I've witnessed the Taiko Drummers live. You don't just HEAR the drums, you actually FEEL the drums beat inside your body! Incredible show.

I was stationed in Japan in the 90's and went to see these performances on several occasions. There is nothing to compare the actual sound of these drums during the shows. Everything I have head including my own recordings could not reproduce the experience of hearing it live!

Was gonna post the same thing... There is NO way to replicate the experience of a Taiko group. Not just the sound, but the FEEL of the power of those magnificent drums cannot be replicated...

Japanese culture is fascinating in their pursuit of meticulous perfection. 5:31 The scrollwork on the inside of the drum as they said tunes the sound, but it could probably be done alot faster with the same resulting sound. Yet the craftsman carves the beautiful patterns onto a surface that almost no one will see. And for them the pursuit transcends the excellence they achieve and becomes a spiritual path on its own.

Dig Exactly what I said Amazing. I had no idea they were formed from a single log of wood. The inside is more beautiful than the outside. Amazing. Hand crafted inside and out. These drums must cost an arm and a leg. The workmanship is unbelievable.

You'd be right on the price. They make four sizes of the medium-sized drums they were working on in the majority of this video (nagado-daiko), and they range from $2500 to $6500 on their US website. They also make one model of odaiko, the largest sizes of taiko drums, and it goes for $20,200.

They cost a fortune, but I was able to find one in a small shop that was obviously used, but still sound great. But having this thing MAILED/DELIVERED to you is where the problems are starting.

The gloves are way worse. I've seen the firsthand effects of gloves + machinery. Dude at a factory I worked at got his real glove caught in some sort of spinning device. I think it twisted wires to make cables. Like a chuck on a lathe sort of. Ripped the glove off and his skin along with it. The most literal example of degloving in all of history I'd bet. Not pretty.

I wonder if you can re-tune a taiko drum. I play percussion and leather headed drums usually have a tendency to become untuned due to humidity and playing. How do they re-tune the drum if that happens, considerind the fact that they nail the hide to the body of the drum?

  • @taikocttam3832

In a lot of cases, larger taiko such as the one you saw in the video will have their drumheads made with the hide of a pregnant cow.

You guys need to do your research Better ! This Video is not entirely correct, 1st). Taiko Drums DID NOT COME FROM CHINA or Korea, Japanese women actually came up with the idea of Drums so at evening when the fog rolled in, they would go to the mountain tops & High Ridgers by the Ocean and play the Drums so their Husbands would know which way to Row to come home and NOT get lost at sea! 2nd.) when they are done putting the pattern inside the Drum then they install leaf gold all around the inside for a better sound ! China / Korea, YOU MUST KNOW they are Enemies of Japan, YOU WANT TO START A WAR !
