I acknowledged my problem last year and with the information from this video it lies within planification stage! It was to do with drawing my characters, I didn't spend alot of time (if any) gathering references, I just jumped right into it expecting myself to be able draw them exactly how I saw them in my head (because I felt like I've drawn enough to at least get a decent result, (even though I haven't drawn them prior)), which always ended up with extremely poor results which then lead to me developing a fear of drawing them, so I just stopped drawing all together 😅 I've known the problem, but thanks to you, I now know what caused it and what I need to do to fix it!

Also, to anyone going through a phase where you absolutely despise your art, this can actually be a good sign of improvement. This shows that you've gotten to a point where you can see the issues in your drawings and you now how the ability to focus on what your struggling with. Notice how a lot of bad artists can't tell their bad? That's because they lack the knowledge of what certain things should look like. Dont be afraid of making a bad drawing, dont crumble it up and throw it out. Keep them so you can look back at what you did wrong. I've been going through this phase for about two years now, and I've learned so much from it. Take this also as a challenge to improve your confidence learn to be happy with the mistakes.

I took some notes 1. Preparation * Project/art planning. Building context on what to make * Gather reference, etc * Limit yourself, set boundaries so there isn’t choice paralysis. * Make sure your plan is doable with current skills. 2. Incubation * Let it sit in the back of your mind. Let your subconscious handle it. * Disconnect for a while. * Avoid distraction. * Start another project 3. Illumination * Getting flashes of ideas for your project * Aha moment * Consume a bunch of art to fuel creativity and ideas 4. Verification * Executing your idea, seeing if it works out. * Make sure its 70% easy, 30% hard. * Don’t rush. Time constraint = creativity killer.

So my tip is: I get artblock if I’m sad. If I see something that puts me in a bad mood I get artblock and can’t draw. My advice is don’t force yourself to draw, the artblock will grow stronger. Another tip (not really artblock related): experiment ALL 👏🏽 THE 👏🏽 TIME! Try other artstyles, brushes, techniques, little hacks and giblets. Try them out! It’s how I improve in art, and it may help u. The downside is that ur artsyle won’t be consistent, but that’s honestly fine. U don’t need to focus on ur artsyle, it’ll happen in the end don’t force it

It's so hard not to force yourself to draw when you have an art block 😭 I usually try to draw everyday and if I dont I feel bad abt it. Maybe that's why I have it all the time. I think maybe taking a break for a while is better since you aren't failing again and again. Also, you will start to miss drawing so that could also inspire you to draw again.

For me, I've always found taking long walks while listening to music helps get my imagination going, art block or not. It's like a weird car battery charged by driving to me. I would decide on something to work on and kinda sift through ideas in my mind as I walk around busy streets, malls, neighbourhoods, etc. Then I'll keep mental notes for when I get the chance to sketch it out.

I’m still wondering why he left in the first place… Was there like a falling out over creative differences, or did he leave on more peaceful terms simply because a contract or project ended? He seems to use the line as a matter of pride, so I’d like to think it wasn’t anything bad.

I actually had an art block last year and I found it helpful to just, stop digital painting for a while, sit in a cafeteria and just draw whatever without caring for making flaws. Perfectionism have always been a big bitch for me (still is). Nowadays I have a lot of breaks and I try to mostly ignore how many likes I get on social media. If I happen to check, I won't take much out of it and try not to return to it too often.

Whenever I'm stuck in an art rut, I need to take a step back from the frustration. Do something else. Then the next day I start over but very softly. Eventually it builds up day by day and I get back on track again. I keep multiple projects ongoing. It's nice to have always something to return to. I found your tips very helpful and it inspired me to now cook myself a nutritious meal so I have energy for drawing later. Thanks, I love your videos! And the drawing is outstanding.

