I am maintaining a pygmy and compact pocket-diary to jot down themes and topics -including a little latin self-help - just wanted to know your reflections on- how to propagate even deeper in it.

That's a very interesting question! My own reading/writing journal is very simple - I usually just keep track of the books I read, quotes I like, or scene/setting/character ideas for writing - so I think it really depends on your purpose. For deeper study of others' literary works, I would probably try analyzing as well as noting themes or topics I gather from other books so I can explore more about the root ideas behind them and the author's purpose in including them, but I rarely do things like this unless I am very invested in the book. I also like doing "author studies," in which I read several works from the same author and connect common ideas between the works. I think this helps in analyzing the author's purpose and getting better acquainted with the style and devices that author typically uses. I hope this helps! :)
