Art therapy: a world beyond creative expression | Carol Hammal | TEDxGUC

Can art be a form of therapy? Could art actually be equivalent to the common pain killers used in the Medical Industry? Shockingly, the answer is yes. Carol Hammal stuns us with how a twist of fate changed her life and introduced her to Art Therapy. After studying in the United States Art Therapy, she decided to head back home and share what it is she had learnt with the community. Her own community. Just like her life has been forever changed, she was hoping she could do the same to ours. Here she is, clarifying how art has the power to improve both our physical and mental well-being. This talk aims to create the first graduate Art Therapy Program. She also highlights one of her patient's journey through therapy. This talk provides awareness for this exceptional phenomenon to emerge. Pain and suffering does indeed vary; coming in all kinds. Perhaps art could be the remedy? Let us find out!
Art psychotherapist, musician, visual artist, Carol Hammal, graduated from the American University in Cairo '07 with a BA (Hon's) in Art. She then pursued a Master's degree in Art Therapy at the Hahnemann program at Drexel University in Philadelphia in 2009. She returned to Egypt after completing her master's coursework in 2011. Hammal is a member of the American Art Therapy Association and she attends its yearly conference at the USA, while providing talks about the clinical progress of Art Therapy in Egypt. She joined the Serenity Psychology Center in Maadi, and is currently an Art Therapy consultant at Egypt's renowned Behman hospital, closely working within its impatient addiction unit.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Oui, L'ART EST UNE FORME DE THÉRAPIE !!

Giving a TED talk is difficult! I should know! I found this talk interesting because the speaker presented a US-centric view of the field which proposes certain people are the founders of art therapy. That is really not exactly true because art therapy sprouted from so many people throughout the world. In fact, the UK and Australia have distinct histories and other regions of the world knew of the healing capacities of various art processes too, framing their "professional" identities in different ways.

cathy malchiodi , hello . i think the american intellect needs it more than us . let them have it , they won`t won`t know how to use it properly , just as all these conscious , enlightened , experts that are everywhere . common sense is enough for me , with regards

This is so phenomenal, I never knew about this particular form of art, or even how great of a purpose it would have in my life since. I was incarcerated in 2017, in Hennepin county jail, and this group of kind women would volunteer their time to offer Christian services. The idea of the combination of bible verses and creative expression especially in county jail was unimaginable to me, until it wasn't. Art therapy saved my life!

As a plein air artist I thank you. QUESTION: Do you FILM your clients for analysis as they create their art? Does the process of HOW they create art reveal as much as WHAT they create?

so many strangely irrelivant comments. This was an interesting intro into art therapy and art as therapy, I wish she went a bit more in depth with that. She sounded a tad nervous but did well.

Interesting topic but far to bad sound that cuts in a wierd way (thesimpleartofhealing) is better at articulating what i feel abut it. To bad that sound removes so much value of a... what should be, amazing talk.

I am in agreement with you Cathy Malchiodi and have had to stop listening at 8:31 because the definition of art psychotherapy is actually the opposite of the art therapy goal of being non-verbal means of expression and bypasses trauma of having to analyse and verbalize the process / art result. While it may be offered to some to express themselves verbally, it is not essential, but relies upon the astute nature of perception and directives of the art therapist.

Art therapy is great (I do art and go to an art therapy group) but (unlike my mental health team) PLEASE first ensure the 'patient' has a decent safe home to live in, enough income to live on and has access to (and means to pay if required) local and good doctors, dentist, optician etc. for physical ailments and appropriate social care/help if necessary. And NEVER experiment on patients and NEVER make them/us do role-play/theatre etc. if we don't want to. Oh and retraumatising and repeating traumas on purpose ('exposure therapy') of course is inhumane and cruel. Thank you.

Interesting topic. Carol is very difficult to hear and pay attention too between muffle sounds and putting the emphasis and pauses at the wrong times and nervous jitters! Unfortunately I only got 5 min in! Went to a more 'comfortable' vid. Sorry.
