The navy enlisted peacoat may cost $500 because it was so good and can handle any cold temperature

Could you go into a little more detail regarding the construction and composition of the coat? From what I've gathered, the older ones were made of kersey wool fabric whereas the newer ones were made of a wool melton fabric. I'd like to know if these coats were INTERFACED, that is, I want to know if they had a canvas interlining sewn on to the front piece or in the collar, or if fusible material was used. I'd like to make one for myself but it's pretty hard to get 32oz melton. Closest I can get is 18oz.

You can get the 32 oz melton peacoat from cockpit USA. It is made from USA as well.

You can get a 32 oz. Peacoat by Schott of NYC or a 36 oz. Peacoat by Buzz Rickson which includes the original 13 colony stars around the anchor on the buttons, corduroy lined pockets and a throat latch on the collar but your going to pay for the extra details and weight with the Buzz.

@@erock736 don't get me wrong, they look great but I have access to pretty cheap tailoring services. Anyway, I managed to get some 720 gsm pure wool fabric from China (it's really good stuff). About $15 per yard about $22 if you include shipping. Ended up getting a long pea coat (knee length) as well as a long version of the Ww2 US mackinaw overcoat. Managed to get my hands on some brown shearling for the collar. They look dope. I initially used silver fox rabbit fur for the collar of the pea coat, but it ended up looking a bit feminine, so I swapped it out for the mouton.

May i ask a question about functionalty? Why sailors used a coat made of wool doesn'it impregnates with water? How does this kind of jacket perform under the rain?

Wool is essentially water resistant and even when it is saturated with water it retains 40% of its insulating ability. I own this USN peacoat and the type of wool weave make it warm and almost waterproof.
