Arguably, the last great Scarlet/Fire--Grateful Dead Seattle 5/26/95

Музыка

This may be the best listening experience available of this particular Scarlet/Fire. See the bottom of the description for details why.
Personally, I love this one, but you can judge for yourself.
My editing notes:
I mended (crossfaded) the sound board recording in two places where it was cut, so there are a couple bars missing at two points of the recording, both occurring during the transition between Scarlet and Fire. I made sure that the timing is seamless and that the edits are unnoticeable, unless you compare them side by side to a complete recording without any time missing. Hopefully, one day a complete recording will emerge on Archive.org or somewhere else. But until then, enjoy this.

I can't listen to Jerry playing without the tears rollin out. With the first cord strummed it was like electric pulsating thru your veins. It was Jerry it was Brent it was the band it was the scene, the people (my fam) the spirit the LOVE! Nothing else will ever compare to that feeling of unity and surreal euphoria~ that moment when everything was just right in the world. Haven't had that feeling since. Don't think I ever will again.

My last show too. Will never forget that Scarlet/Fire. The whole stadium was spinning like a giant space ship taking off. I had been to 50+ shows by then and had never felt anything like that before, it was electric and it seemed like everyone knew something amazing was happening. So much joy and sweet sad nostalgia thinking about it. Thanks.

My one and only- I was 17. So thankful that I was there... I've seen just about all the great music that a person of my generation could, from Nirvana, Petty, Dylan, PJ, Dieselboy, The Roots, Clapton, Cash, Tool, an eclectic mix- like from Van Morrison to Pavarotti and Midori, Pearlman, Dylan, Bb King, Sublime (!!), Trifinov, etc, and many more... but- This was... this was the Grateful Dead. I still have that ticket stub somewhere (I hope...). One of the best days of my life. (And that's saying something, thankfully.) Love to all

Me was there ! Superb... and my last Dead show. First was Paramount (2 shows) in '77. Saw some freak outside smokin a joint... pointed to a cool looking round apt. building across street... "That looks kinda cool". Guy said, "Yeah, that's certainly different." We spoke more, and he went through backstage door. "See you soon !" I thought that was odd. It was Jerry. I had no idea ! I had never seen pics of them. I was new. ;-)

+Jacob Skalka I couldn't agree with you more. I was lucky enough to have been at the last show in Soldier Field as an 8 yr old kid (don't know what my parents were thinking), but I'm glad they had that lapse in judgement. It's one of my earlier and fondest memories to date. I still love and can remember to this day that smell of the thick ganja-laden air weighing so heavy all around. We were 5-6 rows back and when night fell and the lights went up I could barely see the band. Not sure if it was from the contact high, or the thick smoke lol. Either way I can honestly say I was able to see Jerry Garcia play live before he died. I'll always very much appreciate that gift. Then there's videos like these that just carry the legacy on..magnificent stuff! Peace & Love my fellow DeadHeads :D

Like you say-great weather! I flew to Spokane for the week of, and I brought the California weather came with me, so I was told. A week of fishing, 4x4ing, swimming, just hanging out with a brother, his Mrs., and a friend/sister...and the great Grateful Dead in Seattle topped off the week. And after the show, we all went to the amusement park next to the venue. This was one of the greatest times I ever had seeing the Dead, quite honestly. What a time!

This was my beautiful adventurous life throughout my entire college career. Travelled all over the US. How I graduated I have no idea. Guess it was by the magic we know as Jerry. I wasn't here, never got to see Jerry. About a month after Jerry died I decided to see what the hype was about this band, I was 15. Went to the store and picked up Shakedown street cassette. That night my friend and I decided to take some acid for the first time and just walk around our neighborhood all night.. We had this small little boom box. We stumbled upon Fire on the Mountain. We both just fell in love with this song. We kept rewinding and playing this all night long just around the night. I've seen countless shows of the other ones, Ratdog, Phil and friends, Dead & comp. Seen them play Scarlet/fire many times. Hearing this song is just something so special it will take me back to that night everytime. Just a masterpiece of a song and a band!

We were with my two older brothers and we had a group of 20 + dead head all their friends who were on the bus and had finally returned home to seatown. Was a breezy sunny spring twighlight sunset 🌅 with space needle soaring. friends all sitting up on the wall up front. I grew up playing football on that field , but oh wow was this is different experience. Has lasted with me every day since 30 yrs later. Truly magical and life altering. Thank you 🙏 ❤ GD and Jerry.

What makes this jam great is that jerry was creating intentional melodies from the scale (b mixolydian) used to segue into fire on the mountain, and in fire itself. Jerry at his laziest would run up down the boxes of the scale, the occasional bend or slide, putting little thought into crafting melodies with those seven notes. Jerry at his best could take those seven notes of whichever scale/mode he was using and make little songs over and over again creating distinct musical phrases. His improvisation was inspired by the modal jazz of john Coltrane and miles and ornette Coleman. The idea was improvising with just one mode over limited chord changes. The hard part is keeping the jam engaging and interesting and fresh for 20, 30 minutes despite playing seven notes over the same chord. Jerry could be brilliant at that. He could also at times be lazy and just run up and down the scale. Here he really puts thought into each phrase creating unique little mini songs through the jam

