Master Claudio Arrau played from his soul through his hands. Technique is one important thing for sure, but to play with inner passion is something else, and very touching indeed.

Esta es una joya de material de archivo!!

Arrau, unos de los mas grandes interpretes de piano del siglo 20, sino el más grande, dejó un legado de cómo se interpreta la música como su autor la creó. Él cuando interpretaba se transportaba para ejecutar lo más exacto posible lo que el escritor quiso dejar impreso. Hay muchos muy buenos pianistas, pero difícilmente existe uno que transmita lo que el maestro Claudio Arrau transmitía.

this is one of my favorites here on youtube because he is very expressive. also many continue to articulate the grace notes in the allegro incorrectly for the period. i think it's important even for a sonata to be quite expressive because I imagine Mozart had a lot of expression in this piece .It was one of few minor piano sonatas.

Siento, hermano, que lo tuyo es mero nacionalismo, un veneno inoculado a la humanidad, como tantos otros que nadie parece percibir, a fin de programarla en el distanciamiento, la diferenciación, el separativismo, la competencia... Puras veleidades del Ego esclavizado... En fin: soy argentino, y creo que de ese mal ningún otro pueblo como el mío sufre peores y más estúpidas consecuencias... Arrau vale lo que vale, y valdrá siempre, no por ser chileno sino por ser UNIVERSAL... Nadie puede conferirnos dignidad ni (auto)rrealización... Un abrazo sincero.

The passage from 16:42 - 17:17 is really one of the most challenging parts of this sonata. This is the moment when all the pain bursts out. How to carry this significant meaning with the repeated notes and base chords is very difficult. Comparatively, the fast passage at the 1st and 3rd movement is even easier to handle.

Regardless of how faulty his playing in this video, I still regard him as one of my favorite pianists. Come on guys, he was a human, an artist, not a robot. Go to any live concert and you'll find pianists who make a few slips here and there, no matter how famous they are. Not being note perfect doesn't necessarily make that person a bad pianist.

+Kevin Chow Plus it's really easy to make a few mistakes when you're playing Mozart. Mozart is very difficult and stringent; especially when compared to romantic era composers like Liszt and Chopin. I've known many a good pianist who had perfected their fantasie impromptu and laid even the infamous La Campanella to waste but were brought to their knees by the fast-paced systematic fuckery that is W.A Mozart.

+emimm Plus Arrau is great Beethoven interpreter, but you can get away with a lot of mistakes playing Beethoven - e.g. 4th movement of Hammerklavier. As Mitsuko Ushida has said, it's a completely different mindset to play the two composers. (She opted for Mozart)

This is not an easy sonata to play, with the same level of difficulty as a much longer Beethoven sonata. At the age of 61, Maestro Arrau was at his peak! Those who are unfamiliar with his technique may think it all looks very laboured. Twenty years after this televised concert, at the age of 81, he could still breeze through the Appassionata, for example. If you think Mozart's music is all charm and little else, then he is set on proving you wrong. This is a tragic sonata, where the first and last movement are restless and disturbing. The kernel (the soft and all important centre) of the sonata is the long slow movement. The music and its interpretation are fantastic beyond words. Here, you can see Arrau suddenly relax to play the melodic line. For professional pianists, this is the hardest movement to play. A poor performance can be like watching paint dry. Here, every second counts as the music shifts from highly lyrical to highly dramatic and painful. Mozart's music can be appreciated at many different levels. This sonata is a rare glimpse into the depths of his despair; one of the few times when he drops his mask and lays bare his soul.

Mozart its so difficult, because the minimun error you wrong! And the public is heart you every moment, its evident a random error, and respect about the interpretation, you need a good soul! Arrau was a good piano master!

