I’m struggling to get started. I need more collage pieces so I’ve been painting patterns on paper. I’m the lady with the broken foot getting around on my non motorized scooter. I need at least one hand to steer. I want so badly to create and I’m not going to be able to wait until I’m up and running. Saw my doc and he said 4 more weeks but probably much longer. Oh well, life’s challenges. We all have them. Thank you Jackie for being here.❤

I absolutely love this! Who ever thought that watching someone paint could be so exciting. I have recently started to go back to collages and paintings that I thought were finished, adding more paint, paper and marks. It's so much fun! Watching you is inspiring. I love what you create!

I appreciate you being so honest! Sometimes, when I get stuck, I just want to give up and tell everyone I can't paint anymore. I lost my "mojo", I'm a fraud, a rank amateur, etc. Ha ha! It's not true, but it certainly feels that way, sometimes. 😅

I absolutely love these. Those colours are awesome together. I love watching and seeing how the art grows and grows. It's a bit like a flower. It starts with a shoot and bit of green but then after some growth the bud starts to form and then the flower gradually emerges. I loved the reveal of the edge tape being removed. It's amazing what a difference it makes. As I was watching this video I thinking about my approach and thoughts about that first layer being covered. I suppose if there are any collage pieces you really like, just don't use them as base layers, add them later. I have learnt to listen to the art and not my head. When my head thinks it knows better my art piece usually veers off course. It's hard to explain but the art tells me what it wants to be. Your videos really excite me to create. 💜💜💜

Love your work. I also use a limited color palette- and I think many of the same colors. But I also have very limited space. So I tend to do one or the other: paint or collage. Or draw - with pencil, pen & ink. Currently my daily practice is collage. Which sometimes means days of making collage papers. On those days I often do monotypes. I too remind myself “it’s only paint” or “it’s only paper”. I find that many a painting or drawing that doesn’t quite make it becomes excellent collage material. Thank you for sharing your work!

Very late to this video but it is helpful. Yes I always struggle, mainly with this embedded or even conditioned thing that there has to be a preconceived ‘picture’ as a start point. So I really value what I am leaning from you about spontaneity and the destruction of the preconceptions is also part of the process. I also have a sort of rush to completion thing, I swear this comes from art education! It is a big conundrum for me because I am now in later years and realise that I need to escape from a lot of the things I never really thought much about before because I found and still find I am not that interested in the thought out stuff. I really like your pages especially, once you detaped them. Watching your process was good too. I think I will tape something saying ‘It’s just paint’ somewhere to remind me!

Yes - keep the “it’s just paint” sign in front of your eyes! ❤️❤️❤️ I can relate to a lot of what you’re describing - it’s hard to break out of our old patterns and beliefs - even if they’re no longer helpful ❤️ I used to feel that everyone else around me had to agree that a painting was complete before I would let it be done. I wanted others to approve my finish line 😆 I’ve spent more than a few years trying to be perfect and never make mistakes or (GASP!) ugly art! I found that making process art (focusing on the process of art making instead of the final result) has freed me up to PLAY with my art and reconnect with my inner voice. Win-win! I’m offering a free online workshop April 1st explaining the process I use. If you’re interested, you can sign up here: www.jackieschomburg.com/workshops Here are a few videos I’ve done about this process too: kzread.info/head/PLtHg87r0ga-8a7haPI5RMNCIKPne4H1ob ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you! This was so interesting and enlightening. I am struggling with abstract, which is the type of art I want to be able to do. My media of choice are watercolor, pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, crayon….just about anything that isn’t oil, acrylic or gouache. My biggest stumbling block is composition. I can see it in others work but not in my own. I get lost. Very frustrating. So it was helpful to see you continuing to play around until you reached a point where you were pleased with the composition. I was shocked that it took weeks! I guess I need to develop patience!

Hi Jackie, such great videos! Thank you. I have so many questions but I guess basically I get stuck as soon as I find something I like. I typically use a rich color pallet because I live in Mexico and color use is more vibrant here. Always when I go,for the “white or neutral part” I get stuck on how to mix it. I guess I should use all the colors in the painting then tint it with white until I’m happy? It happens every time. Here is an example of one I’m working on. I’m thinking of going right to collage now but would love your thoughts. Guess I can’t include an attachment sorry.

