I think the microphone is the most crucial part of any chain.. in my experience make the biggest impact on the sound of vocals than any pre or compressor...I cant live without my Tube SE Gemini tracking thru the 1073 uad into Cl1b uad.

MY CHAIN: • Telefunken TF29 • dbx 286s • Black Lion b172a • Arturia Audiofuse Studio The piece I couldn't imagine rocking without is, my dbx preamp. Ironically it's the cheapest piece of the chain, but I needed that specific feature set to compliment this chain. I can think of other usable alternative to every other piece....but that one has to stay put, for sure!

the 286s is a great preamp, the only thing annoying me is the quiet computer noises you hear in the background, but the compression and the unit it self is great on room mics. I left a room mice goign through this recording by accident when tracking drums and it sounded so great

I’m an artist NGL this production stuff is hard but I definitely love learning about it.

The most significant part of my vocal chain is all the stock Logic plugins

My Apollo x8p is the top piece but my black lion audio bluey compressor is right there with it! Got a warm audio wa-8000g mic running into a black lion audio b12a preamp into a black lion audio bluey into my Apollo

I have a bit of a newbie question. Sometimes I’m a bit confused what „the sound of a compressor“ means and when it occurs. I don’t have a lot of experience with different compressors and their sounds. Until now, I thought the more a compressor is engaged, the more you hear its sound. But here as you’re explaining, they take the sound from one compressor and making another one do the work/engaging. So does it mean, that you’re getting „the sound of the compressor“ just by running the signal through it, even without it engaging? Sorry, maybe that’s a stupid question…

My last vocal Chain, FLEA 47 into BAE 1073 MPF into BLUE Stam audio 1176 into NEVE 551 into Logic Then use the Tegeler Audio Schwerkraftmachine Vari-Mu. And use some UAD Fairchild in sidechain to use its colour. ;-)

Golden Age 251 MK2, into a Warm Audio 1073 or UAD La610 MK2, into a Black Lion Audio Bluey, into a Warm Audio La2a, into a UAD Apollo. It works fine

So a lot of these engineers use the compression not just to compress but for the tone, that makes sense

Travis Scott uses a Sony C800G into a 1073 into a CL1B. Basic Sony chain. Tory uses a u67. Not sure the pre or comp.

Why I don't hear you mention about the EQ in all of these famous artiists' vocal chain?

hey if im running a tlm 102/103 into a twin x duo, do I need a pre amp too? setting up my first home studio but want future proof myself by buying once crying once

The Twin X has built in preamps and unison preamp technology. You are pretty good. Both my TLM103 and TLM102 perform with just my twin X. I hope this helps.

Sorry man, but my vocal chain is custom. Yes sir everything all the way to the interface. Been building stuff for a couple decades, my mics are priceless as are the other pieces. I even broke out my welding machine and built a real EMT 140 style reverb and NO plugin comes close to the density I'm hearing, lol.
