Adams and Renner are astonishingly good in this wonderful movie, but I was particularly pleased to see Forest Whitaker back on the big screen - it felt like agaes since I'd last seen him in a major role.

My favorite movie about alien "invasion". They are not monsters, they are what aliens, developed enough to travel stars, should be - incredibly intelligent and civilized.

Yea because when dealing with an advanced race you have to be careful what words you show them because they probably have no way to see or hear anything else on the planet.

SPOILER: Well, if you actually watched the movie and payed attention, you will understand that the aliens did this on purpose, cause what they really wanted was giving their "weapon", their language to humans from earth so they could see time as they do, and help them in the future. And what would be the best way to do so, than teching each other their respectives languages ?

  • @BigKandRtv

@@jockastafernandesabbade You've explained the alien's motivation, but not the complete failure of the humans to recognize and then question the lack of native language skills. Again, it would be our nature to be suspicious of the visit. And we certainly would have been more suspicious if there was not even a buenos dias level attempt after days of being on Earth.

"Climate" can figuratively mean other things, like the state of mind or moral atmosphere of a collective. I thought it was a pretty accurate "weather report", with the "comet" representing multiple problems and crises we were already experiencing while they were filming. The critics didn't get the deeper meaning for some reason. For me, it hit way too close to home.

This movie should have been called Mumbles with Aliens. She mumbled so much of her dialogue that in the cinema I could barely hear a single word that she said. How the aliens ever managed to understand her I have no idea!

I hear ya. Amy Adams is such a ... god-awful actress. She's like an older, red-head version of Kristen Stewart. Has like only "one mode." She was the same way in the Superman movies. Just insufferable acting on her part.

Akshually.........that more advanced race never attempted to wipe out the Aborigines. There were conflicts where both sides killed each other, but a clear winner in the end. There's four times as many Aborigines now as there ever were. Many white settlements were wiped out to the last man, woman and child, for example the Cullin-la-ringo massacre, known historically as the Wills tragedy. The Aborigines ate a great number of people in Far North Quensland, enjoying doing snatch-and-grabs on people travelling bush tracks. They weren't equal oppourtunity cannibals either, they preferred Chinese miners because of their rice diet, but white people and their own kind were more common and thus the staple diet. But people assume that Noble Savage Aborigines dindu nuffin and any pushback they recieved from settlers was because "Whypipo Bad (TM)" And the story that "Kangaroo" means "I don't know" is merely a fun urban myth. The word kangaroo derives from the Guugu Yimithirr word "gangurru", referring to eastern grey kangaroos. None of the pop psychology or pop history peddled in this movie should be taken seriously.

@@wombatusmaximus1788 Your description of the very advanced Aztec and Inca empires (architecture, agriculture - and sewage), the lasting Maya culture, and many other peoples through a very large continent, who had complex languages and diverse cultures as "stone-age savages that ate each other en masse" shows you haven't ever read anything about them. It's very easy to claim superiority when you start from ignorance. And yes, the very Christian and civilized Europeans almost wiped out (and in many cases, they *did* wiped out) entire groups of human beings in unspeakably cruel ways. Having weapons able to kill more people more efficiently is not a signal of any kind of superiority.

@@emaarredondo-librarian this conversation is not about Aztec or Maya. It's about Australian Aborigines. Having weapons able to kill more people more efficiently is definitely a signal of of superiority because they are a manifestation of wider advances in technology in a civilisation overall. The Aztec and Maya were more than happy to use their superior tech against neighboring tribes to gain prisoners to sacrifice to their Sun God by tearing out their still-beating hearts

Yes, it is good movie. There are some lapses in logic, but it probably helps the story line. Think about more realistic scenario: aliens contact us and they already know everything about us and can speak all our languages freely thru real time translation. If we have google translate or ChatGPT, they have fully developed highly intelligent AI on board that can crack any language barrier within seconds.
