Around the Fur: Chino's Favorite
Музыка
If Saturday Night Wrist and self-titled found the band in dire straits and Adrenaline found them too fresh-faced and nervous, Around the Fur struck the balance between the intrigue of what the band had perfected and what they could achieve.
We'll explore the history behind the album and why Chino Moreno cites this album as his favorite.

Thanks for the credit for using footage from the Deftones ATF EPK I directed. Seriously though, it was pretty cool to see stuff I did back in 1997 being used in videos that fans are now making about Deftones as they have been able to transcend & related to each new generation of kids when they pick the music they enjoy as they grow into adults. Deftones latest release "Ohms" is probably some of the best written material from start to finish the guys have ever released. They are nominated for 3 Grammy's during this weekends award show. Respect, Russ Busby

@@NocturneMusic I might release a song or two from the infamous Viper Room show I shot on Sept 28 1997. I just found the original video tape & re-digitized it yesterday. If I can only find my footage I shot at the Santa Barbara show when Snot opened up for them.... The video of when chino flips forward into the crowd & the view is from like the soundboard & all you can see is Chino's shoes/feet & legs.... that shot is from the Santa Barbara show.

@@cpnstbn1266 fr man and I find myself changing my pick for favorite song all the time lol every track is just that good
I loved Adrenaline, and remember awaiting this album. I was not disappointed. It's still one of my favorites. I did vocals for numerous bands, and 'My Own Summer' is the only cover of any band I ever played live. I saw them twice on this tour. The first show was all of their heavier songs, and the second they played all of their more chill songs to that date. Incredible shows.
I’ll never forget the day I discovered this album. It was 1999 and I was at a skate park and my friend had this album in a CD player and as soon as I heard the two note drum intro from Abe on My Own Summer followed by the unforgettable riff that still slaps so hard to this day I was immediately hooked. All these years later you can take completely different sounding songs like the heaviness of My Own Summer, Korea, Rickets, Headup & Bloody Cape & the dream-like beauty of Digital Bath, Hole In The Earth, Beware & Cherry Waves and you can still tell it’s the Deftones. A completely unique sounding band that was totally different and more interesting sounding than anyone else in the nu-metal scene back in the day…I never thought they were nu-metal anyway, they were so much more than that
My friends introduced me to the music of Deftones in 95 when I was first getting into rock. They would play Bored in the car and I didn't like or understand it. Like you said about Mascara, I thought Chino sounded whiny. About two years later, I was 15 and we visited a friend. We stayed up all night smoking pot in his room and he played the Around The Fur album from beginning to end over and over and over nonstop. By the end of the night I was convinced they were an amazing band. Then after White Pony they became by far my favorite musical act of all time and still are to this day all these years later.
I personally love the cover, it's trashy but timeless and it's very powerful and candid. I get how it could be seen as something negative or intrusive but... Thats fine? It works really well and is not only inviting but kinda repulsive in how intense it sort of is. I love it, I think it's one of the best album covers ever in service of it's music inside. If the cover was boring or something else, the music would still be good but overall the package with all of it together is entirely human and brutally emotional.

White Pony is the album I would take with me into the abyss. R.I.P. Dana.
finally i can understand the story behind the tracks of the album, seriously my favorite records by them, after SNW!
I can never pick my absolute favorite Deftones album, it always shifts between ATF and White Pony. When i finally saw them live for the first time this year, the songs that got me most pumped up were from ATF and as they surprised me playing the title track, i lost it. I have probably never headbanged harder in my life.
im a huge deftones fan myself and i gotta say i just ADORE your content, and your vocabulary! the descriptors you used for around the fur and it's story are great, for lack of a better word! i love hearing about deftones lore and even if ive read my fair share of interviews, fan stories and so on, i still learn something new about the band in your videos!! youre a very underrated channel in my opinion, and i love the topics you make videos on.

I have listened to Deftones since I was 12 years old, always loved them. Especially Around The Fur.. I thought I was weird for being such a fanboy, but seeing all the comments here, and the video of course, I find it f*cking awesome that so many share my enthusiasm! \m/
well done video, you pointed out a few things on the timeline to making the record that while I was aware of them, never thought about them as integral events to the finished product. While "White Pony" was their height (at least in terms of success), this was probably them at their most confident and assured.
Perfect video! My fav concert of all-time will be when Deftones played Around the Fur front to back in Quebec ❤
So wild that Mr Moreno's fave deftones songs are mine too. Also I always loved that he is a huge depeche mode and smiths fan it rocks

Great video, this album is fcking otherworldly Well, all their albums feel like that, but this one especially It's a perfectly crafted atmosphere that manages to be alienating, comforting, fun, and scary all at once I always need to be in a certain mood before I listen to this because it really does feel like a movie almost, in the way it consumes everything around you while you are engaging with it The cover art does a great job of portraying the atmosphere of the album. And of course, the My Own Summer video is also a stellar visual, but I'm glad they chose that photo specifically even if it isn't the most appealing to the eyes

Deftones lore
I was at the concert that resulted in the deftones type o conflict. I remember Chino saying if they want to be Jerks let's show them what we can do. This was after their music was turned off mid song. Everyone rushed the stage and as the curtains were closing there were concert goers hanging off of them and security was throwing people off stage. I looked at my buddy and said let's get out of here. This things over.
...And what do I get?...
ADRENALINE, when?
They haven’t made an album that good since. If it’s his favorite he should go back and take a good long listen and get back to that
@Sergio-nb4hj

They just changed genres. And as much as I personally prefer nu metal to alternative metal, I can understand why he wouldn't want to go back. The world is different now, and the context their music exists in is too different from how it was back then. Even bands like Korn who are still doing straight up nu metal have a clearly different tone to them nowadays. That first wave of nu metal, for better or worse, was a product of its time. Luckily there is a new wave out now though, but of course nothing really captures the spirit of early Deftones specifically

That's absolute BULLSHIT. I guarantee that is not Chino Moreno favorite album they ever did! This album was far from the style that Chino even wanted to continue on with, which is a big reason why their sound is no longer on that level of hardcore genre style. With that being said however.....it is certainly one of my favorites, and still to this day is prob an album I still love to listen to on occasion. He didn't want to put nu metal elements into White Pony, yeah, but that's because it was intended to depart from that sound. It's just artistic vision. If I make a art rock album, I'm not going to add disco basslines to make it dancier... y'know? He didn't want to rap. He didn't want that to be their direction going forward, he wanted to explore their other influences instead. He also just wasn't as angry anymore. More depressive, but not angrier...
