ARRI Unit Bag Medium 2 - Honest 6 Month Review

Фильм және анимация

The ARRI Unit Bag Medium II is a comparatively expensive camera bag with some unique features. Whether these features make sense in reality and whether they are practicable can only be found out in a more long-term real world test.

Now that's a review I can get behind. So few seem to notice these little details about the strap handles and closures. You pay the premium price for the premium name because you expect those things to be better.

I thought this is a great Assistant Bag, but your video made left me confused wether this is the right one. The question is what are the better options?

If the zipper doesn't bother you and the small pockets are large enough for your needs, then the Unit bag will serve you well. If you have the opportunity to visit a specialty store to physically inspect and try out various models, that's what I would recommend most. Check the size of the compartments in relation to what you intend to use them for and examine all zippers and closure mechanics in general. And if possible, try to approach the matter with an open mind, without believing that certain brands are better than others - in the end, it's not about the name on it, but whether it suits your requirements.

Thanks for your review, but I think your disappointment can be explained by the fact this is not a camera bag. Arri describe it with this quote « Our unit bags offer a rugged solution for organizing and transporting camera gear and accessories. » I think it’s good AC bag but not a good camera bag.

I understand what you mean, but I'd like to propose the bold claim that even for a first AC, dealing with the zipper and Velcro situation can be quite annoying. The size of the pockets might be a matter of personal preference, but for a first AC, I can imagine that having a few divided medium-sized pockets would be desirable. In the next review of this kind, I will make an effort to communicate more clearly what is likely specific to me and what could potentially be a general issue. What would you say is the decisive difference between a camera bag and a First AC bag?

@@deadendboredom Well, many of the issues you're pointing out still apply but yeah, a first AC gear isn't exactly the same as a camera bag. As a an AC you will store your wireless focus unit (Hi5/Wcu4/Preston), matte box and a few filters (like a polaframe), one or two spares batteries for camera and focus unit maybe your 7inch monitor if you're on the move to another set and handles for shoulder rig. The small pouches will probably be dedicated to spare cables (BNC, Lbus, etc...) and you might put a camera media but the 2nd AC or data manager will usually take care of that. You can also put extra accessories like a pan bar zoom control or the viewfinder when camera goes on Steadicam or Crane. So you would mainly put small to medium accessories in this bag. And rarely move with the bag on your back (but yeah it all depends on the type of production). The main idea here is that you have a cart with all necessary stuff for the day and the bag is on set to bring a few things closer and gain extra seconds instead of having to run back and forth to your camera cart.
