----------------------------------------
Aries Spears praised Black Thought for his recent 10-minute freestyle, which led to a comparison about the new crop of rappers today. The famed comedian explained that he's not mad at the new rappers for being young, he's mad at them for being "lazy," adding that they should cut out the "Dr. Seuss" raps and step it up.
During the conversation, Aries also spoke about rap being a franchise and hoping that the new rappers don't mess things up, which you can hear more about in the above clip.

Love Black Thought and yes he is the real essence of a real MC! The only issue is that he does not have a high solo catalogue. But far as skills, he is just as good as Rakim and the others on the greatest list.

What a bunch of shit that anyone wouldn't put BT on a list because he is in a *group* Let's unpack this, the majority of the vocals, vocal arrangements/hooks/melodies & lyrics were written & done by Tariq. He's one of hip hop's not only greatest Mc but greatest SONGWRITERS of hip hop. We are talking close to 30 years in hip hop. from Organix to And then you Shoot your Cousin. Mark my words, Roots will go in Rock Roll Hall of Fame just like Run Dmc did. That's how important they are as icons to Hip Hop. Christ, they are on NBC five nights a week at 11:30. Who else in Hip Hop can transition to that? No one else would have the skill set to do that. Who cares if he doesn't have a solo album. Jimmy Page only had one fucking solo album but he's still one of the greatest guitarists ever in rock n roll. FOH with this "but he was in a group"

DJBVA08 Aries cut off Vlad about "there's always been wack party music in rap". Facts. But "But it's never been the dominant". That was an escape because rap is about lyricism and talking about yours or our struggle in a lyrical manner. Now that's in the back burner because of corporate greed. I don't blame the "rappers" who are capitalizing off it, just the people in the position of power who are pushing it. If Nas can give us the Hip Hop bible before "that buck that bought a bottle...", Pac gave us "Brenda's got a baby" at 20 and they had a lot less resources back then as far as research material, why we keep giving these kids a pass talking about they are only 19, or 20 or 21...what about Joey Bad@$$?

I 100% agree with Lord Jamal. Black Thought is a true Master of Ceremonies. In every sense of the word. The Roots didn't need gadgets. They did it live. And they didn't need features. They had him. Now this guy is freestyling on National TV every weeknight while taking time out to slay radio stations. All those people DJ Vlad named are songwriters, poets, and composers. Black Thought is a emcee. He stands alone in his field. Number 1 in it. There is no one in hip hop emceeing (not just making songs, not just touring, but Moving the Crowd weekly) emceeing quite the way, or on the level that Black Thought is doing it. And to tell you the truth, I don't think no one can.

He said " My passport pages are like War and Peace". Decipher that: First you need to know what War and Peace is. War and Peace is one of the greatest and largest novels ever written. It was written by Leo Tolstoy. Why would your passport pages need to be as many as one of the largest novels every written? Because you travel a lot. How would a rapper come to know about that book? Not unless he's an intellectual who reads, he said in one of the lyrics during the free style " he's a recording artist/ psychology professor. Anyone who can drop a ten minute long freestyle of nothing but solid thought provoking vocabulary is a real MC in my book. Forget the Gucci Gang crap it ain't mentally stimulating anyone.

When it comes to Black Thought and lyrics i believe he's Nas immutable. His lyrics challenge me intellectually to get some vocabulary into my brain. He makes me wonder what books he reads and why. That level of lyricism does not come from just hanging out in the hood and observing stuff. That's some "Brother Polight" level of brain stimulation. That to deserves more respect than amount of money in any rapper's bank account.

Aries thinks these new dudes are lazy but it has nothing to do with laziness. They simply don't have the mental capacity to write real lyrics. • @jrbling25

Talent and a gift are a part of that, but discipline is definitely there too - Royce has mentioned before why writing eading matters. You can see it and hear it in the metaphors and literary allusions of these 'gifted' emcees, you dont just know those things, you dont just pull good metaphors out of nowhere, there is definitely study and practice at least for the likes of black thought and others. So yeah blaming it on talent is lazy imo, examine what you're good at push that, no excuse for anyone rapper or not.

Low Pulse it’s one of the negative outcomes the internet/social media put out when it was created, look at Soulja boy or ASAP Rockys interviews about the internet and social media, even though it gave people platforms of their own to reach out to people all over and gain attention of labels looking for talent it also brought in people that weren’t fully into the craft of rap and hip hop just embracing their own work and what they liked, it just managed to gain popularity within the world and just created different sounds, styles(including lifestyles), and much more relatable things for many people. Lil peep was an example of anxiety, depression, heavy consumption of drugs, etc. Just key issues that have been rising nowadays within the US specifically the youth having a connection to this artist and understanding what he feels, relating to him.

Vlad, give Black Thought his due. The lyrical display he put on in that freestyle is one of the greatest. He didn't repeat any thought processes on that joint. He worked several different flows that are actually old school flows. His metaphor game was ridiculous. His breath control was amazing. You're not being fair. So what he's been with the Roots. He is no different than 2 Pac & the Outlaws, Biggie & Junior Mafia, Juice Crew. He's been the primary rapper for the Roots since the 90s. I don't think you really understand what hip hop really was. Btw, It takes Two wasn't the worst. The worst was JJ Fad. Maybe you didn't realize but Rob Base had already been rapping for a few years before It takes Two came out. He put out a party joint to get on. If you saw who he rolled with it should give you an idea of what lyricism he was capable of.

Jazz is a art form of instrumental talent and intellectual talent yet you forgot the miseducation of a culture and its people is the reason lyricism isn't needed to create a good song. Rap is a spawn of rhythm and blues and poetry is about lyricism. Rap is a hypocritical art form with no originality, ijs

Antonio Singleton and I by quoting Aries Spears: “But to a certain level...rap has always been about word play, metaphors, complexity...” I see your point tho.

I never comment on your videos but I do enjoy watching them. I would just put it in this perspective. If Rakim, Nas, Common, Black Thought, Notorious B.I.G., Big Daddy Kane, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z, Mos Def, Tupac, Hammer, Eminem and Vanilla Ice are your team and they win a championship. Hammer and Vanilla Ice still get rings. Hip Hop/Rap means different things to different people. I grew up listening to Kurtis Blow and Run DMC. As I got older I started listening to A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, The Roots, Nas and Common. With this generation I like Kendrick Lamar and Wale. I guess I’m a lyrical purists. A nice beat and record sales are all good and to some that’s important. I just recognize that to appreciate the greatness of Rakim you need the counter balance of a Trinidad James.
