    Not many female artist or any artist for that matter have three distinct vocal primes. 1. Bright and clear as a bell era 2. Husky cigarette era 3. A mix of the first two with even better interpretation skills later life era Aretha Franklin was truly one of a kind! May she she continue to Rest In Peace.

    I just love that she was just so ok with her changing voice and able to adapt like that. At least outwardly (she was always having fun) but I think deep down every singer must feel scared when their voice changes with age.

  • @faznout

    @faznout

    @@SeanNessman - Aretha's voice didn't necessarily change with age. She was a very heavy chain smoker and finally stopped smoking in January of 1993. Then her voice started to clear up again in 1995. But yes it is an known fact that with age the singing voice does change for a lot of singers even if they never smoked like Patti Labelle. In today's time Patti seems to be really struggle to sing an entire verse without having to break it down into pieces with a lot of stops in between each word. And she really has to push hard now to get out the few high notes she's got left.

    @@serpentinecreature - So true! No matter what time period of footage I watch of her, or any of her music I listen to since she passed, for me it doesn't feel like she's actually gone. I don't mean that in a denial type of way but because I've been such a huge obsessed fan of hers my whole life I know that it's her spirit that sits with me. In the same way as close loved ones who have passed on.

    Some of those cancellations were not her fault she demanded cash payment upfront in American tender no checks no promissory notes. If they didn't have the money for her she packed that bus up and left. A lot of the old black American singers have been abused and taken advantage of by promoters in the past and she wasn't going to stand for it any longer@@darkfeather6857

    These young performers today need to watch this to understand how a true performer graces the stage Notice, she is actually singing, she does not have a whole posse behind her, and she is eloquently dressed. Notice the change of Clothes when she got into her gospel set. And here she is with Clarence Clemmons of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band turning it out. There will never ever be anyone who can touch Aretha. Outstanding performance, but what do you expect from a Queen. One of the things I have always liked about her, she always had excellent background singers. In the early days it was her sisters Carolyn and Erma and of course Cissy Houston.

    Thanks missharid for this marvelous post. The Queen was in her element this night, her 30th year in the industry. I am a 50 year fan who is grateful for the opportunity to have experienced Royalty. Long live the Queen!

    Such a beautiful concert. You can actually hear the singer. No one standing up to block your view. Paying respect to the artist and her outstanding voice. These new American concerts are really to much.
