Argentina debt: Does IMF offer a path to financial stability? | Counting the Cost
Argentina is Latin America’s third-largest economy, but during the past 70 years, it has endured one financial crisis after another.
One of the main problems is it has borrowed too much money to cover its own public spending. That has included loans from the International Monetary Fund, which most of the time it has not been able to pay back. But again, it is now looking to tango with the IMF to avoid defaulting on its debt.
Elsewhere, we look at the financial institutions accused of fuelling the climate crisis.

Just to be clear, the latest (and greatest loan of our history) was technically illegal. Not only did it go against certain IMF rules but also Argentina's basic legislation. It was a purely political move to finance Trump's favourite candidate here. So it is not just an economic issue. It is a political one, and therefore should not be treated from a purely economic point of view.

When the "expert" says it will be painful, she means it will be painful for the poor. Isn't there any other alternative apart from austerity? How about increasing taxes for the rich?
@Maurazio

Unfortunately if you tax the rich you solve the problem for a month or maybe a year, then you are back where you started. And the capital will fly away. you need to solve the structural problems. compared to the annual spending of a country the wealth of the rich people is never enough, a broad tax base is needed.

@@Maurazio it's not like that .when you increase the tax on rich which in some level reduce the income inequality and the state will have more fund they can use it for the well fare and employment of the people.its not that simple there are a lot of other things that are also taken into account.
@a210926

@@arshaq4200tend to disagree, because of our history, but I understand your point. A lot of countries tried to tax rich people usually don't go so well... Of course, you need to discuss each tax, but I never see any that works. For example, Europe tried that wealth tax sometimes..in 1990, twelve countries in Europe had a wealth tax. Today, there are only three: Norway, Spain, and Switzerland. The most recent: France's wealth tax contributed to the exodus of an estimated 42,000 millionaires between 2000 and 2012, among other problems. Only last year, French President Emmanuel Macron killed it. I am not saying that you should not rise taxes I rich people, but you need to think in the secondary consequences.
This debt and default has been excellent for some Argentinians in the backstage and in the banks!

Recently people talked a lot about the Chinese debt trap building infrastructures for developing countries. How come no one call this debt trap that Argentina could not pay back for the last 40 years? The money that did not go to developing the infrastructures?
@noirto2

because china is open to renegotiating the term of the loan to make sure country actually can repay it, where IMF refuses to even discuss any changes except additional loan if the country encounter any complications.

@@noirto2 To the contrary, some of Argentina's past loans have been forgiven. But then Peronist governments continue to spend money they don't have and eventually borrow more.

We hope in near future there is a better alternative to replace IMF in provide loans without interest to countries in needs. This is the time where many nations are having difficulty to recover from Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis expecting from Russian-Ukraine conflict; The World has to rethink of the better financial arrangement and institutions that are not exploiting. IMF and World banks are not the right institutions to help nations to recover from economy stagnations and decline. This is the time to revamp economic and financial order of the world.

Never loan money to a country that doesn't implement economic reforms but instead keeps following failed policies.
The real fix for Argentina would be to implement strong sustainability programmes to look after the forests,wetlands,waterways,people, animals etc via eco-housing,enhancing biodiversity,clean green industry,animal welfare,organic farming etc etc.This would be a win win situation for everybody.

lol do you seriously think sustainability is going to solve this? How much is this sustainability going to inject into the micro and macro economies? While this may have an impact on local communities, it isn't going to affect wider economic problems. your suggestion is only a very small part of the possible solution

Why does it say FMI on thimb and IMF on vid?
the IMF said it will only help Argentina if it adopts an anti-crytpo stance.... hmmm why would the IMF want that 🤔🤔🤔????

If you know anything about the IMF you know it doesn't represent financial stability if you're a developing country, but it does mean the continuation of Neo-liberal resource extraction at the cost of its people

neoliberal? wtf, the country ask for loans they cant repay and finance the budget by printing loads of money (50% of annual inflation) because they have a huge and inneficient state that it also regulates everything, from commerce, to exchange rates, high taxes, etc. Its the same old third position argentina implement since 1930s, nothing liberal on it.
@Wilson-xd4zq

Oh? Is that why other countries which have borrowed from the IMF did become financially stable? And what "neoliberal resource extraction" is happening in Argentina? It has a lot of copper but doesn't even mine it. Argentina is in the situation because its Peronist governments keep spending more than they can afford. It isn't so-called neoliberalism that destroyed Argentina's economy, Peron and Peronists did.
Does the IMF have any success stories
If 2022 won’t get any worse then your wrong
Great insights by Jimena Blanco. Argentina and IMF, seems unbreakable love and hate relation, if not addiction. Proverbial “God or rather Government help those who help themselves” might apply here… And seems like perpetual affair, where parasite IMF will never leave its host, and austerity is its wining card. Is it structural or political? I would say both. Cui bono? and I would leave it to people to decide and strike first.
IMF needs an more integrate solution , three fold solution Globally that allows, CPI, Agricultural economics innovation to stabilize growth
I guess most people don't get what happens here. Argentina's economy is in the hands mostly of multinational corporations... For starters: what is the currency those corporations use to repatriate their revenues? Yep... That is the reason why the goverment "borrows" from the IMF... To ensure corporations have the dollars to send their earnings to their respective countries... And who pays the bill? The argentinian people. How do they pay it? By emptying their stomachs, by not getting medical care, by not accessing the education system. Colonialism 101 althou nobody wants to call it by its true name. On top of that, the argentinian people have to pay interest for buying goods made by corporations of foreing origin in their own country.
@a210926

So what is your point? Do think removing multinational companies will help Argentina? The problem is cristal clear fiscal deficit is too high for Latin America country. Just pure irresponsibility.

This isn't colonialism, this is spending more than you have. Blame Peronists. Argentina can't even borrow in private markets because it has burned so many lenders. It's amazing anyone is willing to loan it money, including the IMF.

Bitcoin is horrible currency for the poor. It has too high transaction costs to be used as real money. Argentina should just do economic default (stop paying anyone anymore for now), take high hit that causes, and then bring new national currency that corresponds to real economy and will eventually have foreign trust.
