AS Biology - Biodiversity and sampling OVERVIEW (OCR A Chapters 11.1-5)

Ch.11 Biodiversity can be largely split into two halves: 11.1-5 and 11.6-8. This video covers the first half, focusing on the different types of biodiversity and sampling techniques. For details, you can refer to the chapter number that is written next to the different "bubbles" on the mind map.
**Please keep in mind that this is an overview where I covered the most important points within the chapters. I do recommend reading through the textbook after watching the video to ensure you've really understood the content well. For some parts, I've selected some key examples to illustrate and elaborate, as this chapter is extremely wordy, I've opted for a slightly smarter way of studying, which is to pick some examples to learn well and just be aware of the rest to save "memory space" in my brain...**

    These summary mind maps are proving to be an awesome way to go through key content in each chapter...! I'm doing the same for my classes, which was where I got the inspiration from when planning to make this video :) Glad to hear the videos are helping you! And wow, that dedication!!! I'm impressed :D All the best with your revision and thanks for watching!

    Honestly trying to do this during quarantine has made me not understand at all, so thank you for making it so easy to get. I did chuckle though when you said that i would've done some of it in fieldwork... rip my PAG work corona.

    Haha glad it helped! Yes it can be hard to self-teach a lot of this stuff so glad you found the videos helpful :) you'll do some fieldwork at some point don't worry. Technically you can grab a tape measure and something that's like a loop or sorts as a quadrat and do some sampling in your garden if you've got one XD

  • @BioRach

    @BioRach

    Sorry I'm not sure. Personally not familiar with the AQA spec, but the science itself should be the same! I'd imagine the differences would mainly be the level of detail and question types, but better check with your textbook or ask your teachers to know for sure :) Thanks for watching!

    Just to clarify, at 14:41 isn't the sampling method described an interrupted belt transect - as opposed to a line transect?

  • @BioRach

    @BioRach

    5 жыл бұрын

    As far as I'm aware, you only need to learn about random sampling and systematic sampling using a line/belt transect. I guess the term "interrupted belt transect" seems to be describing the same thing...?

  • @d2012dd

    @d2012dd

    @@BioRach I thought that a line transect is when only species touching the tape measure are recorded, whereas a belt transect is when a quadrat is used adjacent to the tape (e.g. for %cover). It's a minor detail nonetheless.

    @@BioRachan interrupted belt transect is when you place quadrats on the line at intervals, to save time, instead of right next to each other.

    You're correct, you don't have to memorise the equation. But you do have to learn what the symbols mean, which is what a lot of people struggle with...! As long as you learn the symbols' meanings, then you'll be fine :)
