Hi Rick, just wanted to drop some words of appreciation for your posts. I’m nearing 50 and starting my program this summer. So reassuring and refreshing to hear your perspectives based on your own experience. I’m surrounded by colleagues who put me down for even contemplating this path for one reason or another. But I’m determined. Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

Congratulations on getting started! It is disappointing to hear you have people discouraging you from doing this. Who are they to tell you what you should do with your career! I think being a more seasoned when you start this gives you a tremendous advantage and I also think patients will have more confidence in you just based upon age. Please keep informed as to your progress!

Great video. I’m 50 and am contemplating a career change. I’m going to start an ABN program next year and then go to an NP program. It is comforting seeing others have done it before me.

Thanks for the comment and for watching the video. Also, congrats on the career change. This is the same route I took to get to NP school, ASN to RN-to-BSN, and now MSN/NP. I took he ASN path because it allowed me to start working as an RN sooner, getting the clinical experience, while I worked on the next academic step. Please consider joining our community of students. While most are NP related, there are still great nuggets for RN students as well! Join Here >> bit.ly/PMHNPJourneyCommunity

Hello all, new subscriber here! I was struggling with the whole ageism thing and had a conversation with the president of the first nursing program I attended and was assured that there were a lot of people of older age who were in attendance. That was for RN. I was 44 in my first nursing program (Associates Degree), I finished my BSN two years ago, passed the NCLEX on my second attempt and turning 50 soon and I am RN and currently a FNP student! I also struggled with the fact that being older, do I have the mindset to retain the information and make it through NP school!?! I am more than half way done with my classes and will be starting clinicals in a couple of months. I just left a job that I loved making really good money and that coincided with working as an FNP, but the hours were too much! My grades were starting to suffer, So I left that job for a job that offered less hours and for wayyyy less money, and with no benefits (health coverage), but my grades have improved significantly and school is not forever!!! So, don’t let the ageism issue stop you! You can do it!!!! The devil is a liar!!!😇

Have heard that there are too many NPs in certain fields in certain areas, making it harder to land an NP job at all, and then those NP jobs paid less than hoped for as there was no scarcity of applicants to fill those jobs, so employers get away with paying less for NP positions also. So it could be very area dependent on need and salary, and if you can't be or don't want to be flexible and willing to relocate, possibly multiple times, in order to chase a job or a botter salary. Might be other options to consider first to improve your job happiness before years or hard study and tuition costs, especially if you are older already. Sad state of affairs that improving our knowlege levels could not be worthwhile, but out entire health care system is currently messed up. Just truly analyze all your options as this presenter advised, then make the decision you think best for you!

Im 49 and dropped out of college because my grades were so bad. I had a 0.67 GPA which is basically failing (nearly) every class I ever took, haven't had any schooling since then (25 years ago) and I have never had any form of job. I was also in special ed. I want to go to nursing school but I'm wondering if that is actually possible. I also no nothing about medicine.

Thank you for your comment and for watching the video. I commend you for considering nursing school. It is not easy and it takes a lot of dedication and effort to complete. First, whether you want to complete a 2 year or 4 year school, you will have to take all of your state required core classes, i.e… English, math, literature, etc… before you start into nursing school. I suggest you decide which school you want to attend and apply. If you are accepted, you can meet with a guidance counselor to help map out your classes and get access to resources that will help you. Keep me informed on what you decide to do!
