Two cinematic exhibits have come to the Boca Raton Museum of Art located at Mizner Park in Boca Raton, Florida! Art of the Hollywood Backdrop: Cinema's Creative Legacy & Bonnie Lautenberg: Art Meets Hollywood.
Join me as I take you on an exclusive guided Media Preview Tour of "Art of the Hollywood Backdrop: Cinema's Creative Legacy" with co-curators Thomas A. Walsh and Karen L. Maness. These are the actual gigantic matte paintings that were used in such movies as Alfred Hitchcock's "North by Northwest," "The Sound of Music," "Singin' in the Rain," "Ben Hur," "North to Alaska," "Tip on a Dead Jockey," "Two Weeks in Another Town," "Week-End at the Waldorf," "Young Bess," "National Velvet," and "Marie Antoinette." This was the visual effect used to simulate backgrounds before techniques such as green screening ever existed! The scenic artists who worked on these never received any screen credit. Most of these iconic pieces on display come from MGM. Not too many backdrops still exist as many were destroyed or just flat out painted over as was the case with "The Wizard of Oz."
Afterwards, we venture upstairs to get a bird's eye view of the "North by Northwest" Mount Rushmore backdrop and to also check out the second cinematic exhibit at the museum, "Bonnie Lautenberg: Art Meets Hollywood." The artist pairs photographs of iconic works of visual art from legendary artists with stills from Hollywood films released that same year. Some of the films include, "Psycho," "Harry Potter," "E.T.," and "The Graduate."
