Art Therapy Exercise - Exploring Emotional Needs

If you've enjoyed my content, please consider donating to my channel: donate.stripe.com/dR69CC5vy9p...
In this video I will show you an art therapy exercise which you can do at home with only crayons and paper. Through drawing and writing, we will explore emotional needs: what they are and how to meet them.
Here are the example questions you can use in the writing exercise:
Part 1
What is your name?
Where have you come from?
Why have you come here?
What have you come to tell me?
Is there anything important I should know about you?
Part 2
What do you need?
What do you want?
What would make you feel happier?
What don’t you want?
Do you feel like you need to give up something to get what you want?
How might you go about meeting that need?
Is there a part of you where this need feels met?

I began dabbling in art therapy at home to manage anxiety and stress. Without books, I just looked for videos to guide me. This is very significant and enlightening. Thank you so much!

Thanks for this exercise, it made me realize that I am actually not doing as good as I thought I was. Literally started bawling my eyes out when I had a conversation with my circle.

Thank you for sharing your resources and knowledge, but what I appreciated the most was that you shared YOUR PERSONAL thoughts, feelings and emotions with us. As horrible as it is looking vulnerable sharing your experiences and emotions , it helps me to realise that most of us, (if not all of us) have a reason to do this type of exercise. I’m really hoping to do your exercises and I am sending you warm love and gratitude.

Thank you so much for sharing your techniques, they are juist exactly what I didn’t know I needed! such an amazing, intuitive way to connect to our subconscious, our emotions and feelings and bypassing the urge to constantly analyse. You are beautiful as well ❤️

that was so powerful!!! The way it was framed just takes your mind out of its usual confines. I am almost seeing some wisdom in my writing that I didn't know I had😂

This was a wonderful and emotional exercise. It felt a little freeing to get some of those negative feelings out and look at them. It was strange at first thinking of how to "talk" to the image, but it quickly felt natural and insightful. Thanks for sharing this.

I want to try some creative things in my therapy and saw this. I tried it now, quite emotional. I may try this tomorrow with one of my clients. Nicely explained, especially as you showed your example. 💚🧡💙

I enjoy layering the new drawing on top of the old one, kind of like rewriting a story. So in this case, I would take the drawing of the bubble and continue that blue over and outside the black line until it looked more like a freeform shape, and really emphasise that bright light in the centre, expand it, even off the edge of the page! Really let myself empower myself to let that part shine as that's what the feeling seems like it wants to do... just another perspective!

I had an unexpected result from this exercise, i even made a surprised snort after understanding what i wrote. I got kinda scolded by my drawing that i'm worrying too much and disturbing my heart (who is also the drawing), and that the heart is a "he", and that he feels quite okay under all the pressure i have in my life right now, because he is made to withstand. I was told that i'm annoying him and should laze around and look at the sceneries. This was kinda funny and weird, but my mood for sure had improved

I appreciate any suggestions!

Hi! I am in my final year of Gad school for my LMHC with a focus in art therapy. Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I am curious about the quotation statement about not focusing on "good quality art". How do you address this as a facilitator when clients hit you with, "I can't do ar,. I am not an artist". That divide between expressive and fine art is chasm for some folks.

Did you intentionally draw the angel on the left of the circle or was it intuitive? Same question for the small boy with the blue cape and the people crowed on the right side of the drawing.

I am still exploring career options, and do want to include creativity and connection with people in whatever path I walk down. :)

Art brings us together too....express yourselves without words and symbolically it will reach us thru colors and shapes and emotional experiences both personal and that that is strange but personal to others....art is so good to unify and appreciate together....especially when you are hurting it's entertainment too just still which gives you more to imagine....God arts in heaven psalm 139 and you are his art too....appreciate your looks and love yourself diversity amongst us is Godly and the image of perfection....We are created in God's image but together all humankind makes us perfect together but problematic when we divide....let us unite not fall by division!!!! The world the earth has tears but are your tears like mine...why do you cry...I cry too...sometimes I swallow my tears but I didn't know you cry too...tell me so I can wipe them if you let me then please wipe mine because since I lost many to death they aren't around to wipe my tears anymore...can you take their place at least right now...I will love you forever! The world's on my shoulders too!!!

I'm sorry I like planning surprise parties! Mosh to live heavy metal ...I hope the owner and employees where inspired and the bar gets wild tonight and everyone gets adrenaline rushed and it's diverse in racial harmony and ages and you all make new friends...social distancing made us all shut INS...I hate it but let's get back to normal and be courageous meet and greet strangers and close loved ones for parties again it will heal your stress and emotions and be a good memories for times you need a lift me up because all is mad or sad or worse...please people stop isolating yourselves from people...COVID isn't worth being scared of because if you don't social isolate you die happy with others near you...if you shun everyone you die alone and broken hearted....I don't have COVID but if I did I'd want others to be there for me in my sickness and in health till death do us part in richer or poorer isn't that what true friends do and good Samaritan strangers...so call me crazy but I like talking to strangers and being personal even at first sight...because it makes it quality time and we bond right away mostly for good but sometimes people hate it but it's cuz their shy and scared of attention I think....introverts so meet an extrovert or introvert but don't die alone in sadness...reach out to a stranger be surprised empathy and sympathy come in those moments...and the friendship lasts that you formed at first sight...so now you know why I'm so famous...no I'm not promoted by someone...I'm just dramatic and outspoken and befriend alot of strangers!!! Of every culture and etc because I believe I want to see the world but how can I if I have one mind it's better to experience a diverse array of people so they explain their world to you and like that you live through them too and truly experience the world because visiting lands isn't seeing the world visiting people is honestly and they are your neighbors your coworkers your boss your pastor or priest or servants at a store you shop at...be surprised how the world can be found right in the city you're in...if you go places you never wanted or thought to...due to stereotypes or someone's else's experience! Go🥳😋😘
