Why? That kind of thing happens quite literally with nearly everything. Heck, I can build a PC with 12yr old parts that will kick the ass of nearly everything you can buy now, it will do everything faster and better. It just would have a very high original price tag.

I didn't even need labels on the images, I could tell straight away. It actually surprised me, since these days most cameras are pretty good - but damn, that alexa footage. How did they do it? It feels less contrasty, but somehow not flat. It transforms poor light into good light. It feels smooth but not unsharp. Like the transformation from highlight to low light just smooths out and is so delicious. I always felt the alexa image had a bit of a green/warm tint, but it's a nice tint and skin tones somehow transcends the tint and just always looks good.

It's the Doug dolly which is a rip off of the Dana Dolly. A used Dana is probably the way to go. Both systems require a mini combo stand or sometimes specifically called slider stands. It's pretty much my go to thing for camera movement. You can also just place them on a set of apple boxes.

Maybe I'll do a more in-depth comparison with the C70. I really do like what the C70 produces. To me Canon is right up there with ARRI and RED in terms of color science. The C70 sensor doesn't have the color depth that RED or ARRI sensors have though and the dynamic range is not quite there either.

All in all outside of Arri perfected color science and Red High Resolution in terms of DR cano right on par. @@KamalJones CineD showed the Komodo to have 12.5 stops of usable dynamic range and the C70 in RAW to have 12.3 stops. So about the same. Compared to the Alexa which has 14. The total patch range is much higher of course. The Komodo does a sort of in camera highlight recover for the last stop though and it doesn't retain color information. The C500 MK2 in 10 bit got a score of 13.1 stops. Which is definitely close to an Alexa. That rating might drop with RAW if there is any sort of camera noise reduction happening in standard 10 bit. I do think the C500 and C70 are great options and certainly much more affordable if you want something that does high resolution. I have highly considered the C500 mk2 especially with their awesome financing options.

@@renaissancedigital5730 vey true, Cine D also noted that c70 produces 12.8 stops of DR when shooting XF-AVC 2 highest score for super 35mm to Alexa Classic. With c70 being cheaper and 4K 120 with no crop and face detection 🤷🏽‍♂️ In terms of C500 you are corrects it’s 13.1 but still 2nd of all time. IMO the C70 is best value camera out but when comparing the c500 to heavy weights like monstro, LF and etc it’s the best value on market 6k full frame Raw at 12bit internal while also allowing me to rock out with 3 cinema lenses 24, 50, 85 because at button push I can switch to super 35mm mode and extend my primes. The vraptor XL is basically a red c500 you charge more for what c500 already had 10 stops ND, face tracking and more only this I wish c500 had which I rarely use is 4K 120fps You should definitely test out c500 against all other camera and you will never look back and financing is clutch

@@KamalJones The C500 is definitely nice. The C70 is cool but that extra dynamic range is from noise reduction, which doesn't count IMO. Almost any camera will get an extra .5 stop boost if you apply some NR. The raptor is nice because you get way more HFR options and it is actually recording 16 bit RAW vs 12 bit. It's probably partially why Canon doesn't get any love at the cinema. I really don't like RED as a brand though. So for me its ARRI or Canon. It is hard to go anywhere else after owning an Alexa tbh. The C500 does get a lot of love in the realm of work I do around here. It definitely would be way easier to handle on run and gun sets vs the Alexa or almost anything else tbh. Internal NDs are lovely. Currently I get paid more owning an Alexa, but a C500 would not lose me gigs. A RED Komodo probably would lose me the gigs I was getting with the Alexa. The Raptor is good enough but its also a lot more than a C500 and no financing options. I also dislike RED as a I mentioned previously lol.

Well, like we used to do with film stock, you should use ages old techniques like: ND gel on windows and fill lights : grab a few stops here, drop a few stops there, and I assure you you would not see the difference with an Alexa ! :) People need to learn how to do proper cinematography, beyond pointing and shooting, to lessen the burden on sensors. We got such excellent technology today, we act as if it was flawless. Never forget, digital is not film. It's easier to handle, but when it looks like sh!t, it REALLY does.

Thanks so much for this. I am really enjoying your no autocue style and take on things. Maybe I am missing something though but I don’t see a title overlay saying which camera is which? Meanwhile I have the Komodo simply because when i stacked up the practical specs rf mount and r3d it seemed the best choice at the time. Not least youtubers who I thought would know, and were familiar with dsmc2 and arri as users, and so maybe at a similar level to me were changing to Komodo as their owner op camera of choice. That said I am so unsure about the picture and not sure why it sometimes leaves me cold other times not. Seems like I am trying to fall in love with it and there’s a nagging doubt that this isn’t really good enough as an A cam, which in fact maybe obvious. I think Alexa cameras speak for themselves and if it weren’t for the practicalities involved the classic would be nice to have but it’s a beast. Regardless I would love to have a high level discussion at some point about the look of all these cameras and I think you touched on it when you mentioned roll off. There’s something else going on too and I think the Alexa 35 is the first camera to directly address this in terms of the “look” or tuning of the digital sensor. Meanwhile thanks for doing what your doing. Take care.

