God if only I may hear the laughter filling the silence again, to have my fire rise once again in a great spectacle as the goblets never dry. I may be the god of this world but I am at their mercy.

I really love all the different interpretations of these lyrics flying around in the comments. To me, it's a song about religiosity a lot more directly. (Christianity specifically, because I view things from that angle, but probably it transfers to other traditions as well.) I think it works really well as an anti-orthodoxy song, about how we've missed the original point of the wild, untamed idea of faith, and the stories that was supposed to enliven the soul have become legal texts.

What will we do when the world it is ending? And time it is halted for friend and for foe? Try to hold on to the time as it passes... I'll tend to the flame, you can worship the ashes... Anyone else feel this really hard when reflected against the current age of oncoming climate disaster? It hits me RIGHT in the "we had over 100 years to do something about it and we didn't"

This song just really makes me think of the game Frostpunk. My brain has even made a little animation to go along with it.