Hi Shellie! First of all, you don’t have to have a white/neutral part of your paintings if you don’t want them - honor your style ❤️ If, however, you WANT to add areas of white/neutral colors, I’d be happy to help. If you’re willing to email me a photo of what you’re explaining below I’d be happy to offer any suggestions I have ❤️ You can email me at Jackie dot schomburg at gmail dot com

Love your vids. Just discovered them! I find gloss medium enhances colours. Matt just gives a dullness. However i have just discovered that gloss makes it difficult to mark make over the top which is a blow sincce this is a tool i often use. So now i plan to stick with matt and mark and then top coat with gloss. Of course these comments might just relate to the brand of mediums i use! Thanks again for your work in making these vids. It is much appreciated. Best R

Interesting observation about the difference between the two finishes. What do you like to use for mark making? I often use caran d’ache crayons and I don’t remember a difference between gloss and matte but I also haven’t used matte lately so it’s entirely possible that I’ve just gotten used to it 😂 Thanks so much for the comment and I’m glad you’ve found your way here! ❤️

Gloss medium sometimes doesn’t provide enuf grip for grungy rendering on top. A regular binder or gesso is better. Depending on the collage substrate, a glue stick sometimes works well becos it is less wet and doesn’t buckle. And that I often finish with a sealant varnish, there is no lifting of collage pieces.

Am new to the idea of layers so struggle with painting something only to bury it again and not knowing whether I will see anything evolve. Enjoyed your gentle explanations and will look for you again. Thank you 🤔

It take a lot of practice in letting go to paint over existing layers - I'm still practicing! It's definitely challenging to cover over something. I find that if I know a painting isn't finished and I'm not willing to paint over it, it just sits unfinished for years. So I'm finally painting over older unfinished work to resolve it and it's been successful. Plus, if I paint over it and it looks terrible, it's MUCH easier to paint over something I don't like, so it still works out well in the end :) You'll get there when you're ready - no need to rush it. Just keep painting and it will work itself out!

Love this! And I'm a newby so stupid questions ahead. This was a lot of effort. What do you do with these pages when done? Also, do you use the same methods on canvas?

Hi Andrea! It was many steps but I don’t remember it feeling effortful. it took time, but I was experimenting and playing around as I made each new layer and shape so it felt fun 🤗 I do use the same methods on canvas - some of the marks end up looking differently on canvas due to the different texture but the same actions can be used on both canvas and paper. I have the painting on the KZread thumbnail framed on my wall at the moment - both paintings were at my local art league in an abstract-art show early this summer. I’m happy with how these two turned out so I kept them. Other times I’ll use less successful paintings for collage paper or cut them into smaller paintings and add on to them. I’ve also put many pages together and bound them into an art journal. No worries about stupid questions - The best way to learn is to ask questions to the people who know the answers you are looking for. You’re doing exactly the right thing - welcome ❤️

Hi there! Tha k you for your video. At the end you mentioned that sometimes you get to a point where you think the painting is beautiful so you don't want to keep going... what are you trying to achieve? I thought it was to get to a point where you like it. So, how would you know if you are finished? Thank you for your time on this.

Often times there is something that I really like about a painting, but it doesn’t feel resolved overall. Those are the times that feel tricky to me because it’s a risk to continue, knowing that you might have to cover over the part you love to ensure that the entire painting feels resolved/complete. However, if you DON’T take the risk, the painting remains unresolved indefinitely, so in order to ever finish it, the risk has to be taken…. It’s a practice of making brave choices. For me it took a lot of practice to keep going ❤️

I’ve had consistent luck with 3M’s Delicate Surface tape (Scotch 2080EL-24E ScotchBlue Delicate Surfaces Painters Tape, 0.94" Width x 60 yd, Purple a.co/d/3XioBSR) but I do find the light purple color a bit distracting as it’s very hard to ignore. I’ve been forgoing tape for the past few months and just paint to the edges 🤗

This is a great question. Are you interested in abstract art? I'f so, I'd play around with a large piece of paper. Tape it so that it is separated into 6 or 8 parts of approx. the same size and paint and draw over it with big, loose strokes. Try to pretend it's not taped off. Once you have several colors and/or types of materials (crayon, paint, graphite, pastels, etc.), pull off the tape and cut along the tape lines so that you now have 6-8 semi-randomly marked paintings to react to. This helps keep me loose and it takes some pressure off of trying to create interesting marks - they just happen. You can see me do this in a few videos, including these: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d6NrrZtxqc6wd8o.htmlsi=8LvVn0MEC_v6dEsj kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqyTwdinqtqumrA.htmlsi=B106rJiFazASsbRw kzread.info/dash/bejne/mq6jlbagfLytZ6g.htmlsi=3VV27IaM9MJ2WB3s kzread.info/dash/bejne/qoaivKerY66Yh6g.htmlsi=WyQ0ZfwS0RXcGeaH Hope that helps!

I don’t know that any tape is “bad” but washi tape shouldn’t be too sticky, which I think would be easy to peel off paper with out harming it. You really can’t tell with tape until you try it. Use a hair dryer to heat up the glue before gently pulling the tape off and you should be okay either way!

It’s a tricky thing, isn’t it? I’m learning that the more art I make, the more I trust myself. And the more I trust myself, the less I listen to other people’s opinions about my art. I feel like the more I pay attention to what I’m doing (and less attention on others), the more confidence I find. What helps you when you’re feeling low on confidence?