I should have labeled for all. For the Komodo vs Alexa the ARRI dynamic range test the ARRI is on the left. For the Epic dragon vs Arri dynamic range test the ARRI is on the right. For the short film test the RED is the close up of the girl looking past the guy's head. I think any camera can leave you cold at times. I have definately got shots with the Alexa that left me disappointed. But at some point what you have in front of the camera is more important than the quality of color and pixels that the device is capturing. I think ARRI is a good mix of very accurate colors while also putting an emphasis on skintones. Canon tries to do this but doesn't quite do it as well IMO, but they are probably my second favorite. I think a hair over 6 stops of highlight detail just makes for a really beautiful image. I am glad you enjoyed the test though. I am trying to make more Alexa related content soon and maybe more with the Komodo too.

@@renaissancedigital5730 hey thanks so much for your reply. I hear you. I guess I remember a Hollywood dp talking about how he could shoot into the shadows with an Alexa lf and not worry. For me that’s the test. Does the saturation and colour fidelity hold up in the shadows. Given how pulled down the image is in post having that low end latitude makes it almost idiot proof. That’s what’s so good about a camera like that. When I have used Alexas I just point and shoot and as you saying I just have to think about what’s in the frame. The picture just takes care of itself. Using Canon C300ii or iii for feature docs is likewise very point and shoot. Maybe I just don’t trust the Komodo yet when it’s under and it definitely likes light. I don’t know if you’re have tried the Juan melara Komodo to arri conversation LUTs in your test but with some adjustment they can make a big difference. Dude I could go on. Just don’t get out enough and too many cameras. Thanks for the relaxed and knowing vibe and for talking about the joy of cameras rather than selling tat with affiliate links.

The old Alexa does make beautiful images, but it has some key real world limitations that led many users - myself included - to sell our Alexas and move to REDs. There are three main concerns for lots of uses. Biggest by far, the Alexa weighs a ton - yes it is designed to sit on your shoulder perfectly, but it is a beast to try and hold and exhausting after a few minutes, which also means bigger tripod legs and heads, and practically eliminates all but the largest motion devices. Second is power usage, the Alexa eats batteries alive so you need a live switching brick battery unit and two bricks (even more weight), or a big power block, or accept short takes and carrying a bag of batteries with you. Third problem area, the Alexa is a two person camera to operate well, the camera operator side has nothing other than the eyepiece (which is exceptional by the way), all of the other information that you need to operate it is via the screen and buttons on the other side of the camera, albeit with some functions available through eyepiece buttons. Flying solo is very messy. You could argue that this is just the way we have always worked in film - short takes, many media and battery changes, lots of assistants... but today's directors and clients want speed and flexibility, with smaller and smaller crews, and the Alexa (even with the Leitax adapter that allows you to use small non-PL lenses) just doesn't work this way. On the other hand, as someone who makes their living as a Film Colorist, I can make a 2k Alexa RAW image look as good or better than a 6k RED RAW image, with greater perceived depth, a more lifelike filmic character, and a wider range to push the codec, in half the time - unless it needs to be zoomed in on! Of course, a bigger Alexa image from a more recent camera wipes the floor with anything in terms of useable beautiful images...

It's hard to argue with RED for run and gun. The price/size/image are just at a good place. I choose to have a difficult life and shoot ARRI. I'll probably get the mini next year which will solve most of my problems. I am shooting a 50-60 minute film in October on the Classic so we shall see how it goes. I just can't get away from the beautiful image. I'll probably be making a follow up video soon on my further experience with the camera. The only other camera I am considering is the Venice, but even that is lacking IMO.

@Straight Outta Camera I don't know if you were replying to me or Chris but I'll give my thoughts anyways. The mini is 1/3rd the weight so its a much more manageable package. Although it is still power hungry and not exactly super light weight compared to DSLRs. Which lets be honest nowadays you can get away with just shooting with a hybrid photo/video camera for a lot of work. I tend to bring a lot of equipment to the point where the camera is not the heaviest or most cumbersome thing. Grip equipment, lighting, c-stands, combo stands, big panels end up being the worst of it. I just did a gig with the Classic. Simple interview and B-roll. It is hard to argue with how nice the image looks. The clients love it too. I have another such gig next week and I think I will use the Sigma FP instead and see how it goes.

I kind of thought it might be even better than it is. But it has increased highlight retention which is incredible considering Alexa cameras already have the best highlight retention. Of course you can change the way RED distributes highlights by raising the ISO. But still at "base" ARRI just has a great upper and lower latitude distribution that looks great when you expose for middle grey and throw on the ARRI 709 lut. But in regards to the Alexa 35, it is the best capture device on the market at least if color is your main concern. It handles highly saturated colors across the board better than any other sensor from what I have gathered. The in camera looks are interesting. It is going in a different direction than what I have seen in the industry which is usually hugely dependent on post production tinkering. I hope it takes off. I personally like to do everything in camera and on set. My hope is Alexa mini and amira prices start to go down a lot and I will be able to buy one within the year haha.

