Art Donovan on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, April 12, 1990
I was sure someone would have uploaded this by now, but it looks like no one has yet.
Art had been on Dave's Late Night ten times before his first Tonight Show appearance in January 1990, so the TS bookers decided to get on the bandwagon.
This was Art's second guest appearance on Johnny, and it was notable at the time for certain words that the censors evidently allowed to slip through.

One of the most naturally and genuinely funny and entertaining people.
Loved that guy. So many great stories told only the way he could.
100% comedy. No politics. We miss you Johnny!
Art is so naturally funny and charismatic - just imagine if he had writers and an agent-he could have been big in entertainment. As it stands, he was one of the best talk show guests ever.
WWF fans know this man well from King of the Ring 1994: "Hey, how much does this guy weigh?"
This clip disappeared from KZread, and I've been looking for it for a long time. Thank you for uploading this!!!!

Thanks for this! I had completely forgotten about Art Donavan, but he was one of my favorite guests back in the day.

@@dongiller Good to know. I'll be checking it out.
I miss Art. I’d watch his show in Baltimore/DC and he’d always get in trouble for cussing!
Man, I am from Baltimore, those were the days.
What a treasure Art was, lol
So this was off-air? Holy shit! 🙂 Geez, he was funny. Served 4 years in the USMC in the Pacific Theater, WW2.

He was Marine in Ww2 Luzon and Iwo Jima.
Mighty good 👍😊.
4:34 It sounds like they may have edited “Jesus!” into “Geez!” by dubbing in laughter over the second syllable, which makes the lack of bleeping for the other words even stranger.

Doubt they’d go to so much trouble. It sounds like Art caught himself and only said “Geez.”
Salami, bologna and hot sauce? Sounds good if you add mayo. Thanks, Don!

In his book Fatso, he said he would fill the hotel bathtub with ice and beer. 🍻😊
Thanks for sharing this. How did the censors miss those?

The censors likely didn't miss it. "The Tonight Show" taped from 5:30 to 6:30 pm in Burbank--9:30 pm in the Eastern time zone. So if any editing had to be done, they had two hours to do it before the show went on the air. And in those days, editing was still a very slow, time-consuming process. So it was more of a matter of the editing team looking at the clock and saying "the hell with it" and just airing the show as-is in the Eastern time zone. (11:30 pm is part of what the FCC declares "safe haven time" and they actually don't enforce any restrictions at that hour; any bleeping or censoring at that time of night on network television is just done as a courtesy to the sponsors, more than anything.)
Hey Don, you know how Dave was a big Reds fan, right? Do you know when he talked about thier old anmouncer Joe Nuxhall who would sign off by saying "this is the Old Lefthander rounding third and heading for home" I know i heard Dave say that before and im wondering if he referenced it multiple times or if i just happened to see it the one time Could have been Clooney or Sarah Jessica Parker since they are both from the Cincinnati area

I found one show when he used that line - at the end of October 12, 1994: “So until tomorrow night, from Riverfront Stadium and this is the old lefthander rounding third and heading home for now. Good night, everybody!” Nice catch. :)
