Loved your video last month about how importing design applications from drawing into your painting practice and how that has lended you some additional vitality there. I wonder if you've ever inverted this formula? That is, making drawing more painterly. I don't fully know what that would look like, maybe drybrush with graphite or charcoal powder. Or maybe even putting mineral spirits to the

"Dont draw what you see, draw what you have seen." Anybody know what this means exactly? Im guessing he is saying, instead of staring and drawing, look/analyze then draw the ref from memory. Im not sure though.

Jung gi always reiterates analysing the things you draw and building your visual library Basic shapes, forms, etc. Especially. Building a database of objects and things you have seen in this manner is especially important in drawing the way he does. Analysing the basic forms of the object helps you break it down in a way that you can draw it not just from the angle or perspective you see it from currently, but also from your imagination, by orienting the object differently. Analysing in this way also helps you to draw other similar objects. For example, jung gi talks about how he learnt to draw motorcycles by learning to draw bicycles first, or tigers by learning to draw cats first. When you're finally seeing an object similar to one you've already broken down and studied before, it makes the process of drawing and thus comprehending and adding it to your visual library much easier. Hope this helps

In a lot interviews he says that he replicates 60-70% of the things he saw. Even for him it is not possible to replicate from memory too 100%. So his quote is probably try to remember + give it your own taste.

@@vishnu2407 Thank you for taking the time to answer. It helps a lot. Walking through the process of improvement, maybe it would be something like this: -1. Studying/practicing basic shapes and shape manipulation, turning forms at will while respecting perspective. -2. Using that knowledge to see these simplified shapes in what we choose to study. Basically using shape language to study say the human form. Through the analysis, we will find many overlapping similarities between various objects and living things. -3. Take it slow and analyze first. Test knowledge by rotating object in our imagination and putting it to paper. (I remember Jung Gi in another video saying something like, "If you can draw it from any angle then you know you understand it fully".) Possibly similar to how we need to know the alphabet before we can make words, or needing to know numbers before doing math? Iv been trying to create a clear outlook on how I spend my time practicing, while also being able to spot mistakes and correct as I go.

@@DosenbrotWTF That makes sense. Readability and filling in the gaps adds to the person`s style/taste. I sometimes get too hung up on getting things 100%. Thanks
