The song is from the perspective of a grieving mother who's son left for the army because he didn't know what else to do with his life, which is a position most young men in the military find themselves in. 4 is a standard number of uniformed pallbearers, so she's referencing the 4 uniforms carrying her son's coffin - the lines about lost futures are all the things she wished for him and never got to see, ultimately making her question her own motherhood. This song is a major part of why I decided not to join the army. That, and a number of former-service friends who were handed the shit end of the stick.
