As I Lay Dying THEN VS. NOW - Riffs From Shadows Are Security and Shaped By Fire (Riff Battle)

One of the most popular bands to emerge from the early 2000s wave of "melodic metalcore," As I Lay Dying combined Swedish melodeath inspired riffing with the emotional choruses and heavy breakdowns of core music. Their early releases set the blueprint for many bands to come - but how do the riffs from their latest releases stack up to the first album that put them on the map? You be the judge!
Artist: As I Lay Dying
Albums: Shadows Are Security (2005) and Shaped By Fire (2019) + new single Roots Below (2021)
Tuning: Drop C and Drop A

The only problem with "Shadows Are Security" is the equalization, because you can't feel the guitar riffs' weight. The riffs are heavy, but the equalization doesn't give them feeling they deserve. There's a video where AILD plays "Meaning In Tragedy" in Jumping Turtle, and the equalization makes the song sound as heavy as It really is.

One of the things i like about As I Lay Dying is that the music is so melodic. Unlike any other modern metalcore bands which the guitar sounds like broken machinery called "djent". As I Lay Dying makes me headbang right from the intro through the verse, the chorus etc. Other modern bands just use breakdowns to get the people headbanging. But hey, i guess it's just my taste cuz i like melody in metal.

Straight up, the musicians simply got better. The guitarists and drummer became more technically proficient, opening the door for them to do more and be faster/heavier at times, without completely losing what they were originally about. I can play any early As I Lay Dying stuff on guitar no problem, but much of their later stuff gives me problems.
