Arizona's Best Motorcycle Ride: The Devil's Highway (Route 191) to Pie Town, New Mexico

#MotorcycleTrip #HarleyDavidson #WomenWhoRide
Arizona is full of great motorcycle rides, but one of the best-kept secrets in the state is also one of the curviest, least traveled federal highways in the country: The Devil’s Highway. Featuring over 400 curves in 123 miles, US Route 191 (aka, the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway) is a thrilling ride for an experienced rider. This ride’s been on my bucket list for years, so I decided to couple it with a bucket list destination: Pie Town, New Mexico. You already know what we're eating today...PIE!

Thank you so much for highlighting Arizona in a very fun video. I just wanted to share with you that I rode to Douglas Az and picked up US 191 spur that begins at the International Border and rode it north to the routes end at the International Border with Canada in Morgan MT and crossed into Saskatchewan at Monchy.

I knew nothing of this road until I drove it as part of an off the cuff Ironbutt ride the end of the first week in November. I drove south thru Arizona's High Country and Grand Canyon just ahead of a winter storm two days before. I headed east to the state line and then turned north to go back to Durango, CO. My friend to whom I was staying informed me that the winter storm was moving into their area and that I might need to get a room in Farmington, NM because the pass into Durango might be icy. Neither one of us knew anything about this road and assumed it was similar to the parallel road in NM we drove a few days earlier. The sun had already set when I got to Clayton. My GPS had gone crazy as I drove through the copper mine. Apparently they moved the road. Shortly after that I entered the Apache National Forest and immediately started my assent into total darkness. I have auxiliary flood lights and accent lights on my bike so I could see the road pretty good. After a few curves I saw what I though was a single snowflake. A quick check of the bikes thermometer showed it to be in the mid 40's and the road was dry. I reasoned that the flake had to have been blown off one of the surrounding mountain tops. As I continued up the grade, the snow got heaver. I checked and the temp was still in the 40's. I passed a SUV going in the other direction. I got around to the other side of the ridge and now I knew it was snowing because the snow was coming from my right and the mountain was to my left. The temp had dropped to the low 40's. 43 if I remember correctly. I finally started to descend and the temp was 39. After a short decent the road started going up hill again. I went up and up and the snow started to stick to the pine needles that had blown onto the road surface. It was still above freezing. I the road started to descend again. It was now 30 degrees. The snow started to stick. I had slowed to where the engine was barely pulling me forward in 1st gear. Even at that speed I had to dodge animals running across the road in front of me. The temp was in the mid 20's and unbelievably the road once again started to ascend. Another vehicle passed me going the other direction. I stayed in the powder snow and continued my trek up this road. I reached a spot in the road where it looked like several vehicles had turned around and traveled in the same directions as I was traveling. The bad news was that they messed up the powder snow and ice had formed where their tire tracks were. I switch my travels to the edge of the road where their tracks weren't. I had to stop and duck walk my bike across the icy center a few times to stay in the powder. My front tire eventually locked up with ice and down I went. I was able to call 911 and a passerby helped me pick my bike up and put it on it's kickstand. I got it started but it didn't go anywhere because the front wheel was frozen. I took the front part of the front fender off and removed the ice but as I was looking to take the rear part of the front fender I could feel the heat coming off the radiator so I wrapped my rain gear around the front of the bike and it took about an hour for the ice to melt. By this time the local Sheriff Deputy arrived on scene it was down to 8F. He escorted me up and over the summit which was over 91K feet to Hannagan Meadow Lodge. What a nice place. I stayed there until the road was cleared of ice and drove on to Durango. A few day later, I drove US 191 again on my way home. If you decide to travel this road make sure you are topped off because there isn't any services.

US 191 is probably the greatest motorcycle road that nobody knows about. I think we saw 6 cars the entire ride....and a cow in the road....and some elk crossing the road. We rode SB to Morenci. When I was done, I was just exhausted from all the shifts. But it was totally worth it. I had a smile stuck on my face.

I just did Devils Highway 4 weeks ago and was not that impressed. I’ve been wanting to do it for the last 40 year and finally did the loop in one day, Phx, Sanford, Eager, Payson and back home. 542 mile loop. The road is rough and torn up pretty bad. The run from Morenci to Hannigan Meadow is 2 hrs of under 25mph. After Hannigan Meadow the road gets really smooth and more high speed bends and corner. 30-40 min of 50-60mph is really nice. If you really want a nice road to take in AZ, take 89 into Prescott or 89a into Jerome. Much nicer roads.

I saw 2 Mexican Wolves that crossed the road right in front of me about 7 miles north of the mine, what a road in the rain! Just beautiful. Amazing video greatly appreciate your work. Ride on! 👊🏍️

Awesome ride!! Yes, I would ride 500 miles for pie, especially a pie that looks as good as that one!! I've been up to Morenci mine a few times, work related, but never had the pleasure of going there on my bike. I hope to do that now that I'm retired and have the time. I agree that roads can be very intense and certainly require due diligence while riding!

You did have pie at the original pie place in Pie Town. The original is called the Pie-O-Neer just 1/4 mile east of where you stopped. Which I think is a good thing. Every time I pass through Pie Town I stop for pie. Last year I stopped in and the pie was not very good, this year the pie was a little better but every time I stop they do not have apple pie. The Pie-O-Neer changed hands a few years ago and since then the pies have taken a step down in quality. Thanks for the video.

In fact one of the guys who worked there was inspired by our group and bikes. ( Sun valley motorcycle riders). He quit the job up there. Bought a bike and rides with us. Food was just above average. Very rustic though.

My Brother, me and like 6 other friends we ride that highway. From El Paso texas to Springerville AZ we spend the night there. The next day we rode from Springerville back to El Paso via devil's highway. Right before the morency mines my brother went down a cliff, luckily he jumped out of the bike and was able to grab himself from some branches and not slide all the way down the cliff. Thank God he was ok. If anyone it's going to do that ride highly recommend to go at the speed posted on the signs. Not for the unexpireance riders!! Be safe and keep enjoying the American roads.

Love the 191! Ridden it several times. If I remember rightly there’s a campground in the high country there called Sheep’s Saddle. Great place to camp if you plan to make a loop and ride the road twice. You’re right, rough road surface but fantastic twisties. I remember a cool sign that said there were mountain curves for the next 30 miles. Now that’s rider heaven.

That was my fav ride when living in AZ from 97-03. Took many trips up there from Gilbert on multiple bikes (BMW R1100GS, Honda VFR800, Honda CBR929RR) and with multiple friends staying at Alpine most of the time. The food in Alpine was always a bummer though lol...

I still live in Phx, and I have ridden and camped off 191. Great views for sure. One February I was in my car heading west from Socorro N.M., a snow storm hit and I could not see the lines in the road. Finally stopped in Pie town to sleep in my car. Man it was cold! At sunup the snow had stopped thank God.

Did you stay in one of the campgrounds or did you go full dispersed? There’s so much room to camp up there! ...bears and mountain lions definitely crossed my mind more than once though 😅🤣 yeah...I can’t imagine attempting that road in the later winter/early spring with the snowfall. I’m sure they see quite a bit of snow up there!

I loved this ride many years ago (not so many tar-snakes??) and arrived at the Morenci mine after dark and in a thick fog (low cloud). Dipping into a series of sharp downhill turns in a cloud in the dark was more than my previous experience had prepared me for. Going NOBO in daylight looks way more promising.