@RenaissanceDigital to fix your over heating issue do your back shade/Senor Calibration in the heat of the sun. Put lens on that your going to use stop down all the way then lens cap or matte box with filters and a flag then some duv just to be safe leave out for like 20 to calibrate your and your good. You wont have a over heating issue overheat. Another cheat code If you need off speed is the old dragons don't have multi black shades per calibration like DSMC2-3. If you do the list of above but for your SLOMO or High speed setting your using that day you can just use that as you only calibration for day unless you have time to do it properly. But this needs to be simular settings like only a frame rate change once you change more then three setting T/E will not both be green. I have shot in the Arizona sun at like 112F. Yes this was demonstrated when I pulled down the highlights in resolve using the RAW tab. At the end of the day you can't pull back information that isn't there. You can underexpose to maintain highlights of course but you will get more noise. Now I don't mind noise for my style of shooting and I don't even care about clipped highlights most of the time. The Komodo is an excellent choice. I do dislike RED as a company though, they are just annoying. I am keeping my Alexa as the people I work with usually prefer ARRI. I don't use gimbals or drones. There are two third party Canon EF mount options for the classic, one of which I own. What would be nicer is an E or RF mount as there are a lot more lens choices including cheap anamorphic in the mirrorless mounts. That won't happen though. I am working on developing a focal reducer for the Alexa Classic for EF and PL. The "large format look" is always in demand these days.

It definitely can. I've used a Pocket 4k as a B-cam. As long as you aren't torture testing the dynamic range you'll be fine. The only thing is mixed lighting, hard to match any camera in those conditions. I think that daylight situation was tricky due to the nature of natural light. There was a lot of different color casts going on from colors of different things in the room being bounced around. If you are using more artificial light, such as a really strong light source as your key, pushing right at the subject, it would match better I am sure. If you were to downsample the Raptor to 2k it would probably come really close to the Classic's dynamic range, surpassing it if you count the highlight reconstruction happening in camera. But in terms of big productions the Komodo isn't getting much if any use as an A-cam. But the same can be said for the Alexa Classic. Both still capable cameras though.

You might have messed up when it comes to this video. Especially the highlight retention part. Red like Blackmagic cameras have system where the middle grey shifts depending on your ISO. Lower ISOs cause the middle grey to shit up giving you less stops in highlights and more in the shadows. Higher ISOs do the opposite. The ARRI has 7 below and above middle gray in its native ISO so it's much harder to notice the difference. You could get the to almost match and the red to not lose saturation in the highlights. When it comes to digital video cameras, you really need to understand the technology behind the scenes in order to fully utilise the sensors capabilities. Hope you can take my advice and have better results next time

The RED Komodo just has less dynamic range than the Alexa Classic or any Alexa. If you shoot 1600 iso on the Komodo you'll still have less highlight retention than the Alexa and you'll also now have noisier shadows because the Komodo isn't really cleaner than the Alexa at 1600. The Raptor XL is 1-2 stops cleaner than the Alexa in the Shadows so with that sensor you'd definitely want to shoot 1600+ for higher dynamic range scenes. The 7 over and 7 under claim with the Alexa is definitely not true in practice. At 800 iso it clips at 6 stops over and I'd not push it past 2 stops under. I'd probably rate the Alexa Classic at 200 ISO if I was trying to get an even over/under balance.

Also... Try rigging an Alexa on a gimbal, or a copter, or even a small moco set-up. Good luck with that. And... Try finding a good Canon mount for an Arri....

i was used to an s1h with a ninja v and was really impressed. then i got a komodo and was blown away but dont think its the same as a a7s or gh5 or some. you need to invest in some light and train yourself in simple lighting. if you do this the komodo is the best bang for a buck camera on the market in my opinion and you can do everything with it.

@@PARISONFIRE I believe RED measures the entire patch range which on the Komodo is close to 16 stops. ARRI usually goes by what they consider usable dynamic range which is usually a few stops under the patch range. I do agree with you that the Komodo is a very capable camera. I think something like the Pocket 6k is a better value, but it does have a pretty slow rolling shutter where the Komodo is global shutter. The komodo is also the only global shutter camera on the market which is pretty cool. I also love RF mount.

You never NEED autofocus. Really tired of hearing that you do. I got to shoot with a Sony FX9 + all the Gmaster glass that is supposed to be the best AF around and I was still steady pulling my own focus because AF is unreliable.

No offense but I've never seen anyone manage to make these two badas cameras look so bad. I shot an entire horror feature film on Komodo for 15k. It won several awards and made back 100k. And everyone says it looks a million bucks. All regular inexpensive lights and natural lighting, standard lenses. My point is, the gear isn't enough to make great content. What matters the most is how you utilize it. Otherwise, you can own the best camera in the world and it doesn't matter. Itis gonna look like utter crap.