Just got out of an art block❤️ and boi i can tell you guys it was a hard fight...The fear of not knowing what is gonna happen to you as an artist in the near future is what keeps dragging me down. So what i did was i wrote every idea that comes into my brain as many as i could while i watch some anime and read mangas and i used those ideas to formulate a new story and suddenly Idk my dumbass inspiration pops up again, also when you're brainstorming for a new idea, i always listen to different music depending on the genre of my idea. If this method worked for me it might somehow help you too brother😄😄😄😄

One thing that helped a lot for me is having a sketchpad/notepad to write down or even better draw ideas as they come to you throughout the day. So when you sit down to draw you have a pool of ideas to choose from. I've noticed that it's easier to come up with ideas when you don't have to paint them immediately. This also helps you feel more like a creative person because you always have a bunch of ideas going on whereas if you sit down in front of a blank canvas and try to come up with ideas it's much harder and you will hate yourself.

I feel like the constant art blocks ended the moment I started studying with mentors and following daily schedules. So rather than being blocked, I was lacking focus and discipline, developed it, and now I see myself drawing everyday, even if the only thing I did were an hour painting study and 30min figure drawings. (just this week through, the heatwave in my country hit me hard)

Perfect breakdown! It's counter-intuitive to what most teach, but stepping away from the canvas and taking a break is always the right thing to do. When your eye and mind is fresh, you don't just see the mistakes you made clearer - you also find better solutions for the issues you can now see. Though, what I love the most about these kinds of videos from you is that they apply to life in general. What you outline here applies to pretty much any kind of creative process that requires non-linear problem solving, and it's something everyone would benefit from learning. Everybody's rushing without thinking in our modern times, and taking some time to consider what we're really doing is beneficial for us all.

Thnx for uploading a great video again! I'm actually a mural artist, but I often find your videos to be helpful because there's a lot of basic art knowledge involved as well. I'm definetely the type of person who tends to skips the second phase and goes looking at inspiring images straigth away (to get the illumination phase going) after the basic plan is out there. I have this file on my computer full of random art that I found really cool to have my imagination growing, but I'm going to try out doing something totally unrelated first next time. It's often that that's where cool ideas are coming from, so I'm glad you sort of opened my eyes here ;)

Words like balance, visualize, process, trust, and fun help me to get started or breakthrough my art block moments. If I keep my mind focused on less words, it helps me to connect to the action of creating easier. Usually, once I get started on a warm up sketch, I’m ready to do art work within minutes and forget that I escaped art block. Awesome video :) lots of really insightful and useful tips here! I think the incubation part is so essential, it's so important to be excited about what we're creating - that excitement carries through in every brush stroke and right into the imagination of the viewer :D My personal treatment for art block is eating small amounts of psychedelics with a great deal of intention (examining sadness, awareness of needed improvements, why relationships are important, stuff like that), and go exploring the forest, forget that I am an artist, turn into a tree, get tired, turn back into a human, play my favorite music on the way back, write down all my ideas, take action notes, decide on ONE THING I can do right in that moment, do a handstand while the inspiration boils and bubbles over the edges and let it spill onto the digital canvas!

Thanks for this video Marc! I've been stuck brainstorming a story and chsrscters for the longest time now, but artistically it's been way too frustrating attempting to draw things on my own, knowing my computer is too distracting to reliably collect reference.

Thank you for the video Marc! When I get an art block, I use this time learn new things, or study more anatomy. It almost feels like I’ve unlocked new abilities which I feel happy to apply into my art.

something that helped me a lot is just doing studies when my creativity is having a break. This way I'm learning but I have no need to be creative. I feel like those phases always come and go so to switch between creative and study phase works very well for me :) Also, of course, doing studies can be really inspiring and cause the spark that's needed to start being creative again!

Man it sucks hearing "dont set yourself up for failure during the planning stage" because wanting to draw anything period feels like setting myself up for failure ...if that makes sense

When I experience art block, like I am right now (so thank you so much for this video!) I normally resort to drawing my comfort characters or the one oc that I've drawn the most throughout my life, it helps a lot because my muscles remember perfectly how to make that character look good, and so my self condifence increases. It's like a little reminder to myself of the things I'm capable of doing.

hm, i had a mini art block/lazy moment, didn't feel like studying, didn't feel like starting a new piece. i still forced myself to do art, just did some rectangles and w/e . then I started drawing something, wasn't working so i decided to remove the "something" and just let myself make what i felt like, what my eyes and hand felt like making, with no planification. this made me discover my new style and gave me a new love for art. now I'm using some planification with it, and it's going even better~ Randomness with some guidance. it feels like a great balance for me.
