Arturia KeyStep 37 Review - Is It Worth To Upgrade?

Музыка

In this in-depth review, I take a close look at KeyStep 37, the latest member of Arturia’s midi controller keyboard family. Compared to the regular-sized KeyStep, the slightly larger model has been upgraded with many useful improvements, such as a 3 octave keyboard, rotary encoders, a new chord mode and more.

    Thank you so much for this very clear and informative Video. IMHO you pointed out everything that seems to be important to know before you decide. I have mixed feelings about the new KeyStep 37. I am sure it's over all a great sequencer / midi controller and it seems that Arturia improved something that was allready pretty good. But on the other hand I'm wondering why they didn't do some things better. Because I know they could have done. For example the knobs: The five year old Beatstep Pro allready had endless and touch sensitive encoders. So it would have been nice to see them here, too. Are they really so much more expensive to build? Also the sync switches. I mean, this is not really a big problem, but WHY? For the other things I think we can expect an update from Arturia. For me the most important improvement would be using the leds to indicate which Notes are in the scale and which not. Thanks again!

    I just checked with in Ableton Live and there is no midi controller layout for the SKS37 available in Analogue Lab yet. So as of now you would have to assign the knobs manually and save it as an instrument rack eg. I assume they wil add the preset later as they did with most of their other controllers.

  • @XanderEwald

    @XanderEwald

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't really see KS37 as a controller to address multiple things at once, although you could pull it off to a certain degree. The CC knobs are freely addressable and with MIDI-through-ports or a split box, you could use the 4x4 CC controls on multiple destinations at once, be it hardware or your DAW. As for your question on the synth, it is impossible to recommend anything without knowing more about your preferred workflow, skillset, level of knowledge, musical taste, budget etc. There are thankfully plenty of options available right now, so there really should be something for everyone.

    So if I used this as a controller for a Mono synth would it polyphonic the mono synth? please be kind I’m new to synth hardware and I’m still learning. Just want to see if this would be a good option for expanding my Microbrute instead of buy a super expensive polyphonic synth. Thanks!

  • @vprice509

    @vprice509

    3 жыл бұрын

    It would not turn the mono synth polyphonic. What it would do, though, is add some new features that would expand the sound capabilities of the Microbrute. The strum mode, arpeggio mode and (maybe) the chord mode could play the notes in such a way that it would *almost* sound polyphonic. Not several notes at once, but notes in such rapid succession (that all go together) so that you get a richer sound. The Microbrute sounds awesome, but the sequencer is pretty basic. The sequencers on the Keystep series are quite a bit more powerful. I'm new to synth hardware, too. Sounds like just a couple months ahead of you. Keep watching KZread. I have learned SO much from the synthtubers out there, and there are lots of them. I find videos like this lots more informative than official company videos.

    Keystep 32 and XKey 25 Air (for Bluetooth and poly-aftertouch). Use Keystep with iPad and now with Iridium/Moog (midi) . Always missed assignable knobs, and we still missing transport control. Still not expensive for lights/knobs/dual. Would take 49 keys :) Why makers never notice no one travels per-say with mobile kB, but you see Keystep literally on every studio table because of small footprint. Poly-AT would make it killer if anything else. .... what, it does not align to black keys?!?1 haha Cool review DP!

    I can imagine this feature will be added in a future update. Arturia are pretty good at improving their gear over time.

    I like your videos, but I think an ad every 3 minutes is bit too much... actually quite annoying...

    Will Josef Thanks for your feedback! Unfortunately, KZread now places mid-roll ads automatically. I usually turn them off after uploading, but might have forgot in this video.
