ARRI Interview: The immersive camera movement of “1917”

Фильм және анимация

Roger Deakins CBE, ASC, BSC, his wife James Deakins, and TRINITY operator Charlie Rizek discuss how they used ARRI ALEXA Mini LF, ARRI Signature Prime lenses, and TRINITY stabilization to achieve the real-time camerawork of Sam Mendes’ technically audacious war film “1917.”

Fun fact: Roger met his wife on the set of "Thunderheart" (1992) where he was DP and she a script and continuity supervisor. Over the years they've collaborated on such films as, "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994), "Kundun" (1997), "The Siege" (1998), "Prisoners" (2013), "Sicario" (2015), etc. On "1917" she functioned as a digital workflow consultant.

Yeah, I saw the movie and was like, "Holy crap! BEAUTIFUL video images, ALL IN ONE SHOT!" I kept watching for the breaks, "where will they cut so that they can move the camera in position?" The color grading was fantastic as well! And my dream camera, the ARRI Alexa, made that possible, due to its color sensitivity optimized for a more natural look. I would've loved to be involved in producing this film! And one note: the camera they talk about isn't exactly a tiny camera. My DSLR is small. A Canon C200 is small. The Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro (2nd gen) is small. The ARRI Alexa is definitely big. But yes, it's also smaller than other ARRI Alexa's and other cine cameras, but it's still big and requires a hefty steadicam rig to hold it.