Esta es una de las sonatas que considero como una de las mas dificiles de Mozart. Realmente tiene muchas cosas complejas...muchas cosas incomodas y sobre todo es muy dificil encontrar un "tempo" adecuado ya que muchas veces depende del piano en donde es ejecutado, teniendo que cambiar el tempo a ultimo momento cuando nos encontramos con el instrumento a utilizar. Aveces pienso que esta al nivel de una de las grandes Sonata de Beethoven en dificultad, y siempre enmascarado con el disfraz "gentil" que Mozart cubre a sus obras haciendolas parecer "Faciles". Se necesita un mecanismo muy acerado y una comprension de la obra Mozartiana . Sin duda una obra Maravillosa! y a pesar de su dificultad, aliento a todo aquel que quiera enfrentarse a ella estudiandola! seran las mejores horas frente al instrumento que tendran en mucho tiempo! .Saludos desde Argentina!

Arrau did not pay too much attention to mistakes. He was focus on keeping music fluid thanks to his great technique that allow him to eliminate any obstacles between brain and fingers. He was asking about our Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli recitals: was it perfect, as usual? has this a "real" - main - value?

Ik ken een opname van Arrau waar hij het Konzertstück van Weber speelt. Een prachtig stuk wat hij daar op die LP speelt en wat een diepgang weet hij daar te realiseren. Arrau is een schitterend pianist en hoort zeker bij de grootmeesters. Liefde en toewijding stijlbesef en gedoceerde romantiek hoor ik. Mozart is altijd veradelijk moeilijk. het tweede deel daar moet je echt een moedig man voor zijn om dat op je repertoire te nemen. het zit vol valkuilen.

Dinu Lipatti's rendering of this same Sonata from his last recital- ( Besancon- 1950- 16 Septembre) is magnificent- and worth listening to ( a totally different interpretation )

technically, it's *extremely* demanding. This is actually true for many other instruments, like violin. There is a heifetz quote about how mozart composed the most difficult pieces.

This is one of the best performances ever, his style and grace and understanding of power in the song are superb. Pure craftsmanship!!

some previous comments were about the mistake on the 3.16, and there was one comment saying that it was a SHAME for a pianist to comment. my opinion is that we can never reach his artistic level even we could play the notes perfectly. how can we estimate how shameful this can be?

Top level pianists know every details about the piece with decades long time. They just don`t care what other people say. It is so stupid that people think they know more and experience more than those pianists.

I can’t understand people who notice wrong notes in a performance that is so good. Arrau was a very great artist. Who cares if he hits a wrong note occasionally? It merely proves he’s human.

This interpretation of this composition of Mozart of Claudio Arrau (not unlike many of his collegues) is the result of the evolution of the piano playing since the days of the composer.

why only this sonata? I think that's the story with every single piece in existence. It's only once we start trying it out that we notice all the details we just skipped over while listening.

Can you play this Sonata, one of Mozart's more difficult Piano Sonatas, with absolutely no mistakes? Let alone at age 61? All pianists make them. The reason that you only hear them in live performances is because they can't re-record over them. Watch Horowitz live at the White House, 1971. Tons of errors. Barenboim in Berlin, Beethoven Sonatas. Errors as well. Technique isn't everything, but I'm sure you will prove us wrong when you release your perfect recordings of the Mozart sonatas. Right?

Me parece, eso sí, que Arrau interpreta a Mozar de una forma demasiado romántica... quizás anacrónica (muy adelantada) a la época de Mozart, pero Arrau sabía perfectamente lo que interpretaba, los pormenores de la música y de sus compositores. Como sea, la sonata es muy bella y la interpretación de Arrau también :) . ¡Sólo espero que nos regales tu interpretación en vídeo, aquí en KZread! je je

That's right man, I'm with you, besides, that guy doest know whats hes talking about, what he calls "errors" are actually how the piece is written in the best version, I played this sonata at the music uni, and they have this version, they are not actually semiquavers like most of pianist play, Arrau just played exactly right. The one think I didnt like is that he doest play one legato there, but im sure he has a good reason to. :D
