ART VLOG - Speed drawing landscape & swatching Polychromos pencils

0.00 Intro - 2.15 Speed drawing landscape in fineliner - 6.30 Swatching Polychromos pencil set of 24 - 15.55 Finish (speed) drawing in Polychromos pencils. (Met NL ondertiteling!)
In this art vlog I’m swatching and working with a Polychromos pencil set that is still relatively new to me. I’m working on blue/grey Canson Mi Teintes paper, a favourite of mine, and the subject is a view in the Amsterdam Forest (some live footage of said forest as well!). I hope you enjoy it. Thanks very much in advance for watching!
The materials used for the drawing are:
Canson Mi Teintes paper, sky grey, 160 gsm
Pigma Micron PN fineliner black 0.7 mm
Faber Castell Polychromos pencils
Kneadable eraser + Tombow Mono Zero Fine point eraser
Filming was done on a Samsung Galaxy S10+
Editing was done in iMovie on an iMac
The thumbnail was made with Affinity Designer

Polychromos colors I recommend, for landscape: Skyblue 146 - Permanent Green 266 - Pine Green 267 - Chrome Oxide Green Fiery 276 - Chrome Oxide Green 278 - Chromium Green Opaque 174 - Cobalt Turquoise 153 - Cobalt Green 156 - Juniper Green 165 - Grass Green 166 - Permanent Green Olive 167 - Green Yellowish 168 - Leaf Green 112 - Ivory 103 - Warm and Cold Grey, literally all of them both Warm and Cold, or at least half from both, (especially if you're drawing castles, mountains, winter clouds, anything rock or stone etc.). All Browns as also Bistre, Nougat etc. Payne's Grey 181 - Dark Indigo 157 - Prussian Blue 246 - Fucsia 123 - Blue Violet 137 - Helioblue Reddish 151. There are some more, to complete a landscape palette like Ochre colours as also rose and purples for drawing flowers etc. Paper is a huge factor when it comes to drawing, especially with Colored pencils like Polychromos. Fabriano Artistico for more advanced users that can benefit from layering and Daler Rowney Heavyweight Fine Grain for faster drawings, are the 2 I've found work the best. Hope this helps.

Oh wow, thanks for that list! I'll be sure to look into all those colours. I've already added a few new greens and browns, as well as another warm grey and the ivory. No cold greys as of yet, which from your comment I realise I kind of have to get, as I have just gotten back into drawing architecture... 🤔😊

I like just how calming everything is, very nice and I also liked that the pen does not overpower the colors. In my experience when I use a pen it makes it look 'cartoon-y' so good job on that

Beautiful. I had a set of 12 Polychromos laying around for a long time and tonight I decided to use them in my sketchbook. I was wowed by them in every way and considering getting more colors which brought me to your video. I loved watching you draw with the fineliner. I think I learned a trick or 2. Thanks. All the best to you!

Yes, this worked out surprisingly well. I do think the coloured paper helped a lot though, if I'm honest. And you can't go wrong with watercolour and fineliner, can you? That's also a favourite around here. ☺️

I just found your channel. I loved this in both the fine liner and in colored pencils. I just started drawing about 9 months ago and I don't have the patience for colored pencils. I'm just now trying Pastels and I like them better but I have to say you did a wonderful job on this piece. I just subscribed. Thank you for sharing your work. Makes me want to try harder.

Oh, thank you for your sweet comment! Truth is, I find pastel pencils easier to work with than regular coloured pencils as well, just not on the smaller sizes that I've switched to... That's probably just habit, though, so I might get back to them again in the near future. For now I'm trying to get the hang of these Polychromos pencils, and not always succesfully I'm afraid. (Last video case in point 😄) Thanks so much for subscribing!

Gorgeous! With the detailed pen drawing you made a kind of underpainting, in a sense that this drawing can be regarded as a grayscale grisaille, significantly determining the resulting luminosity of the hues painted onto it. I've learned and applying a very similar concept from the brilliant Steven Reddy.

Great video! Save yourself a lot of money and buy the complete set of Polychromos pencils. Also the exact same color palette as the watercolor pencils, markers etc. Also, Polychromos are best used in multiple light layers as opposed to layers.

Hi @Nicola! The result would have been very different, though. I tried using the black Polychromos pencil as a main drawing pencil this summer, actually. And while I liked working with it, the lines weren't nearly as black as I'd wanted them to be. Personally, I like the way these pencils play of the deep dark fineliner, especially because they are so very vibrant. But to each their own of course. 😊

Hi @Colin Cannings. I get it, I like art vlogs with commentary too. Unfortunately, there are some less fun reasons why I don't speak in my videos... Not something I've talked about before, but some time ago I had some rather serious medical issues which affected my speech. Only very recently my Dutch has become rather good again, but this is very much not the case with my English. It's all those th's and the roundness of the language, I think. So, much as I would like to make chatty vlogs, it just hasn't been doable. I don't address this in my videos because I feel weird talking about it. Even typing this out feels odd, but I'm trying it out for size. If I don't feel comfortable with it after all, I'll delete this reply. I'll see how I feel about it in the coming days. Probably not the response you were expecting or wanting to read, because most people get uncomfortable around medical issues. You're kind of my test-comment/reply, as it were. Hope that's OK. If not, let me know, and I'll delete the comment!
