The name "Alessio Bax" is familiar to me since a longer time through recordings, but I "met" him and Lucille in the #musicneversleepsNYC livestream last year. But I had no idea that Alessio wanted to start out as an organist! Marcel Dupre had a (Cavaille-Coll) organ and a piano in his house, so the idea to write duets for both instruments was right there. As for organ studies, having a solid piano foundation is important, especially for romantic literature; and starting age for organ studies ideally is at age 14-16 because the body has to be developed due to the pedal work. That is a great start of the new season to have them on- and the captions are a GREAT idea! Thanks!

Thanks Tiffany , this chat reminds me of my two music teachers at uni who at the end of term and performance time , produced a duet for single piano . I was in awe yet confused about it's nessesity as i think i have been ever since , regarding duets and two pianos four hands , performances . Brings into perspective the other advent of even more pianos on a stage , but happy to now know more about the ins and outs of " just two " . I'm guessing there's such a thing as a " piano circuses " no matter how much spin maybe generated bye the genre of music played , on more than two pianos ! . it seems obvious that two remains outside the realm of " circus " just as any duet is , even when in conjunction with an organisations/festival or circus . Fascinating to get this inside perspective on the realities of two people living within that , yet still completely individual as both , one and two .

What a fun, informative, and interesting podcast, Tiffany. It was very interesting to listen to all three of you distinguished musicians and your stories. I enjoyed hearing Alessio Bax's experience with the organ. His love of the French organ tradition and their fame with improvisation connected with me as I am an organist. I am certainly not on par with the great French titulaires like Olivier Latry or Daniel Roth, but I love playing French Romantic organ compositions. Anyway, I love to play the piano as well, though I tend to only play it to accompany special music in church services or warming up a choir in the choir room before a service. I am going to listen to these podcasts regularly. Great job and a wonderful idea. As to the question, "What does it take to play four-hands duo beautifully?" Certainly a lot of talent, but more than just that. You must have a connection with each other, and while retaining your own perspective, being able to express and explore the theme of the music. I think it gives each performer the chance to really create meaning and voice to the space between the notes as well. Playing as a duo is not simply just being able to perform accurately multiple lines of music and hit more notes, but rather to broaden the voice and message of the music, while adding extra layers of color and interpretation to the themes. You have created a wonderful platform for discussion, learning, sharing, and promoting classical music.

Synchronizing movements to each other by nonverbal communication is so impressive, I would really like to see their electroencephalogram when playing... Thank you for the interview, I hope that you'll still have some free time left with the recording and editing effort increased on two channels at the same time...

Loved this interview and intelligent conversation between 3 of my favorite pianists, always liked Ms Chung and Alessios playing here on Paisiello Tango kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYCixtd-Y7rUYaw.html Addendum, on great coincidence that came to light in interview, Alessio played great as a substitute for Leif Ove Andsnes according to NYT, sure Tiffany enjoyed it alot. Thanks for this enlightening conversation.
