Once again in Area 88, a plane that was never equipped with a HUD (until way after this is set) is shown with a HUD. They did it with the Skyhawk, Phantom, and now Tiger II. I will just chalk this up to McCoy going through the painstaking process of tracking down like a hundred different HUDs, and hardwiring them into each plane.

I'm South Korean and F-5(KF-5) still in active duty. We replacing KF-5 with FA-50, but it will take some times ('til 2025). Yes, money issue.. so we did some enhancement works. Now our KF-5 can drop Smart Bombs (o_O);; We are so critic about using that so~~old fighter (we call it 'Elder Abuse), but also have some attachment. Because KF-5 defend our sky almost half century...

i live in switzerland and we also used this F-5 or F-20 Tiger. Now its out of Date and its so sad bcs its the sexyest Plane ever build. i wish they do the same Plane again with modern technique and maybe just a little bit smaller and lighter. Nice to hear that Koreans give them a longer Live.

After a final air duel with Kanzaki, he is victorious but due to injuries has lost every memory about Area 88, while all pilots except Kim (Harrier) died.

A WSO's job is like the typical co-pilot, to help the pilot fly the plane, they can both manuever the aircraft (although the WSO doesn't commonly fly the plane), control weapons, etc. I think the WSO is the person on F/A-18 Hornets who when the aircraft is attacking ground targets he's the one looking in the little screen to guide the anti-ground weapons.

i know it's probably a common thing but i love the red baron. Not cause he is the biggest name but just because of how much an amazing pilot he was.

As warhawk said this takes place in early 80s, no MIG-29 exported yet.. MIG-21 here had heat seeking missiles and the MIG-21 is still a formidable air-air platform , it has been upgraded with newer engines and avionics/sensors, its still an airframe fairly agile, MACH 2 capable and very cheap to get and maintain.. Actually i think Poland got ride of many MIG-29s and kept an upgrade fleet of MIG-21s

well according to manga plot, Kim is the only Area 88 veteran that survives the Arslan war, all the others are gone, except ofc Shin that however has lost all memoryies about its service as mercenary after the deadly final duel against kanzaki. Btw, Kitori exist only in the 2005 anime, she isn't present in the manga and in the awesome OVAs and movie from 80s

Well regarding video there are 2 OVAs, 1 movie (considered in short the third and final OVA)in 1985. This dogfight comes from the 2005 series TV And exist 2 videogames released in late 80s and of course the original manga, pubblished between 70s and 80s The interesting thing is that every version differs as final fate regarding Shin

this show is based in the 80's. I cant remember if the Mig-29 existed at that time or not but if it did chances are Russia wasnt selling it to anybody yet. Mig-21 was cheap, easy to maintain and wasnt that bad of a fighter so naturally at the time everyone wanted it.

well the red baron final air battle was brown was chasing the red baron and baron was pulling every trick to get rid of brown, baron was able to shake him at one point but there were enemy AA gunners shooting at him and one ended up firing a fatal shot, amazingly he was still able to land his plane safely

and the last battle of the red baron and arthur brown reminds me of cipher vs pixy battle, ace vs ace.

Is there someone who had read the manga? How's the end? Did Shin battled Kanzaki? If so, what plane Shin's plane using and what plane Kanzaki's using? how's the fight ends? did Shin's plane got destroyed?

both can but if i think they're in the situation where i pilot needs to focus on flying then the WSO will control the guns. Like in alot of those gulf war videos when they're flying and the WSO is guiding the bomb to it's target while the pilot flies the plane

ive played as an f5 in a game called ace combat before. i would almost refuse to use missiles because i loved using the twin cannons so much!

i can work with just about anything but in terms of preference. F-16, F-15, Su-37, Su-35, Rafale M, Eurofighter Typhoon, F-35, Mirage 2000, Mig-29, Mig-35, Mig 1.44, F-22, Su-47

It was a "better" ending than the OVA series. This modern series finally is not clear but suggest than they finally win and Shin lives.

not really for the stability i just like the way it looked in cockpit view with the cannons firing. other than the A-10 no gun was more fun to use

when I play Ace combat assault horizon multiplayer Su-35 is usually my plane of choice. I'll fly F-15, Su-37, Rafale M or Typhoon if i dont really wanna fly anything else. Oh i also really like Flying YF-23. Im a fighter pilot i outright refuse to attack anything on the ground unless it's a SAM site.

There's endless classic Trance tunes that fit right in with this sort of thing. 80s synth is good too, adds a little magic to it. Personally, I'm okay with female mercenary pilots. Mainly because we don't ever see many females in this anime accept for Ryoko. But there are numerous things in the 2005 series that didn't make sense. One of them being the character Kim. I mean he's a kid. Isn't he too young to be a mercenary pilot?

Why those arab doesn't buy MiG-29 instead of 2nd hand MiG-21 without heat seeker? BTW, I finally found Ace Combat in version of anime.

+Texplays Nope, it is definitely a Mirage. At 0:04 you can see it is a Mirage F-1, however at 0:15 the animators decide it should be a Mirage 5, because Dassault are well known for their patented Airplane morphing system.

Dummy was about to overshoot and be put right in the MiG's gunsight. 0:55 How on earth did that sidewinder maintain lock, the MiG was pushing at least 7G. 0:58 The trigger fires missiles, not guns. The aircraft technicians must be having a field day. 1:00 Who is he firing at? He just wasted all of his ammunition shooting air. Fucking Anime pilots...

For that last point about wasting ammo, the whole plot of Area 88 revolves around this dude named Shin who got tricked/forced into joining a mercenary group called Area 88 while by a friend who wanted to rise higher in their company and get his girl, Ryoko. To leave Area 88, a pilot has to serve their contract or earn a million dollars and pay for their freedom. In this, Shin just got his final kill so he's unloading cause he wanted to sever ties with the place and see his girl again.

After that last kill he had earned enought money to cancel his contract with the Ashlam air force.. so he expent all his ammo to finally fly a non-combat plane at last and leave behind the mercenary world. I think its clear as you see after the canon stops how pacefull the shot is of Shin flying relaxed in the clear skies

Dean Robinson Not in this one.. you might be mistaking this with the older 3 OVA version.. in the old version Shin had a F-5E .. losts it and then gets a F-20.. In this new version he never gets a F-20 ..he loses his F-5E and replaces it with another F-5E (probably the animators didnt want to expend money modeling a F-20). In this anime the F-5E is called clearly "Tiger 2" a couple of Times..