One thing I'll add I saw a bunch os JGB shows at The Warfield in 95, and people would sigh when he forgot a classic verse or mixed a few; noticeable gasps and sighs throughout the crowd. Technically sure those shows and many shows in 95 and yes after Brent passed, well easy to be critical. Still at those Warfield 95 shows, it got to the point of feeling it was as if a bunch of people at the country club saw a naked freak streaking across the 9th green at the US open. It was very mean to Jerry, and pissed me off, whatever not about people's opinions on what was good or bad, just seeing this guy up there doing his best, and these IMHO not very nice folks being outwardly mean. Reminded me of 92' some "Celtic fans"dissing Bird, freakin ridiculous. Plus the shining star, johnny too bad-shining star alone was worth all those flubs. Love you Jerry and thanks

I feel what you're saying about some heads being harshly critical. Just to temper your observation slightly I'd say some of those gasps were of legitimate concern. But, yeah on the other hand, some people just don't understand the effort it takes to get up and play for people night after night. Damn, I miss Jerry.

most were arguably legit, but but guess my point is to be so public about it....sure concern is one thing, but groaning like he missed another wild three pointer, lots of people in this world mask being a jerk w/ concern. now before i get too deep where no need to go there, sorry,, not saying anyone posted did, just was thinking out loud, and certainly apologize if anyone feels in disagreement. LPAC I know U understand so obviously not dissing u. and yes two sides to most everything, even that which i may find 100%, admittedly someone else may have a reason etc.

Garret Schenck Doubt any of it hurt his feelings much. After thousands of shows, he was enough of a professional to deal with the occasional heckle, and I'm sure he didn't want anyone to feel sorry for him. In their early years, they endured some brutally negative crowd reactions. Comes with being a performer. Jerry really could project a sense of Byronic pathos, but that was part of his stage schtick and he was most definitely a romantic at heart. When it came to the mechanics of putting on a show , he was as tough as any dockloading foreman. All you have to do is listen to some of the tapes of their onstage private verbal exchanges to realize he meant business and was very no-nonsense. Jerry could definitely look after himself .

  • @ronson232

    @ronson232

This is not meant as a dis to Jerry, god rest his soul. But I think some of the disgruntlement during the '95 tour was justified. You say he was trying to do his best. The problem is, he really wasn't; at that stage of his decline, he simply was incapable of trying his best. There was a feeling among some that the band was touring and collecting money to feed their enormous machine, but not really having their hearts in it anymore. There was genuine concern for Jerry, who obviously was functioning at about 20% capacity. But there was also annoyance at the whole band and its handlers, for letting business take precedence over Jerry's health and the music itself. This would have even been excusable if it were *good* business, but this business had a fatal outcome and doomed itself. In retrospect, I don't think people blamed Jerry for his increasingly frequent flubs as they were with the band for letting things reach that point. Maybe the band itself didn't deserve the anger, maybe nobody did. But the anger was legit.

One of the shows was particularly memorable due to some Canadian geese who decided to check out the show with the rest of us. We had made our way up to the stage at the west end zone. We noticed Bobby, Jerry & Phil were looking up into the sky to the east and then turning to each other and smiling broadly. I turned around to the east to see a perfectly formed "V" of honkers flying dead center toward the middle of the stage. Seeing the huge smile on Jerry's face as he watched them fly over the stage and on their way was unforgettable. Everything seemed to click into place after that.

This is good or sure. IMO the last truly great scar-fire was 3/23/95. Lots of energy to that one and the whole band is really on. Hornsby on piano for that too. I say this, but of course every scar-fire has its merits. Thanks for this one

Great show!! Was there with the whole 206 crew...pockets full of the Northwest's' finest flowers, and lots of Yugoslavian 23. E wanted to leave before the show even started, ' cause the dose was throwing him. Told him to wait for the music to get going...he did & he was fine! Beautiful spring night in the Emerald City...started with 2 giant V's of geese flying down in between the stands @ Memorial Stadium...show went late, then spilled out into the already crackin' Folk Life Festival!! reggae shows in the Center House (where we met Jerry, wearing a Jerry Band shirt, lol!) and drum circles until 3am. Someone stole my shoes that night! Walked 4 miles home barefoot...ahhh, one of the best days of my life, leading into an absolutely epic summer! Jerry passed on my birthday, a couple months later...always sad I never got to see more of the Dead all together. At least we have the bootlegs! Thanks for the trip down memory-lane...

Went to Vermont first summer east coast show. Man lake Champlain was very still you could see clear threw to Canada. Jerry were red in Vermont. Strange..I made it all the way to Chicago n got a 50 ticket for last night that year. Man we rode into Chicago and there was not one soul at the venue because we rolled in the previous evening. We drove around the old stadium and then pulled up to the Museum next to the stadium where we found a Phish Kid that had just came into Chicago from Phish he had mentioned.

The last and most meaningful show I ever saw. Hard to explain how this show leaves more of an impression on me than 50 other shows I saw. Maybe its because I had written them off, then the boys bring the x-factor when it was least expected. I remember being in total awe during the fire- close encounters shit. Looking around, like what the fuck is going on! The stella pushed it over the top. I would love to some day have a crispy SBD of this show. Why it doesn't exist, I dont know because the acoustics where great.

I was at this show and I was stone-cold sober. I agree that this is possibly the last "great" Scarlet->Fire played, although it was only played a handful of times after this before Jerry passed that August. On a side note, the Shakedown Street performed in Portland a day or so before this show is arguably the last barn-burning Shakedown played. I mean, it smoked.
