This had nothing to do with respect it had everything to do with Mariah Carey not able to hang with Aretha Franklin vocally at this point of her career lol.

After watching a few of Aretha’s duets with other artists, this is by far my favourite . Mariah was very respectful but still held her own. She hit F5’s just like Aretha. They both had a good ear for each other. Can we stop with the comparisons and just appreciate this? It’s a DUET and they sounded AMAZING together.

1:14 Mariah executes that 'Ooooh" riff down just like Aretha does on the original recording of this song. This shows how much of an influence Aretha is on Mariah. Mariah has said that Aretha has sang every note and riff known to man. When Aretha first came out, nobody was singing with those type of embellishments. That's why Mariah says Every singer is influenced by Aretha even if they don't know it.

This was the infamous 98 Divas special, where Ms Aretha tried to steal Celines part, and Celine hit those highs and you couldn't even hear Aretha. Then you hear Mariah trying so hard, but at that point she knew her place and she stepped back and let Celine and Aretha battle it out. Mariah fans are delusional as fuck. This is a very underrated performance. I love the energy and chemistry between Mariah and Aretha!!

At 2:33 is one of my best duet vocals of all time. The slickness and agility in Mariah riff and her tone matched with Aretha's big rapsy gospel belt it amazing!🙏

It's funny that people say Mariah tried outshining Aretha when it is so OBVIOUSLY EVIDENT SHE DIDN'T. She stood a bit further upstage, looked frequently at Aretha with admiration and acknowledgment, had fun and performed with her with no other agenda. She was invited to sing, and she did her best. Well, she has to and she can. And about Mariah 'contorting' her body to hit the notes, she always does that because her body is emulating the emotions of the song and moving in accordance to her voice

Off her peak aretha was still too good that night. Bright, inspiring, soulful belts just lighted up the whole song. Btw, Mariah also did a really good job of harmonizing with aretha and keeping to the rythm by belting out stably at the top of her range while still able to embellish the song with creative runs, adlibs, improvs,..., which proves that she is a really versatile and original singer.

You're wrong, this wasn't peak Mariah, peak Mariah was 90-96 (where she outsang none other than Patti Labelle onstage), this Divas performance was in 98, it was right when her voice was having a harder time, her nodules and personal struggles (divorce and stress) were not helping her at all.

I love Aretha's tone and power here, and her mixing is less head-heavy than other performances. RIP legend. We should treasure the remaining true legends like Mariah and build them up

I love the respect MC gives AF but also how AF would encourage MC to go back and forth with her.

I don't care what ya'll say she held back out of respect this is one of mariah's whistle active years she could steal the spotlight anytime.

And her voice was in great condition here. Some people are just mad and just say her voice was shot this night as an excuse. Her voice was shot that.... pfffftt yeah right that’s a huge lie, that night she hit and held a lot of F5s/F#5s they night. Proof that she DID hold back BUT showed off great amount of singing in the end.

Lies and lies, this was in 98, her voice was already shaky compared to 90-96, she has some notes here that are strained, but she really shows it in the Natural Woman performance, Aretha called her several times and she ignored it because her voice got hoarse at that time and she had to rest.

Mariah was like 0:38 oh i thought, but ok patiently waited till Aretha gave her signal to sing 1:00 and 1:53 after an amazing runs and riffs at 2:32 she doesn't want Aretha to feel she's being upstaged and had to remind her that we know who's the queen. then Aretha goes on and sent a message like it's ok darling you're doing great. then they finished the song with Aretha hugging Mariah as an appreciation of her politeness. Aretha was sincerely happy for their performance and what Mariah showed to her. Over the performance Mariah is one step behind showing respect to the Queen of Soul herself. This act of professionalism is very rare on today's artist . 😔

2:51 is the best riff of the night for me.. MARIAH CAREY ! tone of voicenis out of this world

