Artist Demonstrating Picasso’s Reduction Linocut Technique
Conservator and printmaker Christina Taylor demonstrates the reduction linocut printing technique pioneered by artist Pablo Picasso and master printer Hidalgo Arnéra to create the vibrant print “Jacqueline with Glossy Hair,” 1962. Taking us into her printmaking studio, Taylor unveils the layers of creative revision, correction, and adjustment behind the finished print.
Central to this process is the concept of a “print state,” which traditionally refers to a version of a print that precedes the final product. By tracing how artists move step by step to painstakingly rework and refine their images, we can explore how artists across time have maximized the iterative potential of states, for reasons ranging from the practical to the whimsical.
This suite of progressive prints from Picasso's “Jacqueline with Glossy Hair,” 1962, will be on view at the Harvard Art Museums in the exhibition “States of Play: Prints from Rembrandt to Delsarte,” from September 4, 2021-January 2, 2022. By decoding creative choices that the artist pursued or abandoned in each successive step, the exhibition helps uncover the full breadth of experimentation and demystifies printmaking terminology and techniques.

You are gifted both in your ability to print and to teach. Every word was important. No blabla, slow enough to having time to digest. This - for me - is the best film on youtube. You should be proud of it! Thank you very much

Those prints are one of a kind, indeed, since it cannot be reproduced again and again like they do now by using different plates. 👍😊

Excellent teacher. Talented artist and craftsperson. Thanks for sharing this.
I've watched a lot of reduction linocut how-tos and yours is head and shoulders above the rest! I'm off to try it myself tomorrow, feeling a bit more confident after watching this! Thanks!

You can do it! Let us know how it goes!
By far one of the best and most concise tutorials on reduction linocut techniques. To have the "print state" suite just adds to the value of this lesson. Mahalo Christina!
Thank you for producing such a clear and concise demonstration of reduction linocut technique! This is the best example I've found-easy to follow and with just the right amount of information. I would really love to see a how-to of a couple simple registration techniques. I'm having a lot of trouble with that. :)
Excellent video! I found the book ‘Picasso Linocuts 1958-1963’ by Donald H. Karshan in a vintage shop in NYC in 2021.
I really enjoyed this demonstration. I did note that when cutting out the blue you had to leave the lines for the black. I would have assumed that the blue blob would be just cut out but then you would have lost those black lines. This is a very important point to understand the reduction process. And I just also realised the same goes for the red and yellow. I've learnt a lot from this video, thanks.
Mesmerising! Singe most informative and charismatically delivered reduction videos on YT. Now, I understand it. Thanks!
Christina Taylor thank you. You are a superb teacher. It's so easy to learn and understand with you.
yowzaaaah! Thank you for taking the time to do this demonstration the right way. Well done.
The best explanation and demonstration of reduction linocut printing I've found. Absolutely perfect.

We used to do this in school in my youth! 😊
Learn new things. Amazing technique. Thanks for sharing this.
I got a BFA in printmaking 20 years ago and have finally found the perfect hybrid of painting and printmaking... Encaustics!
By far the best demonstration of reduction lino print Ive seen ever...thank you so much for sharing...very eloquent and easy to follow...Bravo! 👏👏
You're great. I will project a similar thing before my exam in 29th July. Thanks 4 your demonstration.
I really enjoyed this and learned a lot. Best part is when the editions done it's over.
Finally an explination and tutorial that makes sense! Thank you!!
This is a really excellent demonstration of Picasso's technique, which is usually very misunderstood.
😀 I love the monster face on the press.
this is amazing! what is the poor man's/DIY version of the press machine used?
Thank You for professional explanation of Picasso's technik of reduction's linocut😍
Very well explained and demonstrated. I almost forgot about this process. I imagine with some forthought and a graphic tool like Photoshop, you can realize that various layers before cutting the actual linoleum block.
Brilliant demo ! Thank you . This is a hard technique for me to get my head around - it is a very different way of thinking . Kind regards - Judi - Australia

Very clear and precise. Thank you.
Wonderful presentation. Very jealous of your beautiful studio.
That was the best how to video I've ever seen. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for sharing this. It's one thing to see a work of art and appreciate it from an aesthetic standpoint. But sometimes, there comes a work that, through technique, makes the observer think: "how in the world did they do this?" For those that like to take the world apart, it's doubly interesting. I also appreciate that the destruction of the linoleum at each stage turns the mass-production ability of the press on its head, forcing a kind of scarcity like more traditional mediums.
Excellent, thank you!
Excellent reproduction of the progressive cut out method. Cheers
What she said! Excellent job; I can't wait to try it.....
muse masterclass🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Excellent! 👏😘
You are an awesome teacher!!!!!!
I'm getting addicted to lino cuts - this is a fantastic demonstration thank you - like those below im looking forward to trying this.

