i guess a mixture of Slave Labour and Robotic Labour can work well... Humans for the Mines, minimal investment in safety, food and environment, you have plenty of them, and can bread always more... Robots to show Control... the problem i see is who is doing maintenance on the Robots, surely not the Slaves... did not work with "Chicago Police"... do not know what the "needles" Aliens Eat, but i doubt Human Flesh is an universal food source... I see more a problem in economics here... Invest in a oppression of a whole Planet inhabited with "primitives" but counting billions... move a few thousand unwanted troublemakers offworld would not make a dent if done for hundred years... and then you have troublemakers in all your mines elsewhere... all in all i guess the "needles" would have made more Profit to catch the humankind by greed at all give them breadcrumbs, their equivalent of Pearls and shiny things and get motivated but free working forces in the mines...but then there would be no movie, correct, not a great movie like this underrated gem...

How else to better approach a planet without raising any particular extraterrestrial defense systems than to disguise your ship to look like ordinary space debris? Probably works pretty well for ambushing interstellar travelers not to mention, disappear from pursuers in any given situation. I doubt many radar/laser systems see very well through rocky ship shells.

Of course aliens would place giant Transformer like robots to keep humans in check... Is like actual humans travelling to the past and going to the Roman Empire era to keep them in check surrounding Rome with Napoleonic era cannons and muskets.

I never really get these alien invasion to take Earth's resources / enslave humanity type stories. They fall down on basic logic. 1) Why take Earth's resources? An interstellar civilisation can get all the resources they need in space. There would be no point of putting in the effort of invasion. 2) Why enslave humanity? An interstellar civilisation could just get machines to do the work for them. There would be no point of putting in the effort of invasion. It was a fun movie but kind of stupid.

    3) In the end of these types of films, the humans always win. Despite the film making it very clear that the aliens are MASSIVELY superior to humanity in every possible way. That's what's most stupid about all of these alien invasion films. In real life, humanity wouldn't stand a chance.
