Rod Argent was the keyboard guy in the mid 60s for the British Invasion Band "The Zombies." "Time of The Season," and "She's Not There," "Tell Her No," and many more. The Zombies were a really great Band in the 60s. Argent, really only had this one big hit song.

Russ Ballard, the lead singer wrote songs for tons of artists like Since You've Been Gone (Rainbow, Head East, Brian May), God Gave Rock and Roll To You (Argent, Petra and Kiss), I Know There's Something Going On (Frida, mega hit with Phil Collins on Phil Collins' style drums), Liar (Argent, Three Dog Night, Blackfoot), Nowhere To Run (Santana), You Can Do Magic (America) just to name to most famous versions, but he wrote tons of songs that were recorded by tons of artists.

I'm not sure if every generation feels this way, but I know you can make a guess based on my age about the plethora of musical greatness experiences I've been around to witness in one way or another (many concerts seen as well) over the decades, encompassing genres that didn't exist and I'd never imagined when I was young, so I feel extremely blessed. That's a Hammond C3 organ with what sounds like a Leslie cabinet. In those days this song Freed me from the herd mentality. My generation just kept it real no political correctness. And you could affect hold your head up and be proud that you are an individual. So let's not forget that it's a simple message and the chorus is the message. This is obviously musical mastery anyway you look at it. Notice how he takes you through all the modes of this key they're in

Nice catch, JGS. Russ Ballard of Argent has been a prolific songwriter. Beyond "God Gave Rock and Roll To You," he also was responsible for: "New York Groove" (Ace Frehley of KISS), "You Can Do Magic" (America), "Since You Been Gone" (Rainbow), "Liar" (Three Dog Night), and "Winning" (Santana). Those are perhaps the most well known songs but Ballard's Wikipedia page has what seems to be a quite comprehensive list. Once again, great catch on the KISS song.

@@jgsrhythm100Thanks for the reply, JGS. I noticed Steppenwolf did a cover of "Hold Your Head Up" about the time tht you mentioned. What's interesting to me is the different genres that each of the songs that I included reflect. There's rock in there, for sure, but "You Can Do Magic" is a radio friendly pop hit from America that I certainly didn't associate with any connection to Argent. I also noticed Ballard did a lot of producing after Argent, such as with America, and had some success there as well. Thanks again for the reply.

I always hated that song but then again there were only two songs I ever liked by America and they were "Sister Golden Hair" and "Ventura Highway." While the meaning of the word "argent", (besides being Rod's last name), is "silver", this song has long been considered classic rock gold. I've always felt, though, that the chorus, etc, exists mainly to have something to wrap around the main event--that mighty, trippy organ solo. (Nice pre-video countdown graphics, btw.)