What a great duet. The great Mariah singing with her idol the queen of soul Aretha. For all those saying Mariah couldn’t keep up... Mariah duetted with Aretha. That means singing together and blending not trying to upstage and outsing! She knows the meaning of a duet. Mariah could have sang and riffed much more if she wanted to but she showed respect to the queen on her song and sang to compliment Aretha. That’s class. Unfortunately Mariah always attracts haters who try to undermine her ability and I guess that’s a sign of nasty, jealous haters who know but can’t admit the level of her talent. RIP the great Aretha who led the way for all who followed ❤️

Um she was a legend even before now Mariah put out hit after hit none stop no other solo female artist ever did that accept for Whitney Houston but Mariah truthfully passed Whitney when it comes to album sells because Mariah can change her voice and adapt to different sounds. And Whitney she was freaking amazing a power house but her voice couldn’t change. She was a pop diva and soulful churchy like singer. R.I.P. Whitney

So nobody is going to talk about the belt Mariah did at 2:51 or was that just me...I know she held the mic away but you could still hear it faintly..She probably didn’t think it would sound good, and also might have been holding back..but that was definitely a high belt for Mariah, and then they didn’t even rehearse, which probably added the pressure of that note not coming out....So for all people who are saying she couldn’t reach high notes, she definitely reached it

And THESE PEOPLE have the AUDACITY to claim that Mariah’s voice was SHOT that night. Anybody with ACTUAL EARS who ACTUALLY WATCHED Mariah’s performances that night will know that she blew.

To all the ppl saying Mariah didnt had the voice to answer Arethas call, listen here, that "Chain chain chain" she did after "Im gonna take all I can take" in the climax, proves she had it and she could, she decided not to cause respect her too damn much!

It's funny how people twist Mariah's respect for Aretha and correlate it with setbacks such as her vocal decline or the inability to outsing someone else. It's clear that without alternatives, Mariah would improvise and sing as hard as she humanly could. But she idolizes Aretha, hard. It was never about her outsinging her role model and taking the spotlight. She doesn't even try to overpower those she sings with in a concert! Even if her voice had been in its prime, she would still have stood at the back and waited for Aretha's permission because that's the person she is.

Nope, if it was respect she would have shown the same "imma take the backseat" attitude with Patti a few years back. I'm a Mariah stan and i recognize this, she was already on vocal decline during this performance, she wasn't during the legendary Patti performance. 90-96 she could do everything she could with her voice, 97 and 98 were very stressful years, she was obviously tired and struggled more vocally than before. Even other fans are wandering what this performance would be if it happened in 96.

She went note by note with Patti because she could do everything she wanted, on this performance she was clearly saving her voice because she realized things weren't going as smoothly. On the last performance of this Divas show (Natural Woman and the gospel segment) she was clearly struggling, she even went a bit off key on her part, it was clear she had to rest her voice and that's what she did.

@@caiolucas8257 or may be these are two completely different dynamics? Mariah was a fan of Aretha, but not close to her at all, which was unlike her relationship with Patti. Your comparison is not even fair. Mariah had been under worse conditions than this performance and she still would do as much as she could, even if it sounded horrible. Given that's her character as a singer, why would she smear Celine's enthusiasm simply because her vocal decline was kicking in? The more probable explanation was that Mariah, who had a vocal problem, held back out of respect. Her respect was the cause of her dislike towards Celine's visceral participation, not her own dulled singing chops. I'm not vindicating what Mariah said about Celine was right, but merely was that it did not come from a place of insecurity.

@@caiolucas8257 this and the patty performance were in the same year/era.. mariah worships aretha and everyone in the music industry know that aretha don't like to share the spot light so she respected that . Patty in the other hand is the fun auntie that everyone loves and she's Mariah s godmother so she was so relaxed when they performed together and she didn't feel the need to hold back. But in general mariah was never the showing off type when she sings with others , she saves that for her shows when it s her moment to shine.

There was not even a second of Mariah trying to outstage Aretha. Mariah was being very nervous and sang her parts respectfully letting Aretha lead the whole song, this is very professional
