The most effective and deadliest weapon of WW2. Its crew included a man whose job was to exchange barrels to avoid damage from overheating. In heavy combat usage barrels had to be replaced every few minutes. They would be placed aside to cool, and other barrels would be installed. Once cooled the barrels would again be reinstalled. The procedure was quite simple, with just a few movements. Typical German efficiency.

I remember reading how early in the war the 2 cm Flak 38 was particularly deadly against slow flying obsolete Allied bombers. Aircraft like the Fairey Battle were easy prey while attempting to bomb German columns. In one account, almost the entire squadron of Battles was wiped out by 20 mm Flak in a raid on a German column in France.

Does anyone know of the effect of frozen barrels on the function of the weapons? The question only occurred to me after seeing the footage of the barrel being changed by the soldier in winter camouflage. Did the barrel diameter shrink or expand after the gun hadn't been fired for hours in freezing conditions? Did it ever become 'brittle'? (Eastern front where minus 40°c temperatures were experienced.) Were the spare barrels kept warm somehow? Did the ammunition expand when frozen? (I live in a warm climate where the temperature rarely falls below 0°c and have no experience of these temperatures.)
@spottydog4477
2 жыл бұрын
They actually use anti freeze liquid. The Norwegians perfected winter warfare which was copied by the Germans and Russian as the war progressed
@AKUJIVALDO
Жыл бұрын
They changed barrels to prevent overheating...nevermind summer or winter. Shells have copper bands which engage rifling so there is no "too small barrel for shell to fit" AKA "shrunk barrel".

The thing that suks about these Videos is the Gun Noise is louder than the Narrator and you cant hear him. To Bad other wise the whole series Rocks
すばらしい!
lovely quad flak,,ever operate it,,,even in call of duty, :-)
"what did he say???" "he said keep firing!"
*When you can't find the fly swatter*
Shooting those guns can make you go deaf! That is probably the idea behind the narration! Huh what's that?
soy el unico que piensa que los alemanes estaban adelantados a su epoca en cuanto artilleria!! increible!!
@Paciat Agreed. The allies didn't need an equal 20mm cannon. They had the superb bofors 40mm which the axis never had any real answer to. The germans had some 40mm bofors cannons, but not enough.

Idiot
Narrator needs to shout above the noise of the guns
@SpenzOT The 20mm was better as it could be belt fed and mounted in a quad. The bofors only had a 5 round mag.
que ARMA HERMOSA ES UNA OBRA D3 ARTE
yeah a range finder. I think they had one that looked like an upright twin tube Periscope about 50cm in a V shape with a 5cm lens facing front at the top of each tube and a viewing port at the bottom facing back or is it the same one with folding arms?
Flackvierling (4x20mm)is phenomenal !!!!!!!

This reminds me of my great uncle who was a Lieutenant in WW2 saying something about, "The Germans used a 20 millimeter cannon on us in the Ardennes."

the flak 38 could penetrate 50mm at 100 metres .

No, the German 20mm cannon using APCR rounds could only penetrate 39mm of armor at 100 meters.
ES UNA MARAVIYA
I gather those guns were loud.
Its so loud I'm getting flash backs .
super waffen kann auch heute benutz werden.
great equipment, good warriors....go...germany....go.....
He said the 20mm flak single barrel and phalanx barrel was no longer deemed reliable towards the end of the war and they instead fielded the single barrel 37mm

That year that no one shouts "Allahu ahkbar!" but only the nice explosion and guns firing! Ratatataat boom!!!
The commentator should have used an interruptor gear for the narration I think.
Manual and coolest
Great info but the narration almost drowned out by all the background soundtrack.
operating those guns are dangerous other than being shot by a plane, because if not careful you get hit on the face with those exiting shells

They actually use anti freeze liquid. The Norwegians perfected winter warfare which was copied by the Germans and Russian as the war progressed

They changed barrels to prevent overheating...nevermind summer or winter. Shells have copper bands which engage rifling so there is no "too small barrel for shell to fit" AKA "shrunk barrel".
Real..👍
