I'll say it again, the anime is depicting an Extemely famous F-8 tactic used during Vietnam against Mig's of all types. By going verticle Shin plays to the advantages of the F-8 Crusader with its superior weight to thrust ratio. Unfortunately for Shin his parts dealer McCoy is rather shadey at times and has sold him a defective compressor.

Apparently he’s also using the spinning trick taught to him by Anakin Skywalker. The F-8 is supremely outclassed here. If it was the F-13s it would have made sense. But the actual fight happened against 17s and only a pair of guerrilla F-13s.

MauserK43 Two things - I use to fly F4s for the USAF in Vietnam. I had a friend who flew F8s and I’m pretty certain that MiG21’s had a better T/W ratio. The North Vietnamese rarely sent 21s up after us because they were so rare and expensive. The advantage we had was that we could load our airplanes up with G better than a 21 given our higher tolerance for wing loading. Plus a delta wing bleeds energy and lift quickly in a tight turn. 21s weren’t so bad if you keep them at a distance. The ones we hated were the MiG19s. That little jet was a hot rod.

Interesting thing to note: the aircraft Shin is flying, a Vought F-8J, could only carry Sidewinders on fuselage-mounted pylons. Here, they are mounted on wing-pylons (attached to the wet pylons). Also, these Sidewinders are AIM-9Ls, but the Crusader could only carry the B, C, and D sidewinders. Edit: upon looking at the flight manuals, the F-8E/J could also carry AIM-9Gs.

I think its a F-8E .. however its irrelevant as Area 88 aircraft are almost allways heavily customized and modified .. Mikey F-14 for example was moded for 1 pilot operation, Kim Harrier performed much better than a standard , and i guess Shin F-5E having a modern HUD instead of a gunsight was a mod too....

It depends on the thrust-to-weight ratio of your aircraft, and how hard your aircraft turns. If you have great T/W, then go for a vertical rolling scissors. If your aircraft turns good, then go for the vertical rolling scissors. ----- An F-8 could do the Cobra (Pugachev's) if it has thrust vectoring. :)

Indeed, as you said: 1) 1 vs. 8 in a realistic dogfight rarely works out for the underdog, 2) I forget the specifics bit I believe Shin was commenting earlier in that episode about his afterburner acting up also 3) the F-8 Crusader is a slightly antiquated fighter even during the time this takes place.

mikedawgx01 8 vs 1 (or 7 vs 1 as when the other 6 arrive Shin has allready shot down one of the fuirst 2 MIGs) might seems propostrous but in the time period this anime is set (early 80s with mainly 60-70s technology) it wasnt that much.. In the 70s an Israel pilot.. Giora Epstein found one day himself in his Mirage III alone against 11 MIG-21s ... but as he himself said in that period of time without radar guided or all-aspect IR heat-seekers (you had to be preciselly at the target's 6 so the Sidewinder/Atoll would get a lock) it didnt mattered how many enemy planes there were as hi said "it doesnt matter if they were 1 , 10 or 100... in your tail there is only room for one enemy" .. only one plane could attack him at a time (if 2 enemy jets try to get in one will obscure the other eventually).. and all of them will run out of fuel quicly due to combat engine demands (full power+afterburner) so in a few minutes they would all have to turn back to base or risk fuel starvation).. A really good coordinated enemy attack could take advantage of those numbers but in the combat heat and in that time without data-link and tactical displays it was really hard to coordinate in real time fighter jets in such tight space... even any radar controlers would see only a mashup of messed dots in his scope all changing position quickly Epstein survived his fight against 11 MIGs... he got 2 MIGs and then all had to break off for home due to fuel bingo

Japanese dialogue; Spanis subtitles. Joy. However, I do remember this moment from the old Area 88 comic book series, where Shin was shot down and he had to buy a new plane...just as he was getting close to paying off his "ransom fee" to get out of the Area 88 mercenary force.

In military practice, the F-8 Crusader is not equipped for the air forces of allied nations of the United States. It is limited to the US Naval Air Force, the French Air Force and the Philippine Air Force. Compared to the MiG-21, it was retired earlier. MiG-21 is still actively fighting in the Syrian battlefield at the present time. In later episodes of Area 88, Shin Kazama piloted the F-8 Freedom Fighter, which was a fighter similar to the MiG-21 when it was sold by the Americans to many countries.

+sparrowJLT *Somebody should suggest the Chance Vought F-8 for a module in Eagle Dynamics DCS World 2.5.* In the skies over 1960's indochina, although the Mikojan-Gurevich-17 shouldered most of the interception load for the Viet People's Air Force, the Mikojan-Gurevich-21 was being cycled in to better fight the two best United States combat jets of the era, the USN-USMC/Chance Vought F-8 (which packed four Colt Mk 12 Mod 2 cannon, Hughes AIM-9 Bravo IR AAMs and Hughes AIM-9 Charlie SARH AAM's) and the USN-USMC-USAF/McDonnell F-4 (which packed Raytheon AIM-7 SARH AAMs, Hughes AIM-9 Bravo IR AAMs, and even the occasional AN/SUU-23 gun pod in Air Force service). The F-8 Juliett would be a period-authentic bogey for the now-released MiG-21bis.

Se extraña mucho las tecnicas de animacion que se hacia antes no?
