I started flying when, as a teenager, I listened for the first time to the great composers in the history of music. But I only reached the stratosphere with the composers of the 20th century. And now, 67 years old, with Arvo Part I am already at the limits of the solar system.

I love the harmonies and sonority's that Arvo imbues into his scores; also the feelings of depth in the strings to me is deeply profound and spiritual. His music is an experience for the listener, unlike lighter music; one has to really listen carefully to discover the sheer beauty of his music.

Keith Terrett Then, you may also like music by Peteris Vasks, a latvian composer (e.g. "Voices", a symphony for strings), of by Tristan Murail, a French composer (e.g. "Le Lac") as they are also based on the same diaphanous aesthetics.... Enjoy !

"Arvo Pärt’s glorious new Fourth Symphony is subtitled “Los Angeles” for a couple of reasons. The first is that it was commissioned in part by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. The second is a little more complex (...) Arvo had been toying with the idea of texts relating to the concept of guardian angels. With the commission from a city whose name literally means City of the Angels, the Orthodox text Pärt chose became “Canon of the Guardian Angel.”

Well, first of all, I am no where close to being a 'dude', so picture me as a hot redheaded female, which I am, and since I do appreciate humor (which you didn't really pull off too well) I would have grinned every so slightly had you replied "You in the middle of a mind blowing orgasm or something?" (which would involve every nerve in my body and my impending lack of composure) but alas, you went straight to the other side and chose a 'poo' comment. No, no shits. That only happens to me when I am forced to listen to country music.

if coughing adds atmosphere,- which I think is utter crap,- then why not record a room full of people coughing ? this habit in a concert hall to say the least is very irritating, and a distraction. if it were possible to eject the coughers, one would soon find out that people soon learned to stop this irritating habit. -if someone yawns, then others follow, I think it is the same very often with the coughing.

Referring to Gabriele Traverso's comment (which inspired many opposing responses) -- there is music for different settings and times. If I want to listen to music late at night, I would not put on Dvořák's "Carnival Overture" nor Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries." I can see how a Larghissimo tempo might be torture for some, but it is perfect for me in contemplation or repose.

WOW! Can it be true..? Arvo is showing his "American" side! I remember him saying that he does not compose his music himself but picks it up from the atmosphere, it is already there. Wether that might be metaphorical or not, you really hear him picking up on something, I really feel he's channeling Los Angeles, a very broody warm atmosphere, a little bit in la-la-land, there's something about L.A. no one understands and you hear that in this piece. It also has something to do that this was commissioned by Essa Pekka-Salonen and the L.A. orchestra for Walt Disney concert hall. Pekka-Salonen was director for L.A. Philharmonic at the time and he was not in good standing with them and I hear that goes beyond just a mere disagreement between him and the orchestra (an inevitable break-up was the result). Anyhow the right word to describe this al is: GALVANIZING!

***** American side? lmfao. It may be a concept he believes in but at any rate it's picking up the atmosphere from his individual point of view, ergo he only picks up his own atmosphere. It's like saying that his other works sound like Vienna or Tallin. There's absolutely nothing about L.A in there, if that was the case, it would sound like a soulless entity looking for popular appeal.

Interesting comment, about him 'picking up something' in the atmosphere. I'm from England, and Part has a home in East Anglia, I think, where he wrote a couple of small pieces for a church there... it too has 'an atmosphere, of place perhaps.

I see some people see Parts music as sad,I see it as enlightening perhaps even a new beginning or rebirth of one's thoughts when this composers sublime music is played in your general direction. ❤😊