Love these series :))
Perfect presentation. Thank you so much
Thankyou for such a wonderful explanation. I don't have a press, but I still think this is achievable at home.
Realy great done! Thank you!
Just great explained! Thank you.
I just got started in printmaking. bought my first lino cut few days back. And this video helped me understand Reduction Lino cut in such a beautiful way that it felt like I made the work... Thank you Taylor. I hope to now try my hands at Reduction technique and as you said "Reduction tech. is not a simple process. It requires some serious planning...." and this is what I am looking for right now, something new something challenging :)
WOW!! What a great presentation !
A time ago I saw an exhibition at the Lever gallery in Liverpool of a succescioin of a Picasso print so you could see the order of things. Very interesting as is this video Thank you
Excellent demonstration
Terrific work, Ms. Taylor.😃
So cearly explained, thank you. I can now watch artists doing this with greater understadning.
FYI I have watched this video at least 15 times. I'm actually trying to do this technique now. I think you explained it really well, so me watching it multiple times is about my learning curve. But it is really hard to find a step by step tutorial on reduction printmaking. This is really clear, and I appreciate it. I've just had trouble with paper, ink, carving, so I keep coming back to it because I am going to do this! Also Picasso was my first art love. I was very "off" him for a while due to his ...bad boyfriend status. 😂 Still you never forget your first ...😢
And thank you for all your effort. I learned from my teacher 50 years ago and no one has really done it clearly
Very informative! Thanks for the video.
I did not see this question asked, so here goes... Since there is so very little yellow in the final image, why did you ink the entire lino with yellow? Most of that yellow ik will be hidden. (My guess was that perhaps little stray hit of yellow might add "interest" to the final, but I really don't notice that much in your print.) Could you not have just inked the yellow circle alone? I almost forgot to thank you for this video; it is really thorough, so thanks sincerely!
Fantastic! Wow, I have always struggled understanding this technique. You did a great job making it look easy! Even though its totally not… lol
Wonderful demonstration
Really excellent teacher.
It's interesting that KZread suggested this to me. I'm currently doing something similar with 3d printing where each layer of plastic is a different color and builds upon the previous layers but in most cases covers them up as the reduction linocut printing covers previous layers.
Thank you so much for this (and your other) excellent video demonstrations. So inspiring and clear. I hope the series continues :)
Thank You Christina :)
First class print. That is a decent size press you have in your studio, the whole studio layout looks a very inviting working space. I was wondering if you also do intaglio and etching prints on the press. Thanks for the video.
This is a masterful demonstration. Thank you very much for the great planning and care you took to make this complex technique accessible.
This takes kindergarten arts and crafts to whole new level.
Thank you Christina for this excellent demonstration of Picasso’s famous technique. This video is a very clear demonstration and very well presented thank you.
COOL! thanks for showing us.
This is amazing , not sure i can get away with perfecting it without a machine but cool method I will forsure play with in the future .
Thanks for your well organized, eloquent 'how to' of reductive lino printing. i've shied away from the technique due to the amount of planing required. You have simplified the steps for me.
Fascinating. Thank you.
Great demo, clear and concise for a difficult process. Thanks
This is such a fantastic video. Thank you for giving us such a clear, inspiring way to try reduction.
Just phenomenal! Bravo, and thanks for sharing.
Fantastic demonstration - thank you!
Fantastic! Thank You..
Thank you Christina for this wonderful demonstration of this beautiful print (great job btw!). I am in the process (planning phase) of doing a reduction print. My print will be my Christmas card that I will be giving to family and friends this year. I want to do about 30 prints. So I had better get going. Thanks again, take care.
That was fantastic! New to linocut art but feeling less intimidated, now. I can't wait to get to this point. Thank you so much!
What a fascinating process!
Brilliant, thank you
Fascinatin! Thank you for explaining it so well
thank you for understanding to make colorful printing.
Helpful tips for my first reduction linocut print.
Thank you for sharing, Christina. Brilliant work.
Thank you very much! Fantastic demo!
Amazing tutorial! I appreciate so much your sharing the technique used by Picasso. It is complex, but you have easily broken down the steps to make it easy to follow. Be especially blessed!!!
Excellent demonstration thank you so much.
Excellent way of showing the reduction technique. I especially liked inking the background first. Planning is needed and the step-by-step was really helpful.
Thank you for the lesson.
Thank you for this! Very well done indeed!
Thank you. That was excellent.
That was so well explained! Thank you.
Wonderful demonstration! I have always wanted to try this but will stick to mono prints for a while to practice
I agree ... that's a lot of work ! ! !
What an excellent explanation you gave, thank you! I'm inspired to try my own ... the challenge is in the planning/thinking, absolutely.
What a cool process, thanks for sharing!
How brilliant, and how instructive!
